The Madurai Diraviyam Thayumanavar Hindu College, Tirunelveli, founded in 1878 has been a feather added to the cap of Tirunelveli city. It functions in a total area of 83 acres. The college is located at Pettai in the outskirts of Tirunelveli city. It has been a centre of learning catering for the needs of young men and women of all creeds.
The University of Madras was bifurcated in 1966. The colleges in South Tamilnadu came under the control of Madurai University, which was later renamed as Madurai Kamaraj University. Again, when Madurai Kamaraj University was bifurcated, the College got affiliated to Manonmaniam Sundaranar University, Tirunelveli. The College holds the high honour of having "Manonmaniam Sundaranar" as its first Principal.
The College has attained a "2(f) and 12(B)" status according to UGC Regulation Act. Presently the College functions with 9 UG programmes, 5 PG programmes and 5 Research Departments in the Aided stream and 6 UG programmes and one M.Phil programme in the Self-Financed stream..
The College celebrated its centenary year in 1979. The celebration was graced by the presence of the Honourable Prime Minister Shri.Moraji Desai, His Excellency Shri.Prabhu Dass Patwari, Governer of Tamilnadu and the Honourable Chief Minister Shri.M.G.Ramachandran. In 2004 the college celebrated its 125th year Post Centenary Silver Jubilee. The Honourable Finance Minister of India Shri.P.Chidambaram, the Honourable Home Minister (State) of India Shri.S.Ragupathy, Honourable Shri.S.Rathnavel Pandian, Former Justice Supreme Court of India, the Honourable Shri. P.H.Pandian, Former Speaker of Tamilnadu Legislative Assembly, were some of the men of high reputation who took part in the celebrations.
The management feels proud of serving the poor and the downtrodden. It receives capitation neither for admission nor for appointments.

Every student shall wear a clean and presentable uniform introduced by the college
Every student shall greet the members of the staff of the college when he meets them for the first time during the day.
When the member of the staff enters the class room the students shall get up and remain standing till they are asked to sit or the member of the staff takes his / her seat.
Every student is expected to provide himself with the required books in every subject.
Every student shall aim at such behaviour in the classroom that he shall not in the least create any disturbance.
Every student shall endeavour to attend classes regularly and shall refrain from doing anything calculated to affect the attendance of the other students.
Every student shall sit in the place assigned to him in the classroom.
Students coming late to the class shall enter only with the permission of the teacher.
No student shall be permitted to leave the class before the end of the period.
Students shall not loiter about the college campus or stand in groups in the approaches to the college. They should ensure a calm atmosphere of study and orderliness.
Students attending lectures, working in laboratories or attending meetings shall maintain perfect silence.
Students getting out of a classroom or moving from one classroom to another shall do so in an orderly manner without making noise.
Irregular attendence, insubordination to teachers, habitual indifference to class work, obscenity in word or action and such other conduct considered to be unbecoming of a student shall be dealt with severely.
Students shall handle all college property with care and endeavour to preserve the cleanliness of the buildings furniture and college campus. Any damage done to the properties of the college inadvertently will be made good at the cost of the student concerned. Any wilful damage will be seriously dealt with.
Smoking is strictly prohibited within the College campus.
No student shall bring in to the college premises pets unauthorised books or other objectionable articles of any kind.
No notice or petition of any kind shall be circulated among the students or put on the notice board or any where within the college premises without the written sanction of the principal.
Students are forbidden to organise any meeting in the college or collect money for any purpose without the permission of the Principal.
The attention of students is drawn to the following Disciplinary Regulations for colleges issued by the Government of Tamilnadu for strict compliance.
a. Students should abstain from active participation in party or communal politics.
b. Principal of the college may frame and issue from time to time disciplinary rules of a permanent or temporary character regulating the conduct, outside the college of students on the rolls so far as such rules seem necessary to maintain the credit, usefulness and reputation of the college.
c.Principal or other constituted college authorities shall have power to inflict punishments, in the interests of the institution.
No Social Function shall be held within the college campus without the permission of the principal.
Students are expected to conduct themselves in such a way to project and promote the fair image of the college.
IDENTITY CARD
Every student must be in possession of the identity card during college hours and produce it on demand by any member of the staff at any time.
CLASS HOURS
The working hours are from 10.00 am to 4pm having five periods of one hour duration.
The first bell is rung five minutes before the beginning of the forenoon and the second bell at the hour fixed for the commencement of the class. Students are expected to take their seats in their respective class rooms before the second stroke of the bell. The bell shall also be rung at the end of each period.
PRAYER
At the stroke of the second bell during forenoon session a prayer song is played on the Public Address system when all shall stand and pray silently till the song is over. Any student who is on his way to his class when the prayer song is played shall stop immediately and proceed only after the prayer song is over.

