About

Dr Velayuthan Nair (Chairman-Padanilam Welfare Trust & Sree Mookambika Institutions) was a young, successful and well-liked Professor in Manipal, and his wife the Director Dr. Rema V. Nair (Managing Director-Padanilam Welfare Trust & Sree Mookambika Institutions) has served as the former Chairman of Family Planning Association of India, where she has led various organizations like the Mahila Mandal, and is well known in the region for her free Family Planning Services, and various teaching programs for housewives, came back to Kanyakumari to fulfill the promise given to his father to take forward the tradition of providing his hometown  with good healthcare facilities.  The Foundation of SMIMS is built on these humble beginnings and high ideals.

The foundation stone of Sree Mookambika Institute was laid in1985 by Late Shri. K. V. Krishnan Nair, father of Dr. C. K. Velayuthan Nair. This was the 50-bed Velayudhan Pillai Memorial Hospital, Padanilam, Kulasekharam that started with a mission to provide compassionate and excellent quality medical services to Kanya Kumari district where there was a paucity of supply of healthcare services. The hospital was run by Dr. C. K. Velayuthan Nair (Chairman) and Dr. Rema V. Nair (Managing Director).

The Padanilam Welfare Trust was formed in 1992 to promote social-vision-focused Healthcare services for the backward and tribal communities, the welfare of the minority Malayalam speaking community in the region, and to provide quality Medical Education to rural students. The culmination of the determined efforts of the Trust in the field of higher medical education has borne fruit in the form of 5 Educational Institutions. The Padanilam Welfare Trust Complex consists of the College of Medicine, College of Nursing, Dental College, College of Allied Health Sciences, and Schools.

Sree Mookambika Institute of Medical Sciences (SMIMS) is one of the fastest emerging Medical Teaching Institutes in South India.  Admitting 100 students for MBBS every year from all over India and abroad, the Institute was started in the year 2006 for creating future medical minds in the country.  Under the eminent leadership of the surgeon Dr. C.K. Sree Mookambika Institute of Medical Sciences offers various full-time courses in an affordable range.  The Undergraduate MBBS program in SMIMS admits 100 students per year, and also offers courses in Allied Health Sciences.  It also offers Post Graduate – MD/MS courses in clinical and non clinical departments.  The eligibility for admission is set by the Dr. M.G.R. Medical University, Tamil Nadu and is based on NEET scores.  For PG programs, Candidates must qualify for the NEET PG entrance exam conducted by NBE.
