HISTORY
The American College,a higher education known for its focus on academic excellence and social relevance. Its pioneering role in the development of College autonomy in India, its successful early implementation of Choice Based Credit System in 1978 and its completion of 135 years of servics bear testimony to the position that the college currently enjoys. Originally founded as a missionaries in 1841, The American College grew into a collegiate department in 1881 at Pasumalai by the initiatives taken by Rev.G.T.Washburn,the Founder-Principal of the college.In the year 1906,the college was shifted to the present campus during the time of the second Principal Rev.W.M.Zumbro.it became independent of the mission in 1934 when an autonomous Governing council was formed to manage it own affairs.Earlier,it was affiliated to the University of Madras and later,it came under the jurisdiction of Madurai Kamaraj University.
With its extreme sensitivity to national policies and community needs, the college has grown from strength to strength. It was one of the first set of seven colleges to be made autonomous by the UGC in 1977-1978.Today the college offers thirty undergraduate and sixteen post-graduate Programmes. There are seven research centres offering M.Phil., and Ph.D Programmes in various disciplines,and two autonomous centres like Department of Applied Sciences (DAS) and Study Centre for Indian Literature in English and Translation (SCILET) receiving national and international attention. Its alumni shine as luminaries internationally as scientists, intellectuals, administrators, corporate managers, statesman and leaders. The College has active theatre groups, National Service Scheme, N.C.C. units and service learning Programme (SLP) that offer students a wide variety of opportunities to serve society. These activities add up to make the campus a vibrant for developing one’s personality.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS FOR UNDERGRADUATE PROGRAMMES
AIDED
Candidates should qualify under any of the following examinations:
Candidates who have passed Higher Secondary Examination of the Board of Higher Secondary Examination, Government ofTamil Nadu.
Candidates who have passed Senior School Certificate Examination (XII standard) of the Central Board of Secondary Examination with not less than five subjects of which English shall be one.
Candidates who have passed ICS Examination of the Council for Indian School Certificate Examination with not less than five subjects, of which English shall be one.
Candidates who have passed any Examination conducted by a State Government or a University or Board under the 10+2 pattern with not less than five subjects, of which English shall be one.
Candidates from other universities or bodies and those from other countries having qualification not listed above should send their transcripts to The Registrar, Madurai Kamaraj University, Madurai – 625 021, Tamilnadu, India and obtain provisional eligibility certificate for admission as per Government of India circular, Ministry of Education, dated 20thApril1992.
Additional Requirements for Specific Programmes:
For B.Sc. Mathematics I Physics I Chemistry: Mathematics, Physics, and Chemistry as subjects at the Higher Secondary level.
For B.A. Economics, preference will be given to candidates with Mathematics as a subject at the Higher Secondary level.
For B.Com., Commerce as a subject under the academic or vocational stream at the Higher Secondary level.
For B.Sc. Zoology I B.Sc. Botany : Biology or Botany and Zoology as subjects at the Higher Secondary level.
Note: Each undergraduate student should opt for any one of the following co- curricular activites. Any activity chosen thus will be for four semesters.

Eligibility
A pass in Bachelor’s Degree in Social Sciences / Humanities / Business Management / Commerce or any Science degree from a recognized university is required for applying. Those who are awaiting the final semester results can also apply. However, their admission, if selected, will be provisional and will be confirmed only if they produce the final mark sheet of the qualifying examinations on or before the deadline fixed by the college in this regard. M.Sc. Immunology and Microbiology
Eligibility
Candidates with a Bachelor’s degree in any life science subjects ( Zoology / Microbiology / Biochemistry /Biotechnology / Botany / Biology / Pharmacy / Food & Nutrition / Nursing ) are eligible to apply. Those who are awaiting the final semester / year results can also apply. ENTRANCE TESTS / COUNSELLING FOR PG PROGRAMMES
Candidates applying for postgraduate programmes are required to take corresponding Entrance Tests/Counselling as given in the schedule below. Candidates who do not appear for Entrance Tests/Counselling will NOT be considered for admission.
The candidates will be tested for their basic understanding of the major subject concerned, analytical ability and creativity.
Ranking will be made on the basis of weighing the UG marks against the Entrance Test / Counselling marks on a 50:50 ratio

PLACEMENT CELL
The American College has been committed to excellence since its inception especially in terms of moulding the future of its students. The Placement Cell of The American College is committed to providing placement support to students matching their interest areas and academic profile and based on the demand from the external milieu. The cell focuses on students especially the outgoing (final year students) from both under-graduate and post-graduate programmes of aided and self-financed programmes. The placement Cell conducts placement related training and awareness programmes in the campus and organizes campus interviews and placement drives for the benefit of both aided and self-financed stream students.
Hostel
History
The foundation stone for Wallace Hall was laid on 21st January 1946 by Dr. Albert Bucker Coe, Minister of Oak Park church, Illinois; U.S.A. Wallace Hall was earlier accommodating undergraduate students and was converted into a Postgraduate students hall in the recent years. This hall houses ninety eight P.G Students and two superintendents.
Hostel Administration
The Warden of the Hall is responsible for the day-to-day administration of the Hall. The superintendents of the Hall will assist the warden in his day to day administration. Matters pertaining to policies are taken in the Hostel Board meetings of the college. The views and voices of the inmates of the hall are represented through the periodic meetings of the hall cabinet that consists of an elected general secretary, a sports secretary, a prayer secretary and a mess manager. The student residents run the hostel mess under the dividing system. The cabinet is elected by the residents of the hall and implementation of any new programmes is always through the cabinet.
Room Details and Occupants
All the rooms are mosquito proof, with sufficient lighting. The mess adjacent to the hall can accommodate 80 inmates at a time.
Timing
There are fixed timings for dining and entertainment.
Study Hours
From Monday to Thursday, the study hours of the hall will be between 8.30. p.m. and 10.30 p.m. During the study hours, students should do quiet reading. If any Saturday is declared as working day then the previous night [i.e., Friday night] will have regular study hours.
Special Programmes for Inmates
Spoken English are held to the interested inmates, who like to improve their English communication skills.
A library with books on General Knowledge, entrance and competitive examinations is available for reference for the residents. It is under the custody of the Home secretary.
All final year inmates are facilitated to get two – wheeler and light motor vehicle license.
Interested final year students are facilitated to obtain passport.
Karate classes are regularly held and at the end of academic year green belt is provided to the qualified learners. To motivate the inmates to develop their physical structure,”Fun Run” is organized at the beginning of every academic year.
Student’s Service Committee-SSC
Bringing out the hidden potential of youth in every sphere is very important in present day context. Being a college student, moulding one’s character involves utilizing their potential in a useful way which is the one of the foremost duty of every academic institution. The American College has a very powerful tradition of bringing out such talents of its students for over many decades.
We are happy to present the activities of Student’s Services Committee through its network of activities which interconnects every talented student of our college across the departments. The SSC has conducted and involved students in many programs to enrich and elicit various talents.
canteen
Aesthetically designed canteen provides refreshments and meals at affordable prices. It is of immense help for the day scholars commuting long distance. Students can visit the canteen during free hours to refresh themselves and to spend time together.
FITNESS CENTRE
A well-equipped gym is one of the latest additions to promote the awareness of physical fitness among students. Both men and women students have access to it. A qualified trainer manages the center to offer professional advice.
