Topiwala National Medical College And Bai Yamunabai Laxman Nair Charitable Hospital, Mumbai
About
In 1920, Bombay had only one medical college — Grant Medical College — managed entirely by the British, with no Indian doctors appointed. Amid the growing independence movement, local leaders sought to establish a fully Indian-funded institution.
Thus, on 4 September 1921, the National Medical College was founded through donations from the Tilak Swaraj Fund at Byculla, with the aim of training doctors to serve both hospitals and communities. Ayurveda was included in its curriculum, and it was initially affiliated to the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Bombay for the Licentiate Medical Practitioner (LMP) course.
The People’s Free Hospital was soon established nearby. Dr. A. L. Nair, a philanthropist and owner of Powell & Co., donated two acres of land and funds to build the Bai Yamunabai Laxman Nair Hospital in 1925. Later, Mr. M. N. (Topiwala) Desai contributed Rs. 5 lakhs, after which the college was renamed Topiwala National Medical College (TNMC).
In 1946, the Bombay Municipal Corporation took over the college and hospital, and the University of Bombay granted affiliation. Since then, TNMC and BYL Nair Hospital have become leading medical institutions, pioneering many firsts — including departments of Gastroenterology, Rheumatology, Dermatopathology, Speech and Audiology, Robotic Surgery, and services like Urodynamics and Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy.
Today, the campus spans 20 acres, houses a 1300-bed BYL Nair Charitable Hospital, and offers training in 25+ medical and allied disciplines, including 9 super-speciality courses.
