CGPA Conversion Rules (If Applicable)

  • GATE itself does not mandate CGPA-to-percentage conversion for eligibility.

  • During admissions (IITs/NITs), candidates may be required to convert CGPA into percentage as per their university norms.

  • Conversion must follow the official formula provided by the respective university/institution.

Category-Based Relaxation (If Any)

  • Since GATE does not require minimum qualifying marks for eligibility, there is no separate relaxation at the application stage.

  • However, during admissions:

    • Reserved category candidates (SC/ST/PwD/OBC-NCL/EWS) may receive relaxation in minimum qualifying marks as per institute rules.

    • Cutoff marks for qualification in GATE are also released category-wise.

Candidates should remember that GATE eligibility and institute admission eligibility are different, and they must satisfy both when applying for M.Tech/PhD or PSU recruitment.

GATE 2026 - Age Limit Eligibility

The Age Limit criterion for GATE 2026 is straightforward and flexible. Unlike many competitive examinations, GATE does not impose any minimum or maximum age restriction for candidates appearing in the exam. However, while there is no age bar for taking the GATE exam, certain Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs) that recruit through GATE scores may have their own age eligibility conditions.

Confirmation: No Upper Age Limit

  • There is no minimum age limit to apply for GATE 2026.

  • There is no upper age limit to appear for the examination.

  • Candidates of any age can apply, provided they meet the educational qualification criteria.

PSU-Specific Age Restrictions

  • Although GATE has no age restriction, individual PSUs may prescribe upper age limits for recruitment.

  • Age limits for PSUs typically vary based on:

    • Category (General / OBC / SC / ST / PwD)

    • Post or job role

    • Government norms

  • Age relaxation is often provided for reserved categories as per government rules.

Candidates planning to apply for PSU jobs through GATE should carefully check the specific recruitment notification issued by the respective PSU.

GATE 2026 - Nationality Criteria Eligibility

The Nationality Criteria for GATE 2026 define who is eligible to apply based on citizenship status. GATE is not restricted only to Indian nationals; eligible candidates from foreign countries can also apply, provided they meet the prescribed academic qualifications. However, admission policies in IITs, NITs, or PSU recruitment may vary depending on nationality.

Indian Nationals

  • Indian citizens are fully eligible to apply for GATE 2026.

  • They must meet the required educational qualification and year-of-study criteria.

  • There are no additional nationality-related restrictions for Indian applicants.

Foreign Nationals Eligibility

  • Candidates from foreign countries are also eligible to apply for GATE 2026.

  • They must satisfy the same educational qualification criteria as Indian candidates.

  • Admission procedures for foreign nationals may differ based on institute rules.

OCI / PIO Candidates (If Applicable)

  • Overseas Citizens of India (OCI) and Persons of Indian Origin (PIO) are generally eligible to apply.

  • They must fulfill the academic qualification requirements.

  • Admission policies and reservation benefits may differ compared to Indian nationals.

GATE 2026 - Number of Attempts Eligibility

The Number of Attempts section clarifies how many times a candidate can appear for GATE and how long a GATE score remains valid. One of the advantages of GATE is that there is no restriction on the number of attempts, allowing candidates to improve their performance in subsequent years. However, the validity of the GATE score is limited and must be considered while planning admissions or PSU applications.

Is There Any Restriction on Number of Attempts?

  • There is no limit on the number of attempts for GATE.

  • Candidates can appear for the exam multiple times.

  • There is no age-based restriction on attempts.

Validity of Previous GATE Score

  • A GATE score is valid for three years from the date of result declaration.

  • The score can be used for M.Tech/PhD admissions during its validity period.

  • PSU recruitment validity depends on individual PSU notifications and may vary.

  • After three years, the score expires and cannot be used for admission.

GATE 2026 - Documents Required for Eligibility Proof

To confirm eligibility during admission or counselling, candidates must produce valid academic and category-related documents. While uploading documents during the application stage is important, original certificates are typically verified at the time of admission (IITs/NITs/PSUs). Failure to provide proper documentation may lead to cancellation of candidature.

Degree Certificate / Provisional Certificate

  • Final Degree Certificate (if the course is completed), or

  • Provisional Certificate issued by the institution.

  • Final-year candidates may be required to submit a course completion certificate during admission.

Mark Sheets

  • Semester-wise or consolidated mark sheets of the qualifying degree.

  • Must clearly indicate passing status and academic performance.

  • CGPA-to-percentage conversion (if required) should follow university norms.

