About
Veterinary College and Research Institute in Tirunelveli was started as the third college under TANUVAS (Tamil Nadu Veterinary and Animal Sciences University). It was established through a Government Order by the Animal Husbandry, Dairying, and Fisheries Department in August 2011. The college was set up at Ramayanpatti in Tirunelveli on 139.21 acres of land with an initial budget of Rs. 12.59 crores. It was created to support farmers in the southern drought-prone districts of Tamil Nadu who mainly rely on dairy, sheep, and goat farming. The college aims to improve livestock production, especially small ruminants like goats and sheep. Later, another Government Order approved teaching and non-teaching staff posts and gave funds for construction, equipment, and other infrastructure
Departments :
To begin the degree course, seven departments were started in 2012. These were: Veterinary Anatomy, Veterinary Physiology and Biochemistry, Animal Genetics and Breeding, Animal Nutrition, Livestock Production and Management, Teaching Veterinary Clinical Complex, Instructional Livestock Farm Complex. In the same year, the Library Science and Bio-engineering departments were also started. Over the next 4 years, departments added were, Veterinary Microbiology, Veterinary Pathology, Veterinary Parasitology, Veterinary Pharmacology & Toxicology, Veterinary Public Health, Livestock Products Technology, Veterinary and Animal Husbandry Extension Education, Veterinary Medicine, Veterinary Surgery and Radiology, Veterinary Obstetrics and Gynaecology.
Today, there are 19 departments functioning on the Ramayanpatti campus.
Veterinary Council of India (VCI) Inspection
A team from the Veterinary Council of India (VCI), New Delhi, visited the college from 25th to 27th June 2012 to check the available facilities. Approval was given to start the first-year B.V.Sc. & A.H. course. VCI also inspected and approved Second year to Fifth Year facilities. Approval was granted for each year accordingly.
Student Strength
After receiving VCI approval in 2012, the college admitted 40 students each year from 2012-13 to 2014-15 for the B.V.Sc. & A.H. course. From 2015-16 onwards, 60 students have been admitted every year.
Hostel Facilities
\Separate hostels are available for boys and girls. A mess facility has been running from the beginning to provide healthy meals at affordable rates. One warden and four deputy wardens (including two lady deputy wardens) are appointed to look after hostel activities.
