Central Electro Chemical Research Institute, Karaikudi (CECRI)
About
Central Electrochemical Research Institute, the nation's premier research organization, is a public institute located in Karaikudi, Tamil Nadu. CECRI is one of a chain of forty national Laboratories under the aegis of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) in New Delhi. The institute took roots in the patriotic fervour of RM. Alagappa Chettiar, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru and Dr. Shanthi Swarup Bhatnagar. Founded on 25 July 1948 at Karaikudi in Tamil Nadu, CECRI came into existence on 14 January 1953 when Dr. S. Radhakrishnan dedicated CSIR-CECRI, the 12th national laboratory under the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), to the nation.
CSIR-Central Electrochemical Research Institute (CSIR-CECRI) is a publically funded organization which strives for scientific excellence and societal benefits. The vision is to become a global R&D platform for innovation in Electrochemical Science and Technology, Including Corrosion Science, Electrochemical Materials, and Electrochemical Power Sources.
Headquartered at Karaikudi, CSIR-CECRI has four extension centres in Chennai, Cochin, Mandapam and Tuticorin, focusing on Fuel cells, Marine Corrosion and offshore corrosion testing. In living up to its raison d'etre, the institute works on a gamut of problems covering all facets of Electrochemical Science and Technology: Corrosion Science and Engineering, Electrochemical Materials Science, Electrochemical Power Sources, Electrochemical Pollution Control, Fundamental Electro Chemistry, Electro metallurgy, Industrial Metal Finishing, and Nanoscale Electrochemistry.

Central Electro Chemical Research Institute, a constituent of Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), is affiliated to Anna University, Chennai and is approved by AICTE, New Delhi. The institute is also accredited by NBA. CSIR-CECRI, over the years, has published about 5500 papers, filed 750 patents, developed 250 technologies and carried over 600 Projects
CECRI offers a distinctive direct B.Tech course in Chemical and Electro Chemical Engineering in collaboration with Anna University in Full Time mode. This is a four year course that has an approved yearly enrolment capacity of forty (40) students. This programme is aimed at giving the students a well rounded knowledge and understanding of chemical engineering and more specifically the electrochemical unit process. The course provided by the institute is approved by AICTE and accredited by NBA which makes it capable of delivering quality education.
CECRI follows a merit based admission procedure and it comes under two categories of admissions. Two ways students' admission makes it possible for CECRI to admit students who are qualified both from the state and nationwide. Based on its overall vision, it is an important fact that CECRI has a strong focus on Research and Innovation in the field of Electro Chemistry.
The Central Electro Chemical Research Institute provides state-of-the-art Infrastructural Facilities including Modern Classrooms, well-equipped Drawing Rooms, Laboratories, Library, separate Hostels for Boys and Girls, Auditorium., Computer Labs, Canteen, Medical/Health Centre, and Sports Facilities, Gym, etc. The campus has internal Roads, Staff Quarters, a bore-well for water supply, Street lights and a RO plant for the staff quarters. The Institute also organizes various activities and games like Football, Cricket, and Athletics. An Inter-college sports meet “ARMAGEDDON” is organized by the students annually to promote healthy competition among the students. Technical Forums like, Indian Society for Technical Education (ISTE), Society for Advancement of Electrochemical Science & Technology (SAEST), Electrochemical Technologists Association (ETA), Cultural and Literary Association (KALA) are also offered in the Institute to showcase the inherent talents and the encourage extra-curricular activities to enhance holistic growth.
CSIR-CECRI supports researchers with its library and advanced facilities, and organizes national and international conferences with the Society for Advancement of Electrochemical Science and Technology (SAEST). The institute also engages in social responsibility initiatives, including entrepreneurship and youth development programs, and has received multiple technology awards for its contributions to global and Indian industries.
The Centre for Education (CFE) at CECRI, Karaikudi was founded in 1988 as part of CECRI’s Human Resource Development initiative. The Director of CSIR-CECRI oversees the operations of the Centre, supported by a dedicated council. Since its inception, CFE has played a vital role within the institute, significantly impacting the educational journey of numerous students. It is primarily responsible for offering the distinctive 4-year, 8-semester Bachelor of Technology program in Chemical and Electrochemical Engineering.
CSIR-CECRI focuses on advancing electrochemical technology through innovative products, processes, and research, collaborating with labs in India and abroad. Its expertise is sought by private industries and government agencies in various sectors.
