It was in March 1835 that the Government of India stated that “the object of Government ought to be the promotion of European literature and sciences among the natives of India.” It was an affirmation of Macaulay’s Minute on Education. George Norton, then the Advocate-General, and a few other eminent personalities presented a petition in November 1939 signed by 70,000 ‘native inhabitants’ seeking institutions of higher education.
E. B. Powell, a University of Cambridge Wrangler in Mathematics, was chosen to be the first Principal. On 16 October 1840, he and his staff opened Presidency School in a rented building in Egmore known as Edinburgh House, This school, established as the Madras Preparatory School was shifted to Popham's Broadway in 1841 before being repurposed as a high school, and then a graduate college. The School grew into Presidency College and when the University of Madras was founded in 1857, Presidency College became affiliated with it. In 1870, the college moved to its present location on Kamaraj Salai, overlooking the famouse Marina Beach, Chennai.
Thus Presidency College, Chennai is a premium institute established in 1840 by the British Indian Government and is one of the oldest Government Arts colleges in India. It is one of two Presidency Colleges established by the British in India, the other being the Presidency College, Kolkata. The college was granted Autonomous status in 1987. Presidency College Chennai has been reaccredited by NAAC with a ‘B+’ grade. Presidency College is ranked AIR 7th by NIRF 2021 for college ranking. The 2023 NIRF ranking of the college is 3rd in the college category.
The courses offered by the college are approved by AICTE. Presidency College, Chennai offers Full-time courses including B.A, B.Com, B.Sc, and BCA at the UG level along with M.A, M.Com, M.Sc, MSW, and MCA at the PG level. Students can pursue in multiple range of courses in various streams of Humanities & Social Sciences, Science, IT & Software.
