Sri Muthukumaran Institute of Technology (SMIT), popularly known as SMIT, is a self-financing engineering institution located in Mangadu, Chennai.  SMIT was established and founded in the year1996 by Thiru. A.N. Radhakrishnan, Managing Trustee, and Tmt.Gomathi Radhakrishnan, The Chairperson.  The Managing Trustee has rich teaching experience.  He is a dedicated, devoted and disciplined person with high quality of knowledge in the field of education. The chairperson of SMIT is associated with all Educational activities and has won many awards.  The SMIT administration includes Mr.L.V.Subramanian, Secretary, Advisor Dr.Muthu, Dr. D. Padmasubramanian, Principal, The governing council also has eminent members from government bodies such as AICTE, Anna University and Industrialists.  The college is in the 28th year of illustrious functioning and contributing to the cause of Engineering & Management Education.

The SMIT campus is spread in an area of 10.31 acres on a serene sylvan setting on the eastern side of the famous Mangadu Kamatchi Amman Temple on the outskirts west of Chennai city.  The atmosphere is conducive for the pursuit of Academic and Research.   The college is located on Kundrathur Main Road, Chikkarayapuram, Mangadu, Chennai, Tamil Nadu on the Kumananchavadi-Kundrathur-Tambaram road at a distance of around 15 km from Chennai city.  It is about 15 Kilometers from Tambaram Railway station and about 23 Kilometers from Parrys corner.  It is easily accessible by frequent city buses and also by a large fleet of the college buses.

SMIT is approved by AICTE, New Delhi & affiliated to Anna University, Chennai.  It has got recognition from UGC under 2(f) and 12(B) scheme. The Institute is accredited by NBA twice and by National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) with B+ grade in the year 2018.  SMIT has participated in the National Institute of Ranking Framework (NIRF) process and ARIIA Ranking as well as in the All India Survey on Higher Education (AISHE).

Sri Muthukumaran Institute of Technology is a premier Institute in the city for Degree courses including BE/BTech, ME, MBA and MCA.  Two Research Centres, one in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering and the other in Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering are functioning with the recognition of Anna University to facilitate M.S. through Research and Ph.D. programs under Anna University. 

The college has got state-of-the-art infrastructure coupled with highly qualified and experienced faculty members.  The excellent infrastructure includes separate blocks for each department with well-equipped Laboratories, spacious Classrooms, a central Library, Internet - Wi-fi, Gym, Hostel, Transport, Canteen, Sports, ICT Tool, etc.  SMIT has achieved remarkable improvement in Academies as well as Co-curricular, Extra – curricular and Placement activities.  About 50 staff members are pursuing their Ph.D in various reputed universities.  Faculty members are encouraged to present papers in many national and international conferences to tone and exhibit their technical skill and knowledge.

SMIT has a well established Placement Cell that co-ordinates the conduct of Value-added courses, Soft skills Training and provide Aptitude Training. It actively functions under the leadership of a Director Placement and Placement representatives from faculty and students from various departments.  This helps the students to get placements in reputed companies.  The major Recruiters include Accenture , Infosys, IBM, CTS and few reputed Companies like TATA Communications, SANMAR group, Maruti Suzuki, Core Engineering companies like Athena Health , Charge Bee Technologies and Symantec.

Faculty and students of SMIT have membership in various Professional societies like CSI,IEEE, ASME, MMA, ISTE, etc. which help them to improve their knowledge and skills.  Apart from these, each department have their own Student’s Association which actively organizes Paper Presentations, Mini Project Competitions, Workshops, Symposia and Co-curricular activities.

In addition SMIT Students have received various awards from reputed professional Societies.  The Alumni have made a mark for themselves both nationally and internationally having risen to high levels in the corporate environment. Through the Alumni association, they are actively involved in bringing educational reforms through Workshops on State- of-the-art domain skills, Guest Lectures and other programs to keep the students at pace with requirements of the industry.

SMIT is extending magnificent services to the society through YOUTH RED CROSS, various NSS activities like blood donation camp, first aid programs, Oratorical competition and Pradhan mandhri – Swach Bharat Clean India programs.

The SMIT has a sprawling campus at Chikkarayapuram, Near Mangadu at the out skirts of Chennai. The excellent infrastructure includes separate blocks for each department with well-equipped laboratories, spacious class rooms,a central library with more than 48,173 volumes,76 national journals and 63 international journals, e-journals and internet facility to provide a wonderful ambience for the students to learn. SMIT has well learned and experienced faculty members and well trained technicians.

