St. Mary’s College (Autonomous), a premier institution of higher education, founded by the Congregation of Mother of Sorrows servants of Mary in the year 1948, plays a significant role in shaping the destiny of innumerable young coastal women in and around Thoothukudi. With a proud legacy of 72 years, the college has excelled in every discipline keeping in pace with the global trends in the academia. Enhancing human dignity by empowering the women has been its main concern. Started primarily to benefit the catholic minority, the college strives hard to reach out to the society, mostly identified as economically backward and socially underprivileged. Slow and steady progress marked the growth of the college and higher education for women gained momentum. The strong back up of committed service rendered by the teaching faculty and supportive staff has brought many laurels to our institution. Quality initiative, Quality sustenance and Quality enhancement are the keywords of every activity.
St. Mary’s College lives upto the founders’ lofty vision of making young women agents of an egalitarian society through liberative education. The pursuit of our institution is to channelise fruitfully the potentials of the young generation and help them experience a gratifying growth in their personality and career. We are proud that the college today is equipped with the best of faculty, infrastructure and systems to support its mission to teach and train women to be emotionally balanced, morally upright, spiritually integrated, socially sensitive and globally competitive. The institution imparts an education that promises an integral growth of knowledge, skills and values, thus promoting an environment of composite culture and religious harmony in the campus.
The college, affiliated to Manonmaniam Sundaranar University, has attained Autonomous Status in the year 2009. Recognizing the great potential within the campus, the NAAC has reaccredited the institution with ‘A+’ grade in its fourth cycle. Learning is made more informative, interactive and collaborative with efficient and effective ICT enabled teaching. With the implementation of autonomy, the institution has been able to design its own curricula and evaluation system. The flexibility and space provided by autonomy has paved way for widening our academic arena with the inputs from the external experts and representatives from the industry in our curriculum designing exercise.

PLACEMENT CELL
As a great effort, Career Guidance and Placement Cell collaborated with IBM Volunteers for the uplift of girls students who were economically challenged. Final year UG and PG (more than two hundred) students werethe beneficiaries of the training programmeoffered by IBM Volunteer. Students were asked to register their names in National Career Service (NCS) under Ministry of Labour and Employment. In the month of July 2021, every Saturday, this team conducted career opportunity and skill building programmes. Students were segregated according to their job preference. Eleven mentor groups were formed with 10 students in each group with one internal mentor and one IBM mentor.The groups were named after the planets in the solar system. Motivationand mentoring were given to the targeted students through Google meet platform. Students were advised to do skill development programmes and trained to write good resume. Mr. Naveen. K. Prathapaneni, Service Lead, MIND and Mrs. Chandrakala Vootkar, Co-Service Lead, MIND along with Dr. Flora and members of the Career Guidance and Placement Cell were the organizers of the programmes.
The Career Guidance and Placement cell organised its first meeting on 7th August 2019 for the final year UG and PG students. The meeting was arranged as three different sessions for the III UG Arts, III UG Science and II PG students in the Auditorium, Star Hall, Fatima Hall respectively. Mrs. Purnima, Managing Director, Edify solutions, Mr.Vijay Raj Elan Kumaran and Mr.Rajkumaran, Trainers , Edify solutions were the resource persons. The III UG and II PG students were the beneficiaries. The resource persons addressed on the topic “Employability Skills and Comprehensive Personality”.
For the III UG Arts students, the programme started with a very creative introductory session. Mrs. Purnima, in her address, emphasised the need for employability skills before choosing a career. She gave a brief explanation about the hard and soft skills. The students were well-motivated to become a better person in the professional life.

Fee Concessions and Scholarships for students
The Management and the Government, both the State and the Central, help the students for their study. Eligibility conditions are announced when needed. The scholarships can be availed through duly filled in prescribed application forms submitted to the office (where these forms are issued at request). These application forms should be submitted only after enrollment in the college. Scholarship and Fee concession holders must secure 90% attendance, failing which they run the risk of losing these scholarships and concessions. Students may enquire in the office about fee concession, free education, and other scholarships. The Management gives fee concession to deserving and poor students who do not receive scholarships or concessions of any kind.

The college hostel is the home of women students. The administration strives to provide the best atmosphere to foster human values and learning for personal growth. Library
The College Central Library is one of the central support services of the college. The Central Library is well equipped with modern facilities and resources in the form of books, Journals, Magazines, Dailies, CD-ROM/DVD, Online databases, E-Journals, E-Books, Audio-Video Cassettes, Books, Journals, Project reports, etc. Library the gateway to knowledge has an ample collection of around 48,381 Books, and 90 Periodicals (ie., Journals and Magazines ) to enrich and empower the knowledge of the user community.
I.T Infrastructure
The college has an excellent IT Infrastructure facility for the students.
Sports
The College's large playground comprises Clay courts for Volley Ball, Kho-Kho, Kabaddi, and an Indoor stadium for Basket Ball, Ball Badminton, and Table Tennis. We are fully equipped to conduct athletic events such as hurdles race, high jump, long jump, shot put, and javelin throw. In Sports and games, the college has made a landmark achievement by retaining the Manonmaniam Sundaranar University overall trophy 25 times consecutively. Our college has contributed much to the sports history of MS University of Tamil Nadu.

The College Students can avail the canteen facilities but they are not permitted to use or come to the canteen during class hours.
