Tirunelveli Medical College, also known as TVMC, is a state-run premier medical institution located in the city of Tirunelveli, Tamil Nadu. The Government of Tamil Nadu established this Public Medical College in 1965, with the agreement of the University of Madras. A total of 75 students were admitted for the MBBS course for the academic year 1965-66 and they had their first year of study at the St Xaviers College for Men and Sarah Tucker College for Women.

The Tirunelveli Medical College, along with its primary teaching hospital within the perimeter, is spread over a huge 228.63 Acres campus at High Ground in Palayamkottai in the city of Tirunelveli, in the state of Tamil Nadu, India. The state-of-the-art college, hospital and hostels are all located within a radius of 1 km.  The college is located just about 7 km from the Railway Station and 5 km from the Bus Stand. It offers state of an art college with having hostel facility within the perimeter.

Tirunelveli Medical College is affiliated with The Tamil Nadu Dr M.G.R. Medical University, Chennai, and is recognized by the National Medical Commission (NMC) and is also enlisted in the World Health Organization (WHO) list of Medical Teaching Institutions.

The college and the hospital are funded and managed by the Government of Tamil Nadu. The College has also received PMSSY funding from the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare of the Central Government of India for setting up a Super Specialty Hospital in the campus. Since 2019, it has a functional 8 floor Super-speciality block located at St Thomas Rd, Athithanar Nagar, Maharaja Nagar,Tirunelveli.

Tirunelveli Medical College offers admission in MBBS, MD/MS, and DM/M.Ch.  The institute also offers admission in some Paramedical, B.Sc Nursing, Certificate and Diploma courses.  Besides MBBS and MD/MS, the college also offers PhD programs. The college is among the top 5 in terms of UG course (MBBS) offered across the state Tamil Nadu.

TVMC can accommodate 250 MBBS Undergraduate students, 140 MD/MS residents, and 23 DM/MCh students.

Admission to the MBBS course is made through the NEET UG.  For admission to MD/MS at Tirunelveli Medical College, an individual needs to clear the NEET PG cutoff.  Students seeking admission in Super-speciality programs like DM/M.Ch need to clear NEET SS.

Admission Procedure

The admission process for Tirunelveli Medical College involves qualifying in the NEET-UG exam for MBBS and NEET-PG for postgraduate courses. Candidates then need to register for state-level counseling conducted by the Directorate of Medical Education (DME)

• Qualify NEET‑UG.

• Register and apply for TN state counselling (Directorate of Medical Education, Tamil Nadu) if native.

• For AIQ seats, register with MCC online, using NEET AIR. 

• Fill preference form, attend counselling rounds.

• If allotted a seat, report to TVMC for document verification and fee payment

Eligiblity

• Must be an Indian citizen (OCIs eligible but no reservation benefits).

• Passed Class 12 (10+2) with Physics, Chemistry, Biology from recognized board.

• Qualified the NEET‑UG exam with minimum percentile:

  • 50% for General category, 40% for SC/ST/OBC, 45% for PH in General category. 

• For Tamil Nadu State Quota (85%): must be native of Tamil Nadu, documented through nativity proofs; All India Quota (15%) open to other states via MCC. 

• NEET score required to be within expected closing ranks around 1050–1100 AIR in 2025 for general category under state quota.

MD/MS / DM/M.CH- 3 Years Course

Admission Process

• For State Quota (50%): apply via PG‑MET online exam, followed by TN state counselling.

• For All India Quota (50%): qualify NEET‑PG and register in MCC central counselling

• 100% State quota: Apply via state application (where applicable — TN uses centralized process).

• Also eligible via NEET‑SS central MCC counselling

• Have completed one‑year internship (CRMI).