Category Certificate (If Applicable)

  • SC/ST/OBC-NCL/EWS certificate (as per Government of India format).

  • Must be valid and issued by a competent authority.

  • OBC-NCL/EWS certificates should meet the latest validity requirements mentioned in official notifications.

PwD Certificate (If Applicable)

  • Valid disability certificate issued by a competent medical authority.

  • Must comply with Government of India guidelines.

  • Required for availing reservation or relaxation benefits.

GATE 2026 -  Special Cases Eligibility

Backlog Candidates

  • Candidates with pending backlogs are generally allowed to apply for GATE.

  • However, they must clear all required subjects within the timeline specified by the admitting institute.

  • Failure to clear backlogs before admission may result in cancellation of candidature.

Result Awaited Candidates

  • Candidates whose final year results are awaited can apply for GATE.

  • They must provide valid proof of course completion within the stipulated deadline during admission.

  • Provisional certificates may be required at the time of counselling.

Candidates from Equivalent Qualifications

  • Candidates holding degrees equivalent to B.E./B.Tech/B.Sc (Research)/B.S. or relevant Master’s degrees are eligible, subject to recognition by competent authorities.

  • In case of foreign or unconventional qualifications, equivalence proof may be required.

  • Final acceptance depends on institute-specific verification during admission.

Candidates in special categories should carefully read official notifications and keep supporting documents ready to avoid issues during verification.

GATE 2026 - Eligibility for Dual Paper Option

GATE 2026 allows candidates to appear for either one or two papers, subject to specific combination rules defined in the official brochure. The option to choose two papers provides flexibility for candidates who have interdisciplinary interests or eligibility across multiple streams. However, the second paper must be selected from the approved combinations list, and not all paper combinations are permitted.

Rules for Appearing in Two Papers

  • A candidate can opt for a maximum of two papers in GATE 2026.

  • The second paper must be chosen during the application process.

  • Both papers will be conducted in separate sessions as per the official exam schedule.

  • Additional application fee applies for selecting a second paper.

Paper Combination Restrictions

  • The second paper must be selected only from the approved combination list provided in the official GATE brochure.

  • Not all papers can be combined with each other.

  • Certain interdisciplinary papers (like Data Science & AI, Engineering Sciences, etc.) may have broader combination options.

  • Candidates cannot request a change in paper combination after the correction window closes.

Uploading Wrong Certificates

  • Upload clear and correct documents in the prescribed format and size.

  • Ensure category or PwD certificates are in the correct Government of India format (if applicable).

  • Blurred or incorrect uploads may require correction and additional fees.

Assuming PSU Eligibility = GATE Eligibility

  • GATE eligibility criteria and PSU recruitment eligibility are different.

  • Even if you are eligible to write GATE, you may not meet PSU-specific requirements (such as age limit or minimum percentage).

  • Always verify PSU notification separately before applying.

  •  M.Tech admissions depend on relevant GATE paper score.

  •  PSUs specify eligible GATE paper codes in recruitment notifications.

  •  Syllabus differs significantly between papers.

  •  Paper change after submission may require correction fee.

  •  Your rank and competition depend on the chosen discipline.

Tip: Choose the paper that aligns with:

  • Your qualifying degree

  • Your preparation strength

  • Your target college/PSU

GATE   2026 - Exam City Selection

The GATE exam is conducted across multiple cities in India (and limited international centres in some years). While filling the application form on the GOAPS portal, candidates must carefully choose their preferred exam cities based on convenience and availability.

How Many Cities Can Be Selected?

  • Candidates are generally allowed to select multiple exam cities in order of preference (usually 3 choices).

  • All selected cities must belong to the same zone.

  • The final allotment is based on availability and administrative considerations.

It is advisable to choose cities you can easily travel to, in case your first preference is unavailable.

Zonal System Explanation

GATE exam centres are divided into zones, and each zone is managed by one organizing institute (IIT or IISc). For example, GATE 2026 is organized by IIT Guwahati, which manages its allotted zone.

  • Each zone includes multiple states and cities.

  • Candidates must choose exam cities within a single zone only.

  • The zonal system helps manage logistics and centre allocation efficiently.

The official brochure provides a complete list of zone-wise exam cities.

City Change Policy

  • Candidates may be allowed to modify exam city preference during the application correction window.

  • A correction fee may be applicable.

  • City change requests are subject to seat availability.

  • After the correction window closes, no further changes are allowed.

Last-minute requests for change are not entertained.

What If Preferred City Is Unavailable?

