Overview

The International Institute for Population Sciences (IIPS), Mumbai, formerly known as the Demographic Training and Research Centre (DTRC) till 1970, was established in July 1956 under the joint sponsorship of Sir Dorabji Tata Trust, the Government of India and the United Nations. It serves as a regional centre for Training and Research in Population Studies for the ESCAP region. The Institute was re-designated to its present title in 1985 to facilitate the expansion of its academic activities. It was declared as a 'Deemed to be University' on August 14, 1985, under Section 3 of the UGC Act, 1956 by the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India. The recognition has facilitated the award of recognized degrees by the Institute itself and paved the way for further expansion of the Institute as an academic institution. In 2006, the Institute celebrated its Golden Jubilee.

IIPS holds a unique position among all the regional population centres. It was the first such centre started, and it serves a much larger population than any of the other regional centres. The Institute is under the administrative control of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India.

There are seven Academic Departments in the Institute. The faculty members and the supporting staff belong to a diverse interdisciplinary background with specialization in some core areas of population sciences, trained in India or abroad.

The Institute is the hub of a population and health-related teaching and research in India, playing a vital role for planning and development of the country. During the past years, students from different countries of Asia and the Pacific region, Africa and North America have trained at the Institute. The alumni are occupying prestigious positions at national and international organisations, universities and colleges, and reputed non-governmental organisations. Besides teaching and research activities, the Institute also provides consultancy to the Government and Non-Governmental organizations and other academic institutions.

During the last six decades, the Institute has organized many seminar and conferences of National and International level in the field of population studies which are of worldwide importance. Institute had conducted many prime surveys like National Family Health Survey (NFHS), District Level Household Survey (DLHS), Assessment of National Rural Health Mission (NRHM), YOUTH in India Project, Global Adult Tobacco Survey (GATS India Project), Research Intervention on Sexual Health Theory to Action (RISHTA Project), and Nutrition Surveys and Longitudinal Aging Study in India (LASI).

Mission

The overarching mission of IIPS shall be to contribute to the improvement of the population health outcomes and their determinants and achievement of health equity through programmatic initiatives that help formulate interventions at the policy and/or practice level to address issues relating to population health. Achieving this mission involve:

Expanding the pool of specialized human resources, including young professionals and scholars, equipped with the knowledge and skills required to support programme planning, implementation and monitoring for improving population health outcomes and health-related quality of life for all.

Strengthening institutional and human capacity at the national and State levels to formulate and implement effective policies, plans and programmes to ensure achievement of targets relating to population health outcomes and reduction in inequity associated with these outcomes.

Improving access to and sharing of information and knowledge, including research results, promising practices and innovations, required for making informed decisions for tackling issues relating to population health outcomes and their determinants.

Promoting, through advocacy and communication initiatives and building partnerships with community and other stakeholders, the adoption of improved policies and practices, and appropriate behavioral practices by individuals and communities to improve population health outcomes such as reduction in premature mortality and improving health-related quality of life and tackle issues associated with health determinants.

Courses

Admission Process

International Institute for Population Sciences Admissions

Admission to M.A. and M.Sc courses is done on the basis of the online entrance test conducted by the institute.
Admission to M.P.S and M.Phil course is done on the basis of the online entrance exam followed by a personal interview.
Admission to a full-time Ph.D. course is done on the basis of the online entrance exam, writing proposal, and personal interview. While for part-time Ph.D. admissions, the institute conducts an offline test followed by a personal interview.
Selection to Post Doctoral Fellowship is done on the basis of the presentation of the research proposal by the candidate and the personal interview.
How to apply?
Candidates can apply for the desired course via the application link available on the institute's official website.
Before applying, candidates must go through the admission bulletin available on the institute’s website.
Fee for online application form is rupees 1000 for UR category students, rupees 500 for OBC and EWS category students, and rupees 250 for candidates belonging to SC, ST, and PWD category.
Post completion of the online application, candidates must send a hard-copy of the online application form along with required documents to the Academic Section Incharge. The postal address for the same is mentioned in the admission bulletin.

Online Process:
Go to the official website of the college.
Click on the Registration Portal and create your new account.
Confirm your registration.
Fill the application form.
Now upload the document, your photos, and your signature.
Mention your work experience, if you have.
Lastly, submit the desirable fee.

Offline Process:
Candidates can get the application form cum information brochure from the University campus or can also download the application form the official website.
After getting the application form, candidates should fill the form with required details.
After filling the application form, it must be submitted along with the fee of Rs 500/- through demand draft, in favor of Director, IIPS, Mumbai within the final submission dates.

