Silchar Medical College and Hospital, abbreviated as SMCH, is located in Silchar, Assam. It is a government medical institution established in 1968 by the Government of Assam. The college was founded to meet the growing need for medical education and tertiary healthcare in the Barak Valley and surrounding regions. Its purpose is to produce skilled medical professionals and deliver specialized healthcare services to the underserved population of southern Assam and neighboring states.
The college is situated at Ghungoor, Silchar, Assam, PIN 788014. The campus is spread over approximately 620 bighas of land in a serene suburban area, a few kilometers from Silchar city. It is accessible by road and offers a peaceful academic environment while maintaining connectivity with urban facilities. The spacious campus houses the academic buildings, hospital, residential quarters, hostels, and various departments.
SMCH is affiliated with Srimanta Sankaradeva University of Health Sciences and is recognized by the National Medical Commission. Its MBBS course has been recognized since 1976. Courses offered include MBBS at the undergraduate level, postgraduate degrees like MD and MS in various specializations, diploma programs, BSc Nursing, and paramedical diploma courses. Admission to MBBS is through NEET UG and for PG through NEET PG. Eligibility for MBBS is 10+2 with Physics, Chemistry, and Biology. PG requires an MBBS degree with a compulsory internship. Scholarships are generally available through national schemes, state government programs, and merit-based or need-based financial aid.
