Tata Institute of Fundamental Research - 2025 Admission, Fees, Courses, Ranking, Placement
The Institute was founded on 1st June1945 with support from the Sir Dorabji Tata Trust. The Institute first began functioning within the Cosmic Ray Research Unit on the campus of the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore and moved to Bombay in October that year.
In Bombay the Institute was housed at Kenilworth, a bungalow on Pedder Road. It was inaugurated by Sir John Colville, Governor of Bombay on 19th December 1945. In 1949, as the Institute grew, it found its second home at the Old Yacht Club Building (former home of Royal Bombay Yacht Club) near Gateway of India. The Cosmic Ray Group was the first to start functioning. The Nuclear Emulsion and the Electron Magnetism Group started in 1953. Work in Computer Science and Technology in 1954, and the first pilot machine became operational in 1956. The full scale machine, later named the TIFRAC was commissioned in February 1960.
The foundation stone of the main building at the Colaba campus was laid by Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru in 1954. This constitutes the Institute's main campus at present. The modern building on the seafront with gardens, lawns and a seaside promenade was designed by the Chicago architect, Helmuth Bartsch. The building was inaugurated by Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru on 15 January 1962.

Candidates must register themselves on the TIFR website and fill in the application form of TIFR GS.
After filling the form check all the information filled thoroughly before proceeding to the next step.
Applicants may give the entrance test for different subjects, however; they must apply for each program separately and pay the fees accordingly.
Applicants can submit the fee either online or offline by DD. The application fee for male candidates is Rs.900/- and for female candidates is Rs.300/-.
After paying the fee the candidate must submit the form and take a print out of the same.
Candidates who apply through offline mode must fill in the application form and send it to the address mentioned on the website along with the DD and 2 recent passport size photographs.
The details to be mentioned in the form are-
10th and 12th mark sheet.
Graduation marks.
Scanned copy of the photograph.
Scanned copy of the signature.
TIFR Mumbai Admissions- Application Process
Step 1- Visit the Graduate School Admissions official website and click on ‘apply online’ under the application tab.
Step 2- Enter a valid email address in the basic registration form. An SMS and email will be sent to the registered number and email address containing the login credentials.
Step 3- Once logged in, click the "Go to Application" link on the right-top corner of the page and complete the full application process.
Step 4- Pay the application fee (non-refundable) for male candidates- Rs. 1200, female candidates- Rs. 600 through banking/debit/credit card/UPI or other modes as available on the payment gateway.
Step 5- After successful online payment, kindly log in account on the website by using your application sequence number as your user-id and check the payment status. An automated confirmation email will be sent to the registered email address after the successful payment.
Step 6- Take out a printout of the TIFR Mumbai application form for future reference.
TIFR Mumbai Placements
Placement assistance is provided to students by the placement cell of the institution. Every year, TIFR Mumbai placements are conducted for the final year students. Companies interested in recruiting students for placements at TIFR Mumbai must follow the TIFR Mumbai placement process; sending invitations to interested companies, registration, pre-placement talks and selection tests. According to the TIFR Mumbai placement report for postgraduate courses for 2019-20 (as per the NIRF report), 14 students were eligible for placements, out of which 12 received job offers with a median salary of Rs. 3,60,000. On the other hand, 4 students opted for higher studies after completion of a 3-year postgraduate course at TIFR Mumbai. The median salary offered to students after completing a postgraduate 3-year course at Tata Institute of Fundamental Research Mumbai was Rs. 4,80,000.
It has a well placed placement department. The placement cell is able to invite many multinational and national companies to our campus for recruiting. Companies such as TCS, WIPRO, INFOSYS, HDFC, AXIS BANK, ICICI BANK vist institute to conduct campus interviews. They provided a competitive salary for students based on their capabilities and abilities. The minimum salary they offered was 3.5 lakhs annually, and the most lucrative salary package was 8 lakh rupees per year.
TIFR Mumbai Scholarships
Tata Institute of Fundamental Research Mumbai students is given fellowships as per the rules of DAE. They get Rs. 25,000 and Rs. 28,000 per month for the students before and after the Ph.D. registration respectively. To avail TIFR Mumbai scholarships, candidates must meet the prescribed eligibility criteria. All the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research scholarships come from DAE.
