Dr Velayuthan Nair (Chairman-Padanilam Welfare Trust & Sree Mookambika Institutions) was a young, successful and well-liked Professor in Manipal, and his wife the Director Dr. Rema V. Nair (Managing Director-Padanilam Welfare Trust & Sree Mookambika Institutions) has served as the former Chairman of Family Planning Association of India, where she has led various organizations like the Mahila Mandal, and is well known in the region for her free Family Planning Services, and various teaching programs for housewives, came back to Kanyakumari to fulfill the promise given to his father to take forward the tradition of providing his hometown with good healthcare facilities. The Foundation of SMIMS is built on these humble beginnings and high ideals.
The foundation stone of Sree Mookambika Institute was laid in1985 by Late Shri. K. V. Krishnan Nair, father of Dr. C. K. Velayuthan Nair. This was the 50-bed Velayudhan Pillai Memorial Hospital, Padanilam, Kulasekharam that started with a mission to provide compassionate and excellent quality medical services to Kanya Kumari district where there was a paucity of supply of healthcare services. The hospital was run by Dr. C. K. Velayuthan Nair (Chairman) and Dr. Rema V. Nair (Managing Director).
The Padanilam Welfare Trust was formed in 1992 to promote social-vision-focused Healthcare services for the backward and tribal communities, the welfare of the minority Malayalam speaking community in the region, and to provide quality Medical Education to rural students. The culmination of the determined efforts of the Trust in the field of higher medical education has borne fruit in the form of 5 Educational Institutions. The Padanilam Welfare Trust Complex consists of the College of Medicine, College of Nursing, Dental College, College of Allied Health Sciences, and Schools.
Sree Mookambika Institute of Medical Sciences (SMIMS) is one of the fastest emerging Medical Teaching Institutes in South India. Admitting 100 students for MBBS every year from all over India and abroad, the Institute was started in the year 2006 for creating future medical minds in the country. Under the eminent leadership of the surgeon Dr. C.K. Velayudhan Nair, the institute provides an incomparable environment to aspiring medical students for pursuing Medical Education of the highest quality.
The campus of Sree Mookambika Institute of Medical Science and Hospital, set in a beautifully landscaped campus of 73 acres, nestled amongst the backdrop of the hills of the western Ghats, provides a rare combination of a bustling city life in the midst of nature. Sree Mookambika Institute of Medical Sciences offers various full-time courses in an affordable range. The Undergraduate MBBS program in SMIMS admits 100 students per year, and also offers courses in Allied Health Sciences. It also offers Post Graduate – MD/MS courses in clinical and non clinical departments. The eligibility for admission is set by the Dr. M.G.R. Medical University, Tamil Nadu and is based on NEET scores. For PG programs, Candidates must qualify for the NEET PG entrance exam conducted by NBE.

Scholarships

Sowparnika Auditorium
The air-conditioned auditorium is 60,000 sft in size, with a large stage, and a 2500 seating capacity. This is common to all the colleges in the campus and cultural events, annual days, meetings, CMEs, conferences and inter-college events are held here.
Bank / ATM
A City Union Bank facility is present on campus with an ATM for students and faculty and facilitates easy access to money and quick bank transactions.
The Central Canteen
A large canteen for staff and students, that can seat 500 people at a time is available on campus open from 8 am to 8 pm. The canteen is a welcome break for the students and a common social meeting place. It serves Indian and Chinese cuisine, both veg and non veg. It is open 24 hours during examinations to support students burning the midnight oil.
Hostels
There are 6 hostels on campus 3 separate for female UG students, CRRI and post graduates. Similarly, there are 3 hostels for male students, all under the care of a warden and individual caretaker for each hostel building. There are a total of 676 rooms for UGs, 93 rooms for PGs and 106 rooms for interns. The rooms are single occupancy with toilet/ bath attached, and is provided with a cot, cupboard, table and chair. A separate buffet mess, with a fully automated hygienic kitchen is available for the hostel students, along with continuous water supply with a reverse osmosis water treatment plant, 24 hour electricity supply with generator back-up, separate television viewing hall, and reading room with all leading news papers and periodicals. Telephone booth, indoor games hall, well-equipped gymnasium, sprawling playgrounds are additional comfort features.
It is mandatory for all students to stay in the hostel and to follow the rules and regulations set by the management.
Library
The 2000 Sq. ft. library is designed with plenty of natural light with an ambiance to support peaceful individual as well as group study, and recreational reading. It is fully automated with a book bank, question bank, online journals, and a photocopier. Numerous educational videos describing surgical procedures, clinical situations, case studies, etc are recorded and available as audio / video tapes, and compact disks.
The library is open all 7 days a week from 8.00 am to 8.30 pm.
Sports / GYM
Outdoor Sports – football court and walking path.
Indoor Sports – table tennis, carom, chess.
Fully equipped GYM – located in the medical college block.
Both indoor and outdoor games are encouraged for the development of well-balanced, young medical graduates. There is a spacious gymnasium with a well experienced health instructor.

The Little Shop
The reasonably priced Little Shop at the entrance of the campus was primarily started to make course books available for the students. But now it also sells stationery like manuals, paper, files, pencils, pens, etc for students’ daily academic needs. Understanding students’ needs, the shop also stocks personal hygiene products, domestic supplies, juices and light snacks, as well as gift articles.
Transport
The college runs a full fledged Transport department that operates 30 buses in addition to cab to extend transport facility for students and staff coming from urban and suburban areas .This service is offered ensuring a hassle-free and safe transportation. The routes have been meticulously planned covering the nook and corner of the city. The number of buses tend to increase based on the increase in the intake of student in the ensuing academic year.
