Thanthai Periyar Government Institute of Technology, a renowned institution of higher learning located in Vellore was established in July 1990.  It is one of the eleven Government Engineering Colleges in Tamil Nadu which is fully governed by the Directorate of Technical Education (DoTE) of the Government of Tamil Nadu.  It belongs to Zone 6 of Anna University.

The Thanthai Periyar Government Institute of Technology (TPGIT) is a Government Engineering Institution located on Chitteri Road, Bagayam, Vellore, Tamilnadu.  The Institute is nestled amidst sprawling Green Campus Environment of 28 acres of land.  TPGIT is 130 km west of Chennai and 220 km east of Bangalore.  It is connected to both these cities by buses that leave from the heart of the town.  Bus no.1, 2 connects the college with Katpadi Railway Junction (12 km), which is directly connects to Chennai, Bangalore and from there to the rest of India.  The nearest airport is Chennai International Airport.  

Thanthai Periyar Government Institute of Technology is approved by All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) and admits students purely on single window system of admissions.  The TPGIT, Vellore is affiliated to Anna University.  The National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) has granted accreditation to the institution.

TPGIT offers a span of UG and PG Courses in Full Time mode, viz. BE, ME and MCA.  The institute also offers Part Time UG programs - BE in Mechanical Engg and BE in ECE.   Facilities are also available for pursuing Ph.D. in the Department of Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electronics & Communication Engineering.  Valid TNEA scores are required for admission to the UG Courses.  Admissions to the PG Courses are based on authentic TANCET/GATE scores.