Placements

IIPS Mumbai Placements

The institute has a well-established placement cell to look after International Institute for Population Sciences placements. The cell helps and facilitates graduating students in finding suitable job opportunities. The cell invites various organisations to conduct International Institute for Population Sciences placement drive. The cell shares students' profiles to the organisations, resumes are made available to companies/organisations, employers shortlist candidates based on their resumes and job requirements, companies conduct selection tests/interviews to select candidates. International Institute for Population Sciences placement cell facilitates this selection process conducted usually in April to June every year.

International Institute for Population Sciences Placement Process

The placement team/cell of the International Institute for Population Sciences contacts various companies to conduct the placement drive at the campus. The placement cell sends the placement brochure to the interested organisations. Thereafter, interested companies can register for International Institute for Population Sciences placement by sending an email to the placement cell.

Pre-Placement Talks- Interested organisations conduct pre-placement talks on the campus where they interact with students and intimate them about the organisation and roles being offered by the organisation.
Shortlisting- Students are being shortlisted by the organisation on the basis of their resumes.
Allocation of slots and Visiting the campus. Interested companies are required to fix the date and time on which they will visit the campus for International Institute for Population Sciences placements.
Selection Process- The selection process includes written tests, GD and interview/interview(s).
Final offrs- After the result is declared, selected students are extended job offers.

Facility

IIPS Mumbai Facilities
The institute offers several facilities for students. International Institute for Population Sciences facilities list includes separate hostels for boys and girls, seminar halls, library etc. Students studying full-time master’s programmes at International Institute for Population Sciences are required to stay in hostels. The college provides separate hostel accommodation for boys and girls. The institute has an equipped seminar hall with a seating capacity of 45. The hall is used to conduct activities such as seminars, workshops etc. A data centre is there at International Institute for Population Sciences. IIPS Mumbai also offers outdoor and indoor sports facilities. A guest house is there to accommodate and provide short and long time stays to students' family members, visiting faculty, official and unofficial institute guests, etc.

Boys Hostel
International Institute for Population Sciences has two separate hostel buildings. The institute offers separate hostel facilities for boys and girls. The institute has a boys' hostel to accommodate students. All full-time master’s programme students are required to stay in the hostels. Students are offered basic facilities/amenities at International Institute for Population Sciences boys hostel such as cot, table, chair, cupboard, mattress, pillow, buckets etc. The hostels are wifi enabled. Facilities for indoor games such as table tennis, carom, and chess are available. Outdoor sports facilities are also available for students in IIPS Mumbai hostels.

Girls Hostel
International Institute for Population Sciences has a separate hostel for girls. It must be noted master’s students are required to stay in hostels. All the basic facilities are offered to students at hostels. International Institute for Population Sciences hostel facilities includes cot, table, chair, cupboard, mattress, pillow, buckets etc. Indoor and outdoor sports facilities are also available for students at IIPS Mumbai hostels.

Medical/Hospital
International Institute for Population Sciences offers free medical advice and counselling for students, faculty and staff. For medical advice, the institute has two doctors. These doctors visit International Institute for Population Sciences on daily basis.

Library
International Institute for Population Sciences has a separate building for the library. The library building has two floors covering an area of 1105 sq m. IIPS Mumbai library is fully air-conditioned and has small study rooms with a seating capacity of 100. The library collection of IIPS Mumbai includes online, print and digital resources. Also, the library contains all the publications of the United Nations, and the World Bank published on Population Studies and relevant topics.

I.T Infrastructure
International Institute for Population Sciences has a data centre comprising high-end servers. International Institute for Population Sciences (IIPS Mumbai) has a robust IT infrastructure.

Auditorium
The University has an auditorium facility for events and seminar.

Guest Room/Waiting Room
International Institute for Population Sciences has a guest house for students’ family members, visiting faculty, official and unofficial institute guests, conference participants, alumni etc. The guesthouse offers short time and long time stay for visitors. The guesthouse includes double rooms, single rooms and conference rooms.

Classrooms
International Institute for Population Sciences has six classrooms equipped with modern facilities. IIPS Mumbai classrooms are equipped with computers, projectors, modern sound systems, overhead projectors, and audio-visual tools. In addition to this, International Institute for Population Sciences also has climate control systems, comfortable furniture that facilitates the teaching and learning process.
