About us

Patkar-Varde College is well-known in the western suburbs of Mumbai. Since its establishment in 1964, it has constantly worked at increasing the number of courses it offers students and bettering its infrastructure. The College has grown steadily over the last four decades and we have never turned away from challenges. In keeping with the spirit of learning and growing through criticism, we have set up high standards, working continuously towards advanced goals.

History

The College was founded by Chikitsak Samuha, a club formed of like-minded individuals who were keenly interested in education. The Samuha had already established and successfully run a school in Girgaon for many years – Shirolkar High School – before they decided to venture into the field of higher education.

The College stands on a plot of ground donated by Late Smt. Motiben Dalvi. The College was named after Sir Sitaram Patkar, a distinguished judge of the Bombay High Court, who was knighted after his retirement, and his wife, Lady Shantabai Patkar. Sir Sitaram was deeply interested in furthering the cause of women’s education and was the Vice-Chancellor of the S.N.D.T. University for many years.

The College of Arts & Science started functioning from the academic year 1964-65, with Late Prof. A.N. Kothare, a distinguished lecturer in Chemistry, as the first Principal. In response to a heavy local demand for the Commerce faculty, the Commerce wing was started in 1980 with two divisions of FYBCom, which were extended upto the TY level in subsequent years.

To provide career-based education, the College started degree-level Self-Financed courses of BMS and BSc Computer Science from the year 2000-2001 and BSc - IT from the year 2001-2002. Since then, to provide Students with the best possible learning opportunities, the College has constantly and consistently upgraded the courses offered and the infrastructure required for these courses. The focus has always been the enhancement of Students' employability and soft skills and thus to make them able and competent to become the citizens of the future.

A new building to house new SF Courses and a Ladies’ Hostel was completed and became operational in 2012-13.

Patkar-Varde College has a place of pride amongst the various educational institutions from Jogeshwari to Virar. It has been rendering a valuable service to the suburban community since 1964. Many of our alumni hold very good positions in various fields.

The College was re-accredited with a score of 3.53 by NAAC in 2018. Following this, Academic Autonomy was conferred on the College, and was implemented from 2019-20. In 2019-20, the College also became the proud recipient of the RUSA 2.0 grant under Component 8, that is, "Enhancing Quality and Excellence in Select Autonomous Colleges". The College has thus joined the elite club of the 70 high performing Autonomous Colleges that have received this Grant on the National level, and 26 among Maharashtra.

Placement

There is a structured mechanism for Career  Guidance  and  Placement of Students. The College Placement Cell identifies job opportunities via mail, WhatsApp, and social media, and communicates them to students. In addition, Departments invite experts from industry to provide career guidance. Soft skills training programmes for students are conducted to prepare them for interviews; these include guidance on group discussions, and writing résumés.
Our Students are placed at reputable National and International companies such as TCS, L&T, Datamatics, ICICI Prudential, Wipro, Tech Mahindra, Bajaj Capital, MotilalOswal, Cap Gemini, Accenture,INFOSYS, Nokia, iGate, Sutherland Global Services, and Morgan Stanley.

 The College Career Guidance and Placement Cell conducted a number of activities for Students in 2018-19. 

The following is a brief report:

• A Lecture and Interactive Session on “Urban Governance”: A Lecture and Interactive Session on “Urban Governance” was organized on July 18, 2018, in association with PRAJA, a Mumbai-based non-partisan voluntary organisation that works towards accountable governance.

The main goal of PRAJA is to elicit participation from the people in the government’s decision-making processes so that accountability can be established in the system. With this view, they offer a fellowship programme to students, who, if selected, get paid Rs. 10,000/- per month. Students had a number of questions, which were patiently answered by the associates from PRAJA.

Ms. Disha Sawant was selected as a fellow under this programme and was offered a stipend of Rs. 10,000/- per month.

• Lectures focusing on Career Guidance for Arts and Commerce Students:

1. MBA: On January 14, 2019, in association with the Department of English, a lecture on “MBA as a Career Option” was organised. The speaker was Prof. Niteesh Srivastava from ITM Group of Institutions. More than 80 students from across the faculties attended the lecture and participated in the interactive session that followed.

2. LAW: On January 14, 2019, in association with the Department of Economics a lecture on “LAW as a Career Option” was organised. The speaker was Prof. Pramila Dhiman from KES Law College. More than 80 students from across the faculties attended the lecture and participated in the interactive session that followed.

3. STOCK MARKET: On January 21, 2019, in association with the Department of Accountancy, a lecture on “Stock Market” was organised. The resource person was Mr. Kalpesh Kanase from ICOFP – A Bajaj Capital Group Company. More than 100 students benefited from it.

• Lectures focusing on Soft Skills: 

1. A workshop on “Use of Computers in Day-to-day Life” was organised in association with the College ICT Committee on February 13, 2019. This workshop was conducted by experts from Microsoft Corporation under their initiative “Computer se Karo, Computer se Badho”. Students were also given information about a number of free courses and self-learning videos by Microsoft, that would help them use MS Office effectively. More than 100 Students participated in this workshop.

An interactive session on “CV Writing and Interview Etiquette” for TYBSc Students was organized on February 15, 2019. Prof. Ulhas Karkhanis, Associate Dean, IES Management College & Research Centre was the speaker at the session, which was attended by 60 Students.

Various notices regarding internships, and articleships were displayed on the Placement Cell noticeboard.

Financial aids are available to students from the central government, state government, the institution and others:

• Best N.S.S. student, Best Sportsman, Best N.C.C. Cadet, Best Male and Female Athelete.

• Student / Staff member procuring studies for Ph.D. / M.Phil. in Science, Literature and Commerce are given scholarship instituted in the name of Ex-Principal, Dr.R.R. Ambardekar.

• In addition to these prizes the College offers several prizes and awards to meritorious students every year.
