Vellore Institute of Technlogy (VIT) was established in the year 1984 under Section 3 of the University Grants Commission (UGC) Act, 1956, as a self-financing institution called the Vellore Engineering College. The Union Ministry of Human Resources Development conferred University status on Vellore Engineering College in 2001.  VIT was established with the aim of providing quality higher education on par with international standards.   It persistently seeks and adopts innovative methods to improve the quality of higher education on a consistent basis.

VIT, Vellore is headed by its founder and Chancellor, Dr. G. Viswanathan, a former Parliamentarian and Minister in the Tamil Nadu Government. In recognition of his service to India in offering world class education, he was conferred an honorary doctorate by the West Virginia University, USA. Mr.Sankar Viswanathan, Dr.Sekar Viswanathan and Dr.G.V. Selvam are the Vice-Presidents; Dr. Rambabu Kodali is the Vice-Chancellor and Dr. Partha Sharathi Mallick is the Pro-Vice Chancellor I/C.

Vellore Institute of Technology (VIT) is a private research deemed university located in Katpadi in Vellore, Tamil Nadu, India.

The institution offers 66 Undergraduate, 58 Postgraduate, 15 Integrated, 2 Research and 2 M.Tech Industrial Programmes.  It has campuses in Vellore and Chennai and sister universities in Amaravati, Bhopal and Bengaluru.  VIT consolidated its disciplines into 20 Schools of Study with the addition of the VIT Law School at its Chennai campus.  VIT implements the Fully Flexible Credit System (FFCS) which gives the students to choose and make their own timetables by choosing the subjects and the faculties for the next semester. 33 Professors of VIT are among the top 2% scientists of the world as shown in a survey conducted by Stanford University, USA in 2021.

The National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) by the MoE ranked VIT 18 overall in India in 2022, 9 among universities and 12 among Engineering institutes. The Government of India has recognized VIT as one of the Institutions of Eminence (IoE).

VIT was ranked first among private engineering colleges in India by Outlook India in 2022.  India Today ranked it 20 among engineering colleges in 2020. The VIT Business School was ranked 55 among management schools in India by NIRF in 2020.

VIT has been accredited with A++ grade by NAAC (National Accreditation and Assessment Council), it has completed 4 cycles of accreditation and is going for the 5th cycle.  It is preparing for the third round of accreditation by the NBA (National Board of Accreditation).  It is accredited by the International accrediting agencies ABET (Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology).  ACBSP (Accreditation Council for Business Schools and Programs) has accredited the VIT Business School.  ACCA (Association of Chartered Certified Accountants) has accredited the BBA program.

Admission Criteria

B.Tech Admission 2025

VIT Vellore offers 4-year B.Tech program in 10 specializations, namely, Computer Science & Engineering, Computer Science & Business Systems, Biotechnology, Electrical & Electronics Engineering, Data Sciences, Electronics & Communication Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, etc. The major specializations, such as Computer Science, Mechanical, and Electronics & Communications, include further specializations. VIT Vellore Admission to B.Tech courses is based on VITEEE score/rank.

B.Tech Eligibility Criteria

• Candidates applying for the B.Tech program must check the eligibility criteria set by the authority:
  
• Candidate must be an Indian National / NRI/ PIO/ OCI holder.
  
• Must have passed 10+2
  
• Minimum marks obtained must be 60% in Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, or Biology (PCM/ PCB) in class 12 or equivalent exam.
  
• Born on or after July 1, 2000.

B.Arch & B.Des Admission 2025

VIT Vellore offers full-time B.Arch and B.Des courses in various disciplines. 10+2 with PCM/B with 60% marks in aggregate is the minimum eligibility criteria for admission. VIT Vellore offers a B.Arch program through the School of Architecture and a B.Des program through the School of Design. VIT Vellore Admission to B.Des and B.Arch is based on UCEED and NATA scores, respectively.

B.Arch & B.Des Eligibility Criteria

• B.Arch: 10+2 examination with Mathematics as a subject and minimum 60% marks (50% for SC/ST/ Jammu & Kashmir and North-Eastern states of Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Sikkim, and Tripura).
  
• B.Des: Candidates must have passed 10+2 with 60% marks in aggregate.
• BA 10+2 from a recognized board

M.Tech & MCA Admission 2025

VIT Vellore also offers M.Tech, MCA, and M.Tech by Research programs. The minimum eligibility requirement is a Bachelor’s degree in the related discipline with at least 60% marks in aggregate. Selection of candidates for these courses is based on entrance exams, followed by an interview or counselling.

• M.Tech BE/ B.Tech or Bachelor’s degree in the related discipline or M.Sc in the relevant discipline with 60% marks in aggregate.
  
• Integrated M.Tech 10+2 (PCM) with 70% marks in aggregate
  
• M.Tech by Research Master’s degree in Engineering or M.Sc. or MCA (Mathematics & Physics) with at least 60% marks in aggregate, OR AMIE (Part A and Part B).
  
• MCA Students must have passed B.Sc (IT/CS) or BCA with Mathematics at 10+2 or a Graduation degree with 60% marks in aggregate.

Facilities Offered @ Vellore Institute of Technology, Vellore

The Department of Physical Education was set up in the year 1984. The Department of Physical education is located in VIT Shopping Complex. This complex has a magnificent air conditioned gymnasium and Snooker Hall. A separate fitness centre for men and women has also been established in the respective Hostels. A swimming pool of international dimension is also available in the campus.

The clubs here at VIT suits everyone’s enthusiasms and fits everyone on campus. VIT is enhanced with many such clubs. These clubs help students cultivate leadership and team-building skills. These clubs are responsible for the never-ending stream of liveliness and events that happen in our college. Name technical, artistic, research-oriented or public speaking, everything and everyone is satisfied here.

It is Sri Sakthi Amma’s divine vision which inspired the establishment of Sri Narayani Hospital & Research Centre. The institution is situated in Thirumalaikodi, a tiny hamlet about 9 kilometres from Vellore.Its prime objective since inception is to provide quality medical service to the less privileged rural population,at a level on par with hospitals of metropolitan cities.The Primary health centre is located at Dr.A.L.Mudaliar Block within VIT, Vellore Campus. It has a reception, Pharmacy, 2 Out Patient consultation rooms (one male and one female), Emergency room with 3 beds, Dressing/Suturing room situated at ground floor. 5 Specialist consultation rooms, 1 duty doctor room, 2 male & 2 female wards with 20 In-patient beds, Physiotherapy room, Lab & X-Ray situated at first floor.

VIT is aiming to reduce the in-house energy consumption by installing Solar PV panels in all the building roof tops in the campus for the capacity of 2.813 kWp. Solar PV panels generating 4,00,000 units of power per month on average.