The scholarship awarded to a student will be continued till the student completes the course of study at the university provided the student shows satisfactory progress with no arrears in each University Examination. 22. FRIENDS OF PHYSICS ENDOWMENT (B.SC. PHYSICS STUDENTS OF 1990 -1993)

Physics students of 1990 - 1993 to be awarded to two students from the endowment fund of Rs. 10,000 / - (Rupees Ten Thousands only) This scholarship may be awarded to two students, one for the II B.Sc., Physics student and the other in the part III subjects in the I year and II year University Examinations respectively without any arrears. The interest amount may be equally distributed among the awardees. Incase there are no such students this scholarship may be awarded to the two best I year B.Sc Physics students who have joined with highest marks in Physics in the Higher Secondary Examinations.
23. THIRU. A.L.SUBRAMANIAN B.SC.,B.L SHASHTIAPTHA POORTHI SCHOLARSHIP (INSTITUTED BY THE TEACHING STAFF OF M.D.T. HINDU COLLEGE, TIRUNELVELI - 10)
The scholarship shall b e paid to deserving meritorious and bright student of The. M.D.T. Hindu College, who must be the son / daughter of a member of the teaching staff of our college. If a son or daughter of the teaching staff is not available, the award may pass on to a son / daughter of a non teaching staff of The M.D.T. Hindu College. If no student is found eligible during a particular year the amount of scholarship shall be carried forward to the successive year and paid to a student who satisfies the conditions mentioned in paras 4 and 5.

Lecturer in zoology) 60% of the interest should be given to a III year zoology student who has secured the highest marks in zoology in the university exams. 40% of the interest should be given to a student of II year zoology who has secured the first mark in zoology. 35. THIRU. PUDUMAIPITHAN CENTURY MEMORIAL ENDOWMENT PRIZE:
This cash prize is instituted by The M.D.T. Hindu College & School Old Student’s Association on the occasion of the Mupperum Vizha held in our school on 13th February 2006. with a corpus fund Rs. 40000/- (Rupees Forty Thousand only) of which Rs. 35000/- was contributed by the Old Student’s Association and Rs. 5000/- by Mrs. Dinakari Chockkalingam daughter of Thiru. Pudumaipithan. The interest received from the corpus fund is to be utilised for awarding three cash prizes every year to the best three short stories in Tamil written by our college students. A three member committee will scrutinise the short stories received for the competition and rank them for the award. The Head of the Department of Tamil of our college will be the Chairperson of the committee and the other two members to be nominated by the Principal of our college one may be an old student of our college / school. The decision of the committee will be final. In case no short story is found fit for a particular rank (or rank) the prize amount along with the balance amount, if any, will be added to the corpus fund. If two or more students qualify for the award the prize money shall be equally shared by them all. If no student is found to be eligible for the award during a particular year then the interest accured shall be added to the corpus fund of the arakkattalai.

40. SECRETARY A.L.S MEMORIAL ENDOWMENT
The M.D.T.Hindu College and the M.D.T.Hindu College Higher Secondary school are administered by the Educational society, Tirunelveli. Late Thiru A.L..Subramanian was the 15th President of the society and college for brief period of 4 years from 1976-1980 and 24th secretary of the Society for 22years from June, 1990 to October,2012
In order to pay homage and tribute to the distinguished Secretary and to fulfill his desire to uplift the students' community of socially and economically marginalized sector of the rural society both in college and school, it was decided to create an Endowment in the name of The Secretary A.L.S. Memorial Endowment.
Friends and well wishers of A.L.S. and Staff of Our College & School contributed liberally and a sum of Rs 11,50,000/- was deposited as corpus fund of the Endowment. During the Donor's Day Celebration held on 06.07.2013 Thavathiru Dr.Mouna Kumaraswamy Thambiran Swamigal of Tharumai Aatheeanam inaugurated the Secretary A.L.S Memorial Endowment.
The conditions of the Endowment are that 15% of the interest accrued shall be spent for the function to be held on 5th September of every year at The .M.D.T.Hindu College Hr.Sec.School premises being the date of birth of Thiru A.L.Subramanian .An eminent person may be invited as Chief Guest for the function.
Out of the remaining 85% balance of the accrued interest 50% of the amount will be awarded to the first five top rankers of X std of the M.D.T.H.C.Hr.Sec.School towards the total Tuition fees to pursue their +2 Study , provided they should continue their studies in our school .The residual balance will be allotted for the delivery of uniform to poor students as decided by the Management Committee.
The remaining 50% of the interest amount accrued in a year shall be equally awarded to the students of the M.D.T.Hindu College who score highest marks in 4 Semesters (I year and II Year) in B.A.Eco., (Tamil) ,BA .Eco. (English),B.Com., B.Sc. Maths ,Physics ,Chemistry, Zoology ,Computer Science and Physical Education.
On 05.09.2013 the renovated Seminar Hall in the college premises was named as Secretary A.L.S.Meeting Hall and declared open by Dr.M.Palaniappan M.D.,D.T.R.D.(Chest) F.C.C.P.(U.S.A), Appollo Hospitial Madurai. The first Endowment cash prizes were awarded to the meritorious students of the college and Higher Secondary School by ThiruKailayaparambarai Sengol Aatheenam 102 Gurumaha Sannithanam Srilasri Kalyanasundara Sathiya Gnanaparamacharial Swamigal of Perungulam.
41. SECRETARY THIRU K.N.AMMAIAPPA MUTHALIAR ENDOWMENT SCHOLARSHIP
Dr.A.Namasivayam former Principal of The M.D.T.Hindu College has created an Endowment in the name of his father Secretary Thiru K.N.Ammaiappa Muthaliar Endowment Scholorship with a sum of Rs 1,00,000/-
The interest accrued from the corpus found will be awarded as Scholarship to two well disciplined students who are not eligible to receive any financial Assistance (scholarship) except merit scholarship of the Government
1) Top Scorer in +2 Exams admitted in the first year degree courses in the college
2) The top scorer in English in +2 Exam admitted in the College The above scholarship is to be awarded only at the end of the first year of their study in our College