If your selected city becomes unavailable:

  • The organizing institute may allot a nearby city within the same zone.

  • The final decision on city allocation rests with the GATE authorities.

  • Requests for specific centres are not guaranteed.

  • Candidates cannot demand a particular city once allotment is done.

The allotted exam city will be clearly mentioned on the Admit Card.

Important Tips

  • Choose cities carefully while filling the form.

  • Avoid selecting cities far from your residence unless necessary.

  • Apply early to increase chances of getting preferred city.

  • Regularly check official updates.

GATE 2026 - Common Mistakes to Avoid Application Form

While filling out the GATE application form on the GOAPS portal, many candidates make small errors that later create major issues such as application rejection, defect status, or difficulty during admit card verification. Below are the most common mistakes you should clearly highlight on your website:

Name Mismatch with ID Proof

  • Entering a name different from the one on the uploaded photo ID.

  • Using initials in the form but full name in ID (or vice versa).

  • Spelling mistakes in name or parent’s name.

Tip: Enter your name exactly as printed on your valid photo ID.

Wrong Paper Selection

  • Choosing a paper not related to your qualifying degree.

  • Selecting an incorrect second paper (not in allowed combination list).

  • Not checking PSU/college eligibility before choosing the paper.

Tip: Verify syllabus, eligibility, and future goals before selecting your paper(s).

Incorrect Category Selection

  • Selecting OBC/SC/ST/EWS without valid certificate.

  • Uploading outdated or incorrect certificate format.

Exam Pattern

GATE: This exam is one of the most prestigious examinations in India, and the purpose of GATE Exam is intended to assess students' proficiency in fields such as Engineering and Science

GATE 2026 – Exam Pattern

The Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) 2026 is a national-level computer-based examination conducted for admission to MTech, PhD programs and recruitment in Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs). The exam is held in online (CBT) mode and has a duration of 3 hours. The total paper carries 100 marks with 65 questions divided into three sections: General Aptitude (15 marks), Engineering Mathematics (15 marks for most engineering papers), and Core Subject/Technical Section (70 marks). The question types include MCQs (Multiple Choice Questions), MSQs (Multiple Select Questions), and NAT (Numerical Answer Type). Negative marking applies only to MCQs (1/3-mark deduction for 1-mark questions and 2/3-mark deduction for 2-mark questions), while MSQs and NAT questions do not carry negative marks. The exam evaluates conceptual understanding, analytical ability, and problem-solving skills at the undergraduate level of engineering and science subjects.

GATE 2026 - General Aptitude

The General Aptitude section is compulsory for all candidates appearing in GATE 2026, irrespective of their engineering or science discipline. This section carries 15 marks out of 100 and is designed to assess a candidate’s basic language skills and numerical ability. It plays an important role in improving overall scores because the questions are generally moderate in difficulty and scoring in nature.

The section is divided into two major parts: Verbal Ability and Numerical Ability. Verbal Ability evaluates English language proficiency, including grammar usage, vocabulary strength, sentence structure, and reading comprehension skills. Candidates are expected to understand passages, complete sentences logically, and identify correct grammatical usage.

Numerical Ability focuses on fundamental mathematical concepts typically studied at the school level. It tests logical reasoning, quantitative aptitude, and data interpretation skills. Questions may involve percentages, ratios, averages, profit and loss calculations, time and work problems, and basic data analysis through charts or tables.

Since this section is common for all branches and relatively scoring, consistent practice of aptitude questions and previous year GATE papers can significantly boost performance.

  • 2-mark MCQ –2/3 mark for wrong answer

  • No negative marking for unattempted questions

MSQ Marking Rules

  • Full marks only if all correct options are selected

  • No partial marking

  • No negative marking

NAT Marking Rules

  • No negative marking

  • No options given

GATE 2026 - Score Calculation Formula

Step 1: Add Marks for Correct Answers

Add marks for all correctly answered MCQs, MSQs, and NAT questions.

Step 2: Subtract Negative Marks (Only for MCQs)

Subtract:

  • 0.33 for each wrong 1-mark MCQ

  • 0.66 for each wrong 2-mark MCQ

Final Formula

Example Calculation

Suppose you attempted:

  • 10 correct 1-mark MCQs 10 marks

  • 5 correct 2-mark MCQs 10 marks

  • 2 wrong 1-mark MCQs 0.66

  • 1 wrong 2-mark MCQ 0.66

  • 6 correct MSQ/NAT (2 marks each) 12 marks

Calculation:

Total correct = 10 + 10 + 12 = 32
Total negative = 0.66 + 0.66 = 1.32

Expected Score = 32 – 1.32 = 30.68

Important Notes

  • This is your raw score, not the normalized score (normalization applies if multiple sessions are conducted).

