GATE 2026
Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) is a national-level examination conducted jointly by the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) and the 23 Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs).
IIT Guwahati is the organizing institute for GATE 2026.
GATE 2026 assesses candidates’ understanding of undergraduate-level subjects in engineering, science, and technology. The examination serves as a gateway for admission to M.Tech and PhD programmes in premier institutions and is also used for recruitment by Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs).
The question paper will include Multiple Choice Questions (MCQ) with negative marking (1/3 mark deducted for 1-mark questions and 2/3 mark deducted for 2-mark questions), Multiple Select Questions (MSQ) without negative marking, and Numerical Answer Type (NAT) questions without negative marking.
GATE 2026 will be conducted as a Computer-Based Test (CBT) across 30 test papers, including the newly introduced sectional paper on Energy Science in Engineering Sciences.
The number of applicants for GATE 2026 is expected to exceed 10 lakh candidates. However, this projection is based on previous trends and is not official.
According to the released schedule, higher participation is anticipated in the Computer Science (CS) and Civil Engineering (CE) papers, as these two papers are scheduled in multiple shifts due to high demand.

|---|---|
|
Category-wise Cutoff |
GATE cutoff marks are released separately for different categories such as General, OBC-NCL/EWS, and SC/ST/PwD. Generally, OBC-NCL/EWS cutoff is 90% of General cutoff, and SC/ST/PwD cutoff is 2/3rd (≈66%) of General cutoff (as per standard trend). |
|
Branch-wise Cutoff |
Each paper (branch) has a separate qualifying cutoff based on its difficulty level and number of candidates. Popular papers like CSE, CE, EE, and ME usually have higher cutoffs due to high competition. |
|
Previous Year Cutoff |
Previous year cutoffs help candidates estimate trends and competition level. Cutoff varies annually depending on exam difficulty and participation. Candidates are advised to refer to official past cutoff data for accurate comparison. |
|
Factors Affecting Cutoff |
• Number of candidates appearing • Difficulty level of the exam • Total number of seats available • Performance of candidates • Category-wise reservation norms |
