Vellalar College for Women traces its roots to the year 1970 when the farsighted visionaries of the soil led a mission to educate and empower the first generation women scholars of the locale, specifically those from rural, underprivileged sections of the society to become leaders and contributors to every sector of the society. For more than four and half decades, the institution has passed many groundbreaking milestones and forged benchmarking traditions eventually evolving into the eye of conscience of the society. With a sizeable students’ strength of 6,000 students in the under-graduate and the post-graduate programmes in the Aided and the Unaided sections, the institution espouses the cause of ‘Education for Life’ enabling every graduating scholar to find her niche and to strike a successful balance between academic life and otherwise.           Taking a lead in creating a whole new pedagogy, digital content as a substitute for large-format lectures is developed and delivered by the institution through its collaboration with Spoken Tutorials, IIT Bombay, an initiative of NMEICT, MHRD, GoI. This academic alliance has launched Vellalar College for Women, Erode, as the Nodal Resource Centre (NRC) of Spoken Tutorials, IIT Bombay, in Erode region.

      A promising and potential space for research culture is woven into the academic landscape of the institution which is furthered by the financial assistance sanctioned under FIST programme by the Ministry of Science and Technology, Department of Science and Technology, R & D Division, GoI to strengthen the research and teaching facilities in all science departments of the college. Furthermore, under Star College Scheme, the Ministry of Science and Technology, Department of Biotechnology, GoI, has accorded substantial funds to bolster and intensify the Life Science and Biotechnology education and training. The institution also boasts a sizeable number of Minor and Major Research Projects completed/underway. The user-friendly library as a vast repertoire of resource and laboratories for extensive research pursuits, the availability of in-house research supervision and the back up given to the staff and the students to carry on research pursuits add to the research ecosystem of the institution.

       Three Peer-reviewed biannual multidisciplinary research journals (Both online and print versions with DOI, ISBN & ISSN) are released from the portals of the institution which can be accessed online in the digital repository www.i-scholar.in.

        The calibrated efforts were taken by the Career Guidance and Placement Cell of the institution and the industry-academia interface make the graduates industry-ready the proof of which is the significant number of alumni working with good standing in public and well-reputed organizations/corporate sectors.

Eligibility for admission :

• U.G.Courses – A pass in Higher Secondary or an equivalent examination recognised by the Bharathiar University,Coimbatore.

• Admission is subject to verification of mark sheets and certificates issued by the Director of Government Examinations and if the mark sheet is found to be bogus, admission is liable for cancellation, besides criminal action will be taken

• The upper age limit for admission to the U.G. courses will be 21 Years as on 1st July of that academic year. For SC/ST/MBC/DNC/BC candidates, the age limit is relaxed by 3 years. For other communities, the Principal can relax upto 3 years based on merit. A relaxation of 5 years is permitted for differently abled persons.

• PG Courses – A candidate who has passed the Degree Examination as main subject of study of any University accepted by the syndicate of the Bharathiar University, Coimbatore or as equivalent thereto shall be eligible for admission to the PG Courses.

Reservation and Selection procedures :

• The Admission shall be made purely on the basis of Merit subject to the rule of reservation of the Government of Tamil Nadu.

• 31% for Open Competition (OC)

• 26.5% for Backward Classes (BC) other than BC Muslims and 3.5% for Backward Classes Muslims.

• 20% for Most Backward classes (MBC) and Denotified Communities (DNC)

• 15% for Scheduled Castes (SC), and 3% for Arunthathiyars (SCA)

• 1% for Scheduled Tribes (ST)

• Out of the above quota, 3 out of 100 vacancies shall be reserved for physically challenged candidates belonging to each category separately.

• 6 seats in Under Graduate courses & 2 seats in Post Graduate courses shall be reserved for the children of Ex-Servicemen of Tamil Nadu origin

• 3% of seats in Under Graduate Courses and 2% of seats in PG Courses as per government order shall be reserved under sports quota for students who have represented the district level and above with due submission of certificates.

Selection for Admission :

The selection list will be out of 400 marks comprising a subject component of 400 for all the U.G. Degree courses. For B.A., English Literature the selection list will be on the basis of marks secured in Part-II English.

Selected candidates will be intimated by post and the same list will be displayed in the college notice board. Selected candidates shall join the college on the date specified therein in the admission card, after the interview with the Principal. Request for postponement of joining will not be entertained. All admissions made are provisional, subject to the approval of Bharathiar University. The college has the right to cancel the admission on a later date, if any of the documents is found to be false or if the qualification of the candidate admitted is not approved by Bharathiar University, Coimbatore.

Certificates once submitted to the college will not be returned under any circumstances. Students are advised to take sufficient number of photocopies of their original certificates before submitting them to the college.

To prevent ragging in our college, an anti-ragging committee has been formed with Principal and senior faculty members. If any student is found guilty of ragging, she is liable for punishment according to clause 9.1 of UGC regulations, without prejudice to any other criminal action, that may be taken against her under any penal law or any law for the time being in force.

Library
The Library, the largest block in the ground floor is very spacious and measures 9409.25 sq.ft. with adequate reading facilities for 230 users at a time. It has a comprehensive collection of books and periodicals, both Indian and Foreign to meet the demands of the students from undergraduate to research level. Presently library has a collection of over 81,476 volumes of books on different disciplines and also subscribes about 110 periodicals. The Library is equipped with bar-code technology for computerized circulation system since 2005. The digital library has 23 computer systems with internet and printing facilities.

The Hostel
Hostel provides a feeling of Home-Away-From-Home to the students. It provides a secure, comfortable and healthy environment for all the inmates. The hostel accommodation comprises of rooms which are well furnished, hygienic and have ultra modern amenities. The rooms are furnished with cots, shelves, reading table and chairs. The hostel premises has a common reading room and TV room and is Wi-Fi enabled. A modern central kitchen operates in the campus. Pure vegetarian food prepared under hygienic conditions and is served in the student dining halls. Dry cleaning services, the uninterrupted power supply, 24×7 medical care, RO plants, hot water supply, telephone facility, indoor games – all these vouch for the healthy and comfy stay of the residents. Security and surveillance are ensured by CCTV cameras and round the clock securities.

The sports department ensures the importance of living a healthy life style and takes keen interest in imparting to students sporting skills and knowledge that remain with them throughout their lives. It is through games and sports that character is moulded and qualities like leadership, dedication and integrity are generated through these activities.

To lead a healthier lifestyle, the college has a well- equipped gym to cater to the needs of staff and students to be utilized from 6 am to 6 pm. As a part of curriculum, physical activities like Yoga, Swimming, Silambam, Taekwondo, Karate, Boxing, Traditional sports and General conditioning workouts are designed and offered to cater to the individual need and interest of students.

All the students are trained by professionals, who assist them in reaching the goals.