  • Final score may slightly vary after answer key revisions.

  • Always calculate using the official provisional answer key.

Changes Due to Session Difficulty?

No

Yes (if multi-session paper)

Why Normalization Is Applied?

Normalization is used when a paper is conducted in multiple sessions to ensure fairness. Since difficulty levels may slightly vary across sessions, normalization adjusts marks so that no candidate is disadvantaged.

Normalization ensures:

  • Equal evaluation across sessions

  • Fair comparison of candidates

  • Standardized ranking

If a paper is conducted in a single session, normalization may not be required.

Formula Overview (Simplified)

For multi-session papers, the normalized marks are calculated using a statistical formula based on:

  • Average marks of top 0.1% candidates

  • Average marks of all candidates

  • Session-wise performance comparison

Then, the GATE Score is calculated using:

Where:

  • = Candidate’s normalized marks

  • = Qualifying marks for that category

  • = Average marks of top candidates

  • = Score assigned to qualifying marks (usually 350)

  • = Score assigned to top marks (usually 900)

(Exact formula parameters are published in the official notification.)

Key Takeaway

  • Raw Marks = What you scored out of 100

  • GATE Score = Scaled score used for ranking & admissions

  • Normalization ensures fairness in multi-session exams

GATE 2026 – Normalization Process

The Normalization Process in GATE 2026 is used to ensure fairness when a particular paper is conducted in multiple sessions. Since slight variations in difficulty level may occur between sessions, normalization adjusts the raw marks so that no candidate is advantaged or disadvantaged due to the session they appeared in. This process is officially implemented by Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati during result preparation.

Why Is Normalization Used?

Normalization is applied only when:

  • A paper is conducted in more than one session

  • The number of candidates is large

  • Difficulty levels may slightly vary between sessions

Purpose of Normalization

  • Maintain fairness across sessions

  • Equalize difficulty variations

  • Ensure accurate ranking

  • Provide uniform evaluation standards

If a paper is conducted in a single session, normalization is usually not required.

How Normalization Affects Final Score

Normalization adjusts the raw marks before calculating the final GATE score. This means:

  • Your raw marks may slightly increase or decrease

  • Adjusted marks are used to compute the final GATE score

  • Ranking is based on normalized marks, not raw marks

Impact on Candidates

Scenario Effect on Marks

Session Slightly Tougher

Marks may increase slightly after normalization

Session Slightly Easier

Marks may reduce slightly after normalization

No normalization applied

GATE 2026 – Qualifying Marks

The GATE Qualifying Marks represent the minimum marks required for a candidate to be considered “qualified” in a particular paper. These marks are announced along with the result by Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati. Qualifying marks vary every year depending on factors such as exam difficulty and overall candidate performance.

Category-Wise Qualifying Marks (General Pattern)

GATE follows a fixed formula to determine category-wise qualifying marks. Although exact values change every year and differ by paper, the general rule is:

  • General Category Based on formula (usually around 25 marks or higher depending on paper)

  • OBC-NCL / EWS 90% of General category qualifying marks

  • SC / ST / PwD 2/3 (66.7%) of General category qualifying marks

Counselling

GATE: This exam is one of the most prestigious examinations in India, and the purpose of GATE Exam is intended to assess students' proficiency in fields such as Engineering and Science

GATE 2026 – Counselling

After the declaration of the GATE 2026 result, qualified candidates can participate in the admission process for postgraduate programs such as M.Tech, ME, MS, and PhD in various institutes across India. The result is announced by Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati, but the actual admission process is conducted separately by participating institutes. Unlike some entrance exams, GATE does not have a single unified counselling body for all institutes. Instead, admissions are carried out through different platforms and institute-level procedures.

For IIT admissions, candidates must register on the COAP (Common Offer Acceptance Portal), which facilitates offer acceptance but does not conduct centralized seat allotment. For NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs, admissions are conducted through CCMT (Centralized Counselling for M.Tech/M.Arch/M.Plan), which manages registration, choice filling, and seat allotment. Apart from these centralized platforms, some institutes and state universities conduct their own individual admission processes.

It is important to understand the difference between the admission process and counselling. Counselling generally refers to the procedure of registration, choice filling, and seat allotment based on rank and preferences. The admission process, however, is broader and includes application submission, shortlisting, interviews (if any), document verification, fee payment, and final enrolment. Therefore, after receiving the GATE result, candidates must actively apply to relevant institutes or counselling portals within the specified timelines to secure admission.

