History of the college
Sourashtra College is a Linguistic Minority Co-educational Institution affiliated to Madurai Kamaraj University. It was established in 1967 with donations from philanthropists of Sourashtra community. The College is located in Vilachery Main Road, Madurai. It is situated in 28.17 acres of land at the foothills of Pasumalai Hills near Tiruparankundram. The campus provides an excellent atmosphere conducive to the pursuit of higher learning.

The objective of the college is to impart higher education to the economically poor students, particularly the students belonging to the Sourashtra Community. During the year 2006 the College was accredited with B++ Grade by the NAAC. Autonomous status was awarded by the University Grants Commission from the academic year 2011-12. Further, the College was reaccredited with B Grade in January 2013.

It offers both Aided and Self-Finance Programmes, including two AICTE approved programmes viz. M.B.A. and M.C.A. It has 16 buses to facilitate girl students of our college. It provides uninterrupted power supply for the welfare of the students community. In addition, the college management provides hygienic purified drinking water for all students and staff.

The College has an Alumni Association which provides Free Noon Meals to poor students as one of its activities. The Alumni Association donates water tanks, Steel Almirahs regularly. Activities like career and vocational guidance, spoken English classes, aptitude test classes are also carried out by this Association at free of cost to the needy students. In 2012, SCAAN Building was established with the donations from Alumni Association in the college premises.

Since there was no higher education institutions for women in and around Pasumalai area,the Sourashtra College Council started a College for Women in 1998 for the benefit of girl students.

Admission Policy & Process

The students are the real beneficiaries of an educational institution. Accordingly, their
selection matters much.

Regular Courses

Admissions are made according to the Reservation policy of the Tamil Nadu Government:
Since the College is a Linguistic Minority Institution, 50% of the seats are reserved for
Sourashtra Linguistic Community Students and the remaining 50% of the seats are filled up as per the
Government of Tamil Nadu Education Admission Norms.

Most Backward Class/DNT (MBC) - 20%
Scheduled Caste (SC) - 18%
Scheduled Tribe (ST) - 1%

The Admission Committee comprises three senior faculty members of whom one is from MBC
Community. This Committee, formed every year, selects the candidates for admission to UG, PG &
Research Degree Courses.

Along with the regular selection list, a waiting list for an equal number of seats under each
quota (OC/BC/MBC/DNT/SC/ST) is prepared and put up on the Notice Board. The candidates placed
on the waiting list are asked to report 7 days after the date set for admission of candidates selected
in the regular list to take their chances. The regular selection or waiting list of the candidates for each
course under each category is in the descending order from the respective Rank List.

SCHOLARSHIPS

Scholarships of various categories are awarded by State and Central Governments on the basis of the income of the parents as well as the merit of applicants. Details can be had from the office. Notice: Any scholarships or fee remission may be cancelled by the College Council at any time for unsatisfactory conduct for the reason that the student does not maintain that standard of work which is expected.

A list of scholarship and Educational concessions to students are given for the benefit of the students. Details can be had from the College Office.
A register showing the awards in each year and an acquittance roll as prescribed for Government Scholarships shall be maintained by the Principal and shall be made available for scrutiny by. the Director of Collegiate Education or by the officers deputed by him, whenever required.
