The Tamil Nadu Dr. Ambedkar Law University - TNDALU was established by the Government of Tamil Nadu through an Act of the State Legislature. It was officially inaugurated by His Excellency, Thiru K.R. Narayanan, the President of India, on September 20, 1997. The University began its operations on October 3, 1997. The University is named after Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, the principal architect of the Indian Constitution. It is recognized by the Bar Council of India (BCI) and the University Grants Commission (UGC) under Sections 2(f) and 12(b) of the UGC Act. Additionally, the University is a member of the Association of Indian Universities (AIU), the Association of Commonwealth Universities, U.K., and the Indian Institute of Public Administration, New Delhi. It plays a key role as the nodal agency for promoting legal education in Tamil Nadu. This University is the first comprehensive, sui generis Law University in India and stands out as a unique institution among all law universities in the country. It is the first Law University in India to exclusively offer legal education through its own campus and affiliated colleges across the state. It is also the first of its kind in South Asia. The University provides legal education not only at its main campus but also through sixteen affiliated colleges located in various cities of Tamil Nadu, including Chennai, Madurai, Trichy, Coimbatore, Tirunelveli, Chengalpattu, Vellore, and Salem. HON'BLE Prof. Dr. N. S. Santhosh Kumar is the current HON'BLE Vice-Chancellor since 2021.

TNDALU has a Placement Assistance Facility. In response to the growing number of students enrolled in various law programs (UG - 5 and 3 years, and PG - 2 years), a dedicated “Placement Cell” (PC) has been established. The primary goal of the Placement Cell is to offer placement support to all graduating students. Upon completion of their courses, many students may choose to pursue court practice or further studies. Additionally, some may opt to take competitive exams such as the Civil Judge exam, UPSC, TNPSC, and others. For these students, the following opportunities are available. Admission Criteria:

5 Year Course (BA LLB.,(Hons) BBA LLB.,(Hons) B.COM LLB(Hons)., BCA LLB (Hons))

Admission Process

The university offers a three years undergraduate in LL.B. (Hons.) with a total number of 120 seats. The university also runs a five year integrated course in LL.B. (Hons.). with BA, BBA, BCA and B.Com which has 548 seats in total. Candidates for all the UG courses will be selected based on their marks in the qualifying examination. Application process starts generally in the month of June every year.

For admission in undergraduate course, the minimum marks required in the qualifying exam is 55% for SC/ ST/ NRI candidates and 60% for general candidates. For admission in integrated courses, the minimum marks in the qualifying exam required is 60% for SC/ ST candidates and 70% for general candidates.

Eligibility 

• Candidates should have 10+2 or 3 years Diploma/ Polytechnic with at least 70% in aggregate from a recognised institution
  
• SC/ST candidates must have 60% in the aggregate of all subjects
  
• NRI candidates should have at least 70% in the qualifying examination
  
• Candidates applying for B.Com.LL.B.[Hons.] must have studied Commerce or equivalent subject related to Commerce in the Higher Secondary Examination
  
• Candidates seeking admission to the B.C.A.LL.B.[Hons.] programme must’ve Computer Science or an equivalent subject in the Higher Secondary Examination
  
• 6.15% of the total seats have been earmarked for NRI candidates

LLB Eligibility – 3 Year Course

• General/OBC Candidates: Minimum 60% in graduation from a recognized university.
  
• SC/ST Candidates: Minimum 55% in graduation from a recognized university.

LLM - 2 Year Course (Constitutional Law, Business Law, Criminal Law, International Law, Human Rights Law, Intellectual Property Rights, Environmental Law, Cyber Law, Family Law)

Admission Process

• The University runs two years post-graduation course LL.M. degree in nine different specialisations with an intake capacity of 20 per specialization.
  
• Admission to the LL.M course in Tamil Nadu Dr. Ambedkar Law University is done on the basis of marks obtained in the qualifying exam. Application process generally starts in the month of June every year. Candidates who have successfully completed a three year / five year under-graduate degree course in Law with minimum of 45% marks under new regulation or 40% under old regulation are eligible to apply.
  

Eligibility

Pass in B.L/L.L.B either 5 or 3 years with 45% marks under new regulation or 40% under old regulation.

Ph.D., - 3 Year Courses

Admission Process

The University offers full time as well as part time course in Ph.D. The minimum duration of the Ph.D. full time programme is 2 years and the maximum period is 5 years. The minimum duration of the Ph.D. part time programme is 3 years and the maximum period is 6 years.
For admission in part time course, the candidates who meet the eligibility should possess the following requirements:

• In the case of Judges, who have put in not less than 5 years of regular service as Judicial Officers and attended seminars and presented at least 2 Papers.
  
• In the case of teachers who have put in 1 year of full-time regular service in the University or in any of the affiliated Colleges of this University.
  
• In the case of lawyers and others, those who are working in the Research Institutions / Research Departments connected with Law, should have put in at least 5 years of professional experience and presented at least two papers in Seminars and Conferences. Selection is done on the basis of Entrance test and Interview conducted by TNDALU.

Eligibility

• Master of Laws Degree with 55% marks in aggregate.
• Entrance test and Interview conducted by TNDALU.

Placement

It offers five year integrated law degree course Viz. B. A. B. L. (Hons). It was primarily intended to provide quality legal education on parwith the National Law Schools in the country. The course stress is laid more on how to make the law students professionally competent. The database of the IV and V year students of SOEL in readily available.

In order to make a niche in legal education, The Tamil Nadu Dr Ambedkar Law University has established a student – industry interface Centre (SIIC) for opening more avenues in the legal sphere. We already do have the credit of reputed banks and leading law firms in our database. Our first batch of Post Graduate students specialised in Business Law has been recruitment by banks through Campus interview last year. As part of internship programme, our students are given inputs to the needs of the Industry. Lot of students in the 6th and 7th Semester have been absorbed by various law firms and few serving to the Hon’ble High Court Judges, Chennai. At this juncture, we look forward in creating better avenues apart from professional practices, joining hands with Corporate, IT mayos, MNC’s. It is our proud privilege to announce that our placement Cell awaits formal inauguration.
