About
To increase skilled professionals and help poultry farmers, a second veterinary college was started at Namakkal on 14th June 1985. It began as part of the Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, Coimbatore. Later, on 20th September 1989, it became part of Indias first veterinary university – the Tamil Nadu Veterinary and Animal Sciences University TANUVAS. In the beginning, from 1985 to 1990, the college functioned in the classrooms of Government Higher Secondary School, Namakkal.
On 10th May 1990, the college shifted to its own campus spread over 500.18 acres at Ladduvadi village, about 7 km south of Namakkal on the way to Mohanur.
The Veterinary College and Research Institute, Namakkal, received accreditation from ICAR, New Delhi in 2001. It also received the Udyog Excellence Award for outstanding contributions to economic and social development from the International Institute of Education and Management, New Delhi. Staff members have received best teacher awards from ICAR and TANUVAS. The college was also awarded ISO 9001 2000 certification from 2004 to 2006.
The college celebrated its Silver Jubilee in 2009–10. As part of the celebrations, 17 events such as seminars, symposia, conferences, workshops, training programs, and exhibitions were conducted to showcase the colleges progress. A silver jubilee memorial pillar was installed, and the foundation stone for a new memorial building was laid.

Up to now, 1507 students have successfully completed their BVSc and AH degree across 23 graduating batches. Over the years, various academic formats have been used the trimester system between 1985 and 1990, the semester system from 1991 to 2000, and the Veterinary Council of India VCI syllabus from 2001 to 2008. Postgraduate and doctoral studies follow the curriculum guidelines of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research ICAR.
The Master of Veterinary Science MVSc course began on 25th October 1993 in six initial departments Animal Nutrition, Animal Genetics, Parasitology, Pathology, Poultry Science, and Veterinary Microbiology. For academic purposes, the college has seven modern classrooms equipped for instruction. Six of these are situated within the main campus, and one is at the Teaching Veterinary Hospital located in Namakkal town. These classrooms feature modern teaching tools such as LCD projectors, slide projectors, overhead projectors, and sound systems to support effective learning.
The Veterinary College Teaching Hospital in Namakkal was earlier run by the Tamil Nadu Governments Directorate of Animal Husbandry. In 1989, it was taken over by the Veterinary College and Research Institute, Namakkal, to give practical training to veterinary students. To improve services for animals and offer better hands-on training to students, a separate Clinics Department was set up in 1994. Staff from different clinical fields like Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Clinical Medicine, and Surgery were assigned to this department.
The hospital, located on Trichy Road, first operated from a small old asbestos shed. Later, special units for Medicine, Surgery, and Gynaecology and Obstetrics were created for both large and small animals to support teaching and serve the public better.
Over time, permanent buildings were constructed. These include a clinical lab, emergency unit, a large animal ward with a room for owners, a modern small animal operation theatre, referral clinics for all types of animals, a lecture hall with audiovisual tools, and a large animal operation theatre with shadowless lights and a hydraulic table.
The hospital now offers many advanced diagnostic and treatment services such as endoscopy, ultrasound scanning, ECG, diathermy, cryosurgery, dental cleaning, surgeries for both small and large animals, contrast Xrays, physiotherapy, reproductive ultrasound for large animals, infertility treatment, and inhalation anesthesia. A dedicated Emergency and Critical Care Unit also works 24x7 all through the year.
AFAQAL was started on 14th April 1994 on the hospital campus to check the quality of feed given to poultry and livestock. It tests feed samples from across India for nutrients and harmful substances like mycotoxins, at a low cost. Over time, the number of tests done increased from 12 to 50 to help farmers. In 2010, the lab was moved to a new building at the Veterinary College and Research Institute campus. A new project to upgrade and modernize AFAQAL was approved with funding of 4.36 crores by the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority APEDA, Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Government of India. Work on this project is currently ongoing.
The Veterinary College and Research Institute, Namakkal provides excellent training and placement support to its students. Practical training is given high importance, and students are exposed to real-life clinical cases, livestock farms, and laboratory work during their studies. Internships and field visits are organized regularly to help students gain hands-on experience in animal care, treatment, and management.
The college also conducts special training programs, workshops, and skill development sessions to prepare students for careers in veterinary practice, government services, research, teaching, and the animal healthcare industry. Final year students undergo a compulsory internship program which includes working in veterinary hospitals, farms, and outreach centres.
For placements, the college has a dedicated placement cell that guides students in career planning and job opportunities. It maintains links with veterinary pharmaceutical companies, poultry farms, dairy industries, animal nutrition firms, and government departments. Through campus interviews and recruitment drives, many students are placed in reputed organizations, government veterinary services, and private veterinary practices across the country.
