About College of Engineering, Guindy (CEG)

The College of Engineering, Guindy, also known as CEG, is Asia's oldest Technical Institution and is one of the Top Engineering colleges in the country.  Located in Chennai, CEG began as a School of Survey, later evolving into a college in 1859 under the Madras University.  In 1978, with the establishment of Anna University, CEG became one of its constituent colleges and remains affiliated with it to this day. College of Engineering Guindy is a public institute.

The Anna University, which is of the affiliated type, is a member of the Association of Indian Universities, the Association of Commonwealth Universities and Partner of UNESCO International Center for Engineering Education (UICEE). UGC has accredited Anna University with Five Star Status in 2002 which is the highest rating. With proven capabilities both in Academic and Research areas, Anna University was able to receive this honour for a period of five years for excellence in Technical Education.

Under Tamil Nadu State Government ownership, CEG covers around 223 acres of land amidst Green surroundings, right in the center of Chennai. The address is 12, Sardar Patel Rd, Anna University, Guindy, Chennai, Tamil Nadu.  It serves as the main campus of Anna University.

The College of Engineering, Guindy is part of Anna University, which has been accredited by the University Grants Commission (UGC) with five-star status. The UGC has also recommended that the four flagship campuses of Anna University, including CEG, be recognized as an Institute of Eminence.  However, the Government of Tamil Nadu rejected the offer, fearing a loss of reservations for candidates from backward castes.

CEG has been ranked by the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) many times. In 2023, CEG ranked 13th in the engineering category. College of Engineering

Guindy offers a variety of UG and PG Engineering courses with specializations such as Civil Engineering, Geo-Informatics, Industrial Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, and others including 10 UG (regular), 2 UG (Tamil Medium), 4 UG (self-supporting), 3 UG (part-time), 34 PG (regular), 20 PG (self-supporting) and 3 PG (part-time) courses.  Apart from a range ofB.E/B.Tech  courses under various specializations, the college also offers other PG Courses such as MBA, MCA, M.E., M.Sc. M.Tech., M.S. by Research and Ph.D. programs.  CEG Guindy has 16 Departments, 6 University Affiliated Centers, and 12 Research Centers where research programs are offered.  The admissions to these programs are on basis of Merit and relevant Entrance Exams. The accepted exams include TNEA Counselling, TANCET, GATE, etc.

College of Engineering, Guindy provides state-of-the-art facilities like well-stocked Libraries, Laboratories with all technical equipment, Computer Center, and well-maintained Hostels.  The college has 16 Hostels which provide accommodation to over 3,500 undergraduates and postgraduates.  Separate hostels are available for international students and exchange students.  Hostel messes are located in central halls.

Moreover many Student Centres have been placed in the college to address all the needs of students. These include the SC/ST cell, Center for Professional Development Education, Center for International Affairs, Health Centre, Center for Women Empowerment and the Student Affairs.

Admission Procedure: 

B.E./B.Tech programs, candidates need to have passed 10+2 with Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics (PCM) with a minimum of 45% marks (40% for reserved categories). For M.E./M.Tech programs, MBA and MCA Candidates need to appear for TANCET and go through the counselling process. M.Sc, Integrated M.Sc, and M.Phil Admission is through an entrance examination followed by a counselling round conducted by Anna University.

Admission Criteria

B.E./B.Tech - 4 Years Course

Admission Process:

• TNEA Application Form: Eligible candidates must first fill out the TNEA application form online, providing necessary details about their 10+2 qualifications and other required information.
  

Eligibility:

• Candidates must have passed the Higher Secondary Examination (10+2) or an equivalent examination from a recognized board with Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics as core subjects.
  
• A minimum of 50% aggregate marks in the 10+2 examination (for general category candidates) in Mathematics, Physics, and Chemistry.
  

M.E./M.Tech / M.B.A/M.C.A- 2 Years Course

Admission Process:

• Entrance Exam: Candidates must appear for and qualify in GATE or TANCET.
  
• TANCA Application: After the entrance exam, candidates must fill out the TANCA application form based on their entrance exam scores.
  
• Merit List: Authorities will prepare a merit list. Candidates whose names appear in the list are eligible for counseling.
  
• TANCA Counseling: Candidates must participate in the TANCA counseling process.
  
• College Preference: During counseling, candidates must select CEG Guindy as their preferred institution.
• Document Verification: Candidates will undergo document verification.
  
• Fee Payment: After verification, candidates must pay the required fees to confirm admission to CEG Guindy.

Eligibility:

• Educational Qualification: Candidates must hold a B.Tech/B.E. degree or its equivalent in a relevant engineering discipline from a recognized university.
  
• Minimum Marks: A minimum of 50% marks in the qualifying degree (45% for reserved categories).
  
• GATE Score: Admission is primarily based on the GATE (Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering) score. Candidates who do not have a valid GATE score may be considered based on merit or through an entrance exam conducted by the university.

Scholarship

Temenos Merit cum Means Scholarship: This scholarship is for students in the University Departments and is awarded based on merit and financial need. Beneficiaries are identified from the second year of their undergraduate studies and receive the scholarship for the next three academic years. 

Bank of Tokyo Mitsubishi (BTM) Scholarship: This scholarship is awarded based on merit and financial need. 

Student Welfare Endowment Award: This scholarship is also awarded based on merit and financial need. Dr. M.G.R & Thiru.

Quid E-Millath Endowment Award: This scholarship is for students with merit and financial need. 

1989 Alumni Trust Scholarship: This scholarship is for students based on their Class 12 marks and parental income. 

Anna Award: This award is for students from backward and minority communities, and is based on their Class 12 marks. 

National Scholarship Portal (NSP) Scholarships: These scholarships are for students who have applied through the National Scholarship Portal.

 Community Scholarship: This scholarship is for eligible undergraduate and postgraduate students with a parental income below a certain limit (e.g., 2 lakhs per annum).

 AICTE GATE Stipend: This scholarship is for students who have qualified in the GATE exam. 

AICTE Scholarship Schemes: There are various other scholarship schemes offered by AICTE. 

National Fellowship for ST: This scholarship is for students belonging to the Scheduled Tribes. 

First Graduate Concession: This concession is for students who are the first in their family to graduate.

Hostal

The CEG Hostels is established for the welfare of the students and is under the direct control of the Institution. CEG Hostels comprises of 22 blocks (located at CEG Campus), out of which boys are accommodated in 14 Blocks and Girls in 8 Blocks. All the blocks are named as the Tamil flowers name in India. In addition to this, all the hostel blocks provide the green environment, surrounded by the trees where it provides the peaceful and friendly environment to the students, along with the peaceful chirping of birds. The overall supervision of the CEG hostel management consists of Warden, Executive warden and Deputy wardens who are the faculty members of the College of Engineering Guindy across various departments.

Transport

Anna University in Chennai provides transport facilities for its students and staff through its Logistics Centre. This center manages a fleet of vehicles and also arranges for outsourced transportation to support various university activities, including student industrial visits, NSS programs, and academic events like conferences.