1. To conduct seminars every year under the caption “Tamil Professor Memorial”
2. To invite a chief guest to speak about the Tamil scholars and to spend Rs. 2000/. For the expenses
3.The remaining interest amount may be spent for conducting seminars on Tamil Literature.
44. THIRU.S RAJENDRAN MEMORIAL ENDOWMENT RS.1,50,000/.(INSTITUTED BY TMTY.S.AVUDAI RATHINAM)
The interest accured may be awarded as scholarship for two students in aided courses belonging to Saiva vellala community who had secured highest marks in +2 exam (I & II rank) admitted in the college for first year. In the absence of saiva vellala students the scholarship may be awarded to a student of any forward community Saiva Mudaliar / Chettiar / Brahmin. If no eligible students are available the interest amount may be carried over to the subsequent year.

The interest amount may be given to M.A.Tamil student for two years who is getting any other scholarship and come from poor family.

The interest accured in a year should be given as Book prize to two students one for II B.Sc Physics and another student of II M.Sc Physics who have scored highest mark.
LANGUAGE LAB
A language Laboratory has been established to improve the communication skills of the students. The laboratory is fully computerized with 41 individual headphones with microphone and this enables the students to practice pronunciation. Pronunciation software at the cost of Rs.1, 00,000 has been installed in all the computers in the laboratory. Apart from that many other language soft-wares such as BBC, Cambridge and TOEFL have been provided for language improvement.
Thus the college is very keen in developing the communication skills and personality traits of the students.
COMPUTER SCIENCE LAB
Two Computer Science laboratories for Aided stream and Unaided stream have sufficient computers catering to the need of the syllabi and learners. The computers are with latest configuration, syllabi-oriented and updated software.

PHYSICS LAB
The department of Physics offers UG and PG programmes. The department was upgraded as a research department in 2015. The department has excellent and separate laboratories for UG and PG. The UG lab is well equipped with all necessary instruments with a seating capacity of 40 students. The PG lab functions by solar energy, So that the lab functions even during power failure. It is a research oriented lab with modern equipment. The lab includes a separate computer lab with internet connectivity.
CHEMISTRY LAB
There are sophisticated, updated separate labs for major and ancillary subjects. Each lab can accommodate 36 students at a time. The lab has the modern equipment such as visible spectrometer, PH Meter, magnetic stirrer, muffle furnace, GV visible cabinet which are purchased under UGC minor research projects. The lab is provided with internet connectivity for the usage of learners.
ZOOLOGY LAB
The lab has a seating capacity of 36, provided with traditional and modern gadgets to meet the current standards of M.S.University syllabus. It has a museum with unique specimens which is frequently visited by the students from various schools and colleges. The department library shelf's about 2000 books. It is ICT facilitated also.
BOTANY LAB
The department has a perfect lab, sufficient enough to accommodate 40 learners. It is equipped with rare specimens that enable quality education to students. It is also provided with internet connectivity. There is more than 300 books in the department library.
NETWORK LAB
Networking Computer laboratory has been setup with the support of DST FIST-2014 Grant with 16 computers. This caters the need of PG students and Research Scholars

Library is the index of this traditional and prestigious institution. It functions in a spacious and well equipped building. The library is facilitated with 16 computers 3 printers and a Xerox machine.
The life of the individual is decided by what he reads. To promote the reading habit, the library is stacked with a voluminous number of64,259 Books, 80409 e-books, 28 Journals, 3828 e.Journals, 23Magazines, 29 Thesis and 275 Back volumes, 149 CDs and MathSciNet Database.
Apart from the main library, thousands of books are collected and maintained by the various departments of the college.
DIGITAL LIBRARY
UGC-INFLIBNET, N.LIST, e.ShodhSindhu An Initiative of Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) under the NME-ICT now funded by UGC as college component under e.ShodhSindhu Consortium.
INFLIBNET facility is available and accessible to receive thousands of online volumes on various disciplines.
The N-LIST project provides access to e resources to students, researchers and faculty from colleges and other beneficiary institutions through server(s) installed at the INFILBNET centre. The authorized users from colleges can now access e-resources and download articles required by them directly from the publisher's website once they are duty authenticated as authorized users through servers deployed at the INFLIBNET Centre.
Also there is a spacious and airy reading room which can accommodate 100 students at a time to enjoy reading.
