Government Theni Medical College was established in the year 2004 as Government Educational Institute to provide higher education to build a career in the field of Medical. The Theni Government Medical College is a Teaching Hospital for which the foundation stone was laid on 16 August 2002 by Chief Minister J. Jayalalitha.  The first hospital and college premises were inaugurated on 8 December 2004.  In 2006, the first 100 students were admitted to the MBBS program.
GTMC is spread in a huge 45.3 Acres campus having hostel facility within the perimeter.  The campus is located on the Kochi-Madurai-Tondi Point Rd, Kanavilakku, Theni, Tamil Nadu in the foothills of the western ghat serving the rural population of the states of Tamil Nadu and Kerala. The college is located 9 km from the district headquarters Theni, and 7 km from Aundipatty on the National Highway 85.

 
The Theni Government Medical College is affiliated to the government owned Tamilnadu Dr. MGR Medical University, Chennai. The College was accredited by the Medical Council of India (until 2020) and the National Medical Commission (since 2020).  Its administration is overseen by the Department of Health and Family Welfare, Government of Tamil Nadu.

 
Theni Medical College courses cover the MBBS program at the undergraduate level; MD and MS programs in various domains at the postgraduate level; and Diploma programs for paramedics, medical laboratory technologists and nurses.  The admissions to the UG and PG courses depend on the NEET and NEET-PG examination ranks, respectively.  The college has an annual intake of 100 seats in MBBS and 39 seats in 9 disciplines of Post-Graduate studies.  In 2022, the National Medical Commission sanctioned a Post-graduate course in Emergency Medicine at the college.

The highly qualified and experienced members of the college faculty have published many research papers in national and international journals and have organized/taken part in a number of Conferences, Workshops, Training programs, Seminars and CMEs.  

 
The GTMC premises includes excellent infrastructure including Faculty block, 600 bedded hospital, Casualty block, Administrative block, Examination hall, 5 Lecture Halls to accommodate around 700 in total (3x120, 1x150 and 1x250), Examination rooms, Demonstration rooms, Seminar halls and Departmental museums.  The state-of-the-art facilities include well-equipped Laboratories, Auditorium, Library (with Reading Room and E-Library with good internet connectivity), Canteens, Recreation halls, separate hostel facilities for Boys and Girls and Indoor & Outdoor facilities for Games and Sports, Post office, Cafeteria, Bank and Gas plant. The college has pre-clinical, para-clinical and clinical disciplines.  There are separate Quarters for Dean, RMO, ARMO, Professors, Asst. Professors, Residents, Nurses and staffs,.

Admission Procedure

Theni Government Medical College's admission process for MBBS and other courses is primarily based on NEET scores, followed by counseling and document verification. For undergraduate courses like MBBS, candidates need to qualify in the NEET-UG exam and participate in state-level counseling conducted by the Directorate of Medical Education, Tamil Nadu

Adimission process

• Appear for NEET‑UG and meet qualifying percentile (≥50% general; ≥40% SC/ST/OBC).

• Register separately for:

  • Tamil Nadu state counselling via Directorate of Medical Education, TN (85% state quota).

  • All India quota (AIQ) seats (15%) through MCC at mcc.nic.in 

• Participate in counselling rounds: Round 1, Round 2, Mop‑Up, Stray Vacancy as applicable 

• Fill college preferences, complete document verification, lock choices, receive allotment letter.

• Report to Theni GMCH within specified timeline with fees and original documents

Eligiblity

• Must qualify NEET‑UG conducted by NTA.

• 50% aggregate in Physics, Chemistry & Biology (40% for SC/ST/OBC; 45% for OBC-PwBD) in +2 level, with individually passing marks in PCB & English .

• Lower age limit: 17 years old as on 31 December of the admission year (born on or before 31 Dec 2007 for 2025) .

• Only recognized state boards (CBSE/ICSE/state); Open/private board students currently not eligible to sit for NEET‑UG .

• For Tamil Nadu state quota, nativity rules apply: candidate must be a native of Tamil Nadu or studied in TN continuously from class 6 to 12; valid nativity and community certificates required. Other‑state students must follow state‑specific rules and eligibility conditions .
