 About

The Tamil Nadu Medical University Act, 1987 received the assent of the former President of the Republic of India Dr. R. Venkataraman on 24 September 1987 and The Tamil Nadu Dr. M.G.R. Medical University started functioning from July 1988 and is governed by the said act.  By 1991, Kalaignar M. Karunanithi, the then Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu named this affiliated University after the former Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu Dr. M. G. Ramachandran (M.G.R.) through The Tamil Nadu Dr. M.G.R. Medical University, Chennai Act, 1987.  It is one of the premier Medical Universities in India, and is the second largest Health Sciences University in India after Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences, Karnataka.

Apart from modern medicine, The Tamil Nadu Dr. M.G.R. Medical University also takes into account other traditional systems of Indian Medicine viz. Siddha, Ayurveda and Unani. The intension was to bring about co-ordination between various educational and training institutions of modern medicine as well as other Indian Systems of Medicine, Dentistry, Nursing, Pharmacy, etc. and promote research.  

The Tamil Nadu Dr. M.G.R. Medical University is the only medical university in Tamil Nadu capable of granting affiliation to new Medical and Paramedical colleges under Government or Self-financing, in Medical, Dental, Indian Medicine/Homoeopathy & Allied Health Sciences (Pharmacy, Nursing, Physiotherapy, Occupational therapy etc.) and awarding Degrees under a single umbrella to maintain uniform and high standards of education.  It may be noted that until 1988 all Degrees in Health Sciences in Tamil Nadu were awarded by the University of Madras.

The Chancellor and Pro-Chancellor of the University are the Governor and the Minister of Health and Family Welfare of Tamil Nadu, respectively.  The Vice-Chancellor is the main Academic Officer and Administrator in the everyday functioning of the University and is appointed by the Government of Tamil Nadu.

The Tamil Nadu Dr. M.G.R. Medical University is now functioning in its own building at Nawab Garden, Anna Salai, Guindy, Chennai, Tamil Nadu with effect from 12.6.1994.  It is located in 10 acre of land, about 7 km (4.3 mi) from the Chennai International Airport and about 13 km (8.1 mi) from the Puratchi Thalaivar Dr. M.G. Ramachandran Central Railway Station.

The Tamil Nadu Dr. M.G.R. Medical University is a Public Medical University recognized by the University Grants Commission (UGC) and the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC).   It is approved by The Medical Council of India (MCI).

The TNMGRM University offers courses at all levels in all areas of Medicine namely Medical, Dental, Indian Medicine and Homoeopathy Courses, Allied Health Sciences, Post Doctoral Fellowship, Pharmacy, Nursing, Physio Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Indigenous Medicine, and Allied Health Sciences.  The students can choose from BSc, BSc (Post Basic), MBBS, BPT, B.Pharm, D.Pharm, MD, MS, DM and MSc Programs. The accepted eligibility exams are NEET, NEET PG, AIAPGET.  The University also promotes research and disseminates knowledge gained there from.  Candidates who meet the Dr MGR Medical University cutoff must attend the counselling session.  However, TNMGRMU courses are offered based on the merit of the previous qualifying examinations.

MBBS students after completion of CRBI & obtaining an RMP member with the Medical Council of India (MCI) and TN State Medical Council can practice as General practitioners (GP).

PG students can run an independent hospital or can be consultants after completion & updation of degrees in both councils.

BSc, PG diploma can be absorbed in their institution itself after skilled training depending on the demand

Admission Process 2025

The admission process for The Tamil Nadu Dr. M.G.R. Medical University (MGR Medical University) for the year 2025 is primarily conducted online through the official portals such as www.tnmedicalselection.org or the university’s website www.tnmgrmu.ac.in. Candidates seeking admission must first appear and qualify in the relevant entrance examinations, most notably the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) for undergraduate medical (MBBS, BDS) courses.

For postgraduate courses like MD, MS, MDS, and others, NEET-PG and NEET-MDS scores are required respectively. After obtaining the entrance exam results, candidates need to register and apply online by creating a user ID and password, filling in personal and academic details, uploading scanned certificates, and paying the application fee through online modes such as debit/credit cards, net banking, or UPI. Selection Process

The selection process involves multiple stages: after submission of the application, shortlisted candidates based on the entrance exam merit are called for counseling. During counseling, candidates must fill in their course and college preferences, undergo document verification (including academic certificates, caste and community certificates if applicable, nativity certificate, and transfer certificates), and pay the counseling fee. The counseling sessions lead to final seat allotment based on merit, preferences, and seat availability. MGR University Placement

The Tamil Nadu MGR Medical University, being a medical university, there is no such provision called placement for its students. But there are certain facilities similar to the placement drive, they are as follows:

• The M.B.B.S. students, who have completed the CRBI & obtaining an RMP member with MCI & Tamil Nadu state Medical council can practice as GP.  The candidates will be informed of the vacancies as and when it occurs. Furthermore, the candidates can approach the authorities to know more about the requirement of the GP.
• The P.G. students after completion of their course, and the Upgradation of their degree in both councils can run an independent civilization or hospital or can be a consultant. They can also apply for the assistant professor’s role. The like vacancies are informed to the CDCC so that the junior doctors can be directed with the same
• The candidates with a B.Sc degree and  P. G. Diploma  degree after skilled training  are absorbed in the institution, according to the requirement of the institution itself
• Other Post Doctoral courses are offered to students who are already practicing.

Internships Opportunities

The college provides compulsory internship soon after the course is completed. During internship stipend of 25k is provided. After internship you can work in private nd government hospitals to improve you skills with a minimum salary of 50k. One can work as medical officer after completing the course and internship.
