The Government of Tamil Nadu established the Thoothukudi Medical College on 16 August 2000.  It was initially located inside the campus of Fisheries College and Research Institute Department, Beach Road, but later shifted to the 3rd Mile, Thoothukudi during the year 2001.  Popularly known as TKMC, or Government Medical College, Thoothukudi, Government Medical College Thoothukudi is one of the leading Medical Colleges in South India with the College Motto being “Born to Serve”.

Thoothukudi Government Medical College is nestled in a huge 43 acre campus which is close to Thoothukudi Government Polytechnic campus in Kamaraj Nagar, 3rd Mile, Thoothukudi, Tamil Nadu. The college, the hospital and the hostels are all located within a radius of 1 kilometre. The college itself is located about 5 kilometres from the Railway Station and 3.2 kilometer from the Bus Stand.

The college is affiliated to The Tamil Nadu Dr. M.G.R. Medical University and is recognized by the National Medical Commission of India and World Health Organization.  The Counselling Conducted Authority for admission to  the college is The Directorate of Medical Education, Tamil Nadu

TKMC provides Graduation and Post Graduation courses in the field of Medicine and health care namely MBBS, MD, MS and DM programs. An annual in-take of 150 students admitted for MBBS.  The college also offers Diploma in Nursing from the Academic Year 2003-2004. DMLT Courses of two years duration and One Year Paramedical Certificate Course (Emergency Care Technician, Respiratory Therapy, Anaesthesia Technician, Theatre Technician and Orthopaedic Technician) were started from 2005-2006 with the total intake of 100 students and 150 students respectively.  Moreover in Nursing Assistant Course for both gents and ladies, 50 students are trained every year from the academic year 2009-2010.  Non-Clinical and Clinical departments too are functioning in this college.
