Hospital Facilities
The Veterinary College Teaching Hospital in Namakkal was earlier run by the Tamil Nadu Governments Directorate of Animal Husbandry. In 1989, it was taken over by the Veterinary College and Research Institute, Namakkal, to give practical training to veterinary students. To improve services for animals and offer better hands-on training to students, a separate Clinics Department was set up in 1994. Staff from different clinical fields like Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Clinical Medicine, and Surgery were assigned to this department.
The hospital, located on Trichy Road, first operated from a small old asbestos shed. Later, special units for Medicine, Surgery, and Gynaecology and Obstetrics were created for both large and small animals to support teaching and serve the public better.
Over time, permanent buildings were constructed. These include a clinical lab, emergency unit, a large animal ward with a room for owners, a modern small animal operation theatre, referral clinics for all types of animals, a lecture hall with audiovisual tools, and a large animal operation theatre with shadowless lights and a hydraulic table.
The hospital now offers many advanced diagnostic and treatment services such as endoscopy, ultrasound scanning, ECG, diathermy, cryosurgery, dental cleaning, surgeries for both small and large animals, contrast Xrays, physiotherapy, reproductive ultrasound for large animals, infertility treatment, and inhalation anesthesia. A dedicated Emergency and Critical Care Unit also works 24x7 all through the year.
Animal Feed Analytical and Quality Assurance Laboratory AFAQAL
AFAQAL was started on 14th April 1994 on the hospital campus to check the quality of feed given to poultry and livestock. It tests feed samples from across India for nutrients and harmful substances like mycotoxins, at a low cost. Over time, the number of tests done increased from 12 to 50 to help farmers. In 2010, the lab was moved to a new building at the Veterinary College and Research Institute campus. A new project to upgrade and modernize AFAQAL was approved with funding of 4.36 crores by the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority APEDA, Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Government of India. Work on this project is currently ongoing.
The college also offers library, centralized computer centre and hostel facilities for men and women students separately.