Higher Secondary Examination of (10 + 2) Curriculum (Academic Stream) prescribed by the Government of Tamil Nadu with Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry.
Any examination of any other University or authority accepted by the syndicate of Anna University as equivalent thereto.
Higher Secondary Examination of Vocational Stream (Vocational groups in Engineering / Technology) as prescribed by the Government of Tamil Nadu.
Diploma in Engineering / Technology awarded by the State Board of Technical Education, Tamil Nadu or any other authority accepted by the syndicate of the University as equivalent there to.
The candidates who possess the Diploma in Engineering / Technology awarded by the State Board of Technical Education and Training, are eligible for admission to the third semester of the B.E. / B. Tech, Degree Programs in affiliated colleges through lateral entry system.
The eligibility criteria such as marks, number of attempts and physical fitness and the mode of admission shall be as prescribed by the Syndicate of the University from time to time.
The candidate shall not have completed 21 years of age as on first of July of the year of application. For candidates belonging to SC/ST the age limit is relaxable upwards by 3 years.Number of appearances, minimum marks and other criteria for admissions to B.E / B.Tech courses are as per AICTE and State government norms as follows.

Eligibility
MBA: Should be a Graduate from any recognised University.
MCA: Pass in any recognized Bachelor degree course of minimum 3 years duration in any discipline with Mathematics as one of the subjects.
M.E: Bachelor Degree of a recognized university and as regulated by the Anna University of Technology and selection of the candidate is based on the performance in the entrance test conducted by the appropriated authorities.

Training and Placement Cell
Training and Placement cell is dedicated to cater to the employment requirements as well as moulding students with correct skill sets desirable for getting employable. It actively functions under the leadership of a Director Placement and Placement representatives from faculty and students from various departments. The training and placement cell facilitates arrangement of recruiters from reputed multinational companies and organizations.

The career oriented curriculum and the soft skills training provided ensure that every student gets placed in jobs commensurate with their background, skills and competencies. The placement cell undertakes counseling, training and conduct of value added courses to ensure that students become employable for best placements.

Library
The central library of SMIT is situated in a separate block with a total area of 990 sq.m. The Library has a collection of 48303 books, 10996 titles, 3374 CD-ROM’s, 96 National Journals, 95 International Journals, Internet browsing facility, Lending, Reference and Reprographic facilities and study halls with a capacity for 150 students. The library is fully automated with AUTOLIB software and has ample desk top computers to access e-journals & e-books. The library has also digital resources facilities for students and staff such as ASCE, ASME, DELNET & IEEE online journals. Programme wise abstract of various books, journals and e-resources available in the Library.

Gymnasium
Physical fitness centres (gymnasium) with all kinds of equipment like Threadmill, Crossfir, dumbbells and heavy weight lifting for both boys and girls.
Hostel

Admission in Hostel
Admission to the hostel is based-on First come first serve policy. Students who seek admission to this hostel, have to submit an application to the warden in a prescribed, form with a passport size photograph affixed and duly signed by the student and parent / guardians.

Following facilities are provided in the Hostel
The college offers a very comfortable living accommodation with separate hostels for boys and girls within the campus under the care of resident wardens. There is one hostel for boys and one for girls with enough space to accommodate the out station students.
The college has separate hostel facilities for boys and girls with all amenities. Utmost care is taken to serve wholesome food. Adequate security arrangements have been provided for safety and security of the inmates.

The girls’ hostel houses around 400 girls. It has an independent kitchen, mess, health equipment, common room with telephone facilities.
Boys’ hostel accommodates up to 750 boys with a separate mess, common room etc. Considerable stress is laid on a clean and healthy environment.
The hostel provides hygienic and quality food to suit diverse tastes and preferences. A comfortable mess hall has also been provided. The hostel rooms are provided with table, chairs, cupboards, beds, common bath, and hot water facilities. The other common facilities include availability of telephone and television.

Canteen
There is a canteen facility for the benefit of students, staff and visitors. Food is provided at subsidized rates. Apart from this, a fast food center, which is a part of the canteen is available.

Sports
SMIT gives lot of thrust in the overall development of the students. As a part of the above, vital care is imparted in promoting sport activities throughout the year.
Sports and Games is an area much sought after by the student community of this college. Play grounds, 400 metres athletic track, swimming pool and equipment for outdoor and indoor games facilities are available for meeting the enthusiasm of such students and faculty.
Students of this college have the honour of being frequently selected to represent the Anna University in many teams. They have made remarkable achievements as winners and Runners – up ranging from the Inter – Collegiate to university level in games and athletic events and have retained the championship in the university division.
Apart from academics, the students are given enough opportunities to expose their hidden talents in sports and cultural events. The campus has a playground for outdoor games and indoor games like