GATE 2026 - Participating Institutes

The GATE 2026 score is accepted by various prestigious institutes across India for admission to postgraduate programs such as M.Tech, ME, MS, and PhD. While the examination is conducted by Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati, the admission process is handled separately by the participating institutes. There is no single centralized counselling system for all institutes. Admissions to IITs are coordinated through COAP, NITs/IIITs/GFTIs through CCMT, and state or private institutes usually conduct their own individual admission processes.

GATE 2026 - Admission Portals

After qualifying GATE 2026, candidates must use specific admission portals depending on the institute type. While the exam is conducted by Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati, admissions are processed through designated platforms such as COAP and CCMT.

COAP (Common Offer Acceptance Portal)

COAP is primarily used for IIT admissions (M.Tech/MS/PhD programs). It is not a counselling body that allots seats; instead, it is a platform where candidates can view and accept/reject offers made by IITs.

How COAP Works

  • Candidates apply separately to individual IITs.

  • IITs evaluate applications and release offers.

  • Offers are displayed on the COAP portal.

  • Candidates choose one of the options:

    • Accept & Freeze

    • Retain & Wait

    • Reject

COAP only manages offer acceptance, not seat allotment.

COAP Registration Process

  1. Visit the COAP portal
  2. Register using GATE Registration Number and details
  3. Verify email & mobile number
  4. Log in and track offers during each round

CCMT (Centralized Counselling for M.Tech/M.Arch/M.Plan)

CCMT is the centralized counselling platform for NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs.

 What CCMT Handles

  • Registration

  • Fee payment

  • Choice filling

Cut Off

GATE: This exam is one of the most prestigious examinations in India, and the purpose of GATE Exam is intended to assess students' proficiency in fields such as Engineering and Science

GATE 2026 – Cutoff

The GATE 2026 Cutoff refers to the minimum marks or score required for a candidate to qualify the examination or secure admission into a particular institute or program. It acts as a benchmark to determine eligibility for further stages such as postgraduate admissions or PSU recruitment. The official qualifying cutoff is released along with the result by Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati, the organizing institute for GATE 2026.

There are two main types of cutoffs in GATE. The first is the Qualifying Cutoff, which is the minimum mark required to be considered “GATE qualified.” This cutoff is category-wise (General, OBC-NCL, SC/ST, EWS, PwD) and paper-specific. The second is the Admission Cutoff, which is determined separately by individual institutes such as IITs, NITs, and other participating colleges. Admission cutoffs are usually much higher than the qualifying cutoff and vary based on factors like seat availability, branch preference, competition level, and candidate category. Therefore, qualifying GATE does not guarantee admission, as candidates must meet the respective institute’s admission cutoff for their chosen program.

GATE 2026 – Qualifying Cutoff

The GATE Qualifying Cutoff is the minimum mark required for a candidate to be considered “qualified” in a particular paper. It is officially released along with the result by Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati. The qualifying cutoff is paper-specific and category-wise, meaning it varies depending on the subject and reservation category. It is important to note that qualifying GATE does not guarantee admission; it only makes a candidate eligible for further admission processes.

The qualifying marks are determined using a predefined formula and statistical criteria, which may vary slightly based on the performance of candidates in a given year.

  • Exam difficulty

  • Number of candidates

  • Number of seats

  • Overall performance

4. Is qualifying GATE enough to get into IIT?

No.
Qualifying only makes you eligible. IIT admission requires a much higher score or better rank.

5. Are cutoffs different for each branch?

Yes, Each paper (CSE, EE, ME, CE, etc.) has a separate cutoff based on competition and performance.

6. Are category-wise cutoffs different?

Yes.
Separate cutoffs are declared for:

  • General

  • OBC-NCL

  • EWS

  • SC

  • ST

  • PwD

7. Does normalization affect the cutoff?

Yes, in multi-session papers.
Normalized marks are used to calculate qualifying status and ranking, which can slightly impact the cutoff.

8. What is considered a safe score for IITs?

Generally, a GATE score of 750–900+ (branch-dependent) is considered competitive for top IITs.

9. What is a safe score for NITs?

Typically, a GATE score of 600–750 gives a good chance for top NITs (varies by branch and category).

10. Do PSUs have their own cutoff?

Yes, PSUs decide their own shortlisting cutoff, which is often very high and varies by branch and vacancies.
