  Vellore Institute of Technlogy (VIT) was established in the year 1984 under Section 3 of the University Grants Commission (UGC) Act, 1956, as a self-financing institution called the Vellore Engineering College. The Union Ministry of Human Resources Development conferred University status on Vellore Engineering College in 2001. VIT was established with the aim of providing quality higher education on par with international standards.   Admission is based on candidates' performance in the VITEEE exam, which is followed by VITEEE counselling. Admission to other courses, such as B.Sc, BBA, B.Sc, B.Com, and M.Sc, is based on previous qualifying exam performance. Admission to the B. Arch programme requires a valid NATA score.

  1 VITEEE Scholarship given under "GV School Development Programme" (GVSDP) Meritorious rank scored in the VIT Engineering Entrance Exam (VITEEE) in the first year of the programme and the continuance of the same for consecutive years of the programme, based on the criteria mentioned in the award letter issued on admission.

  2 Smt. Rajeswari Viswanathan Memorial Scholarship (Financial Assistance to deserving students) Meritorious students from an economically weak background who satisfy criteria specified In the application.

  3 Merit Awards The top 10 students of each branch of a programme from the 1st to final year, with a record of above 75% attendance, no history of arrears and not having violated of the code of conduct of the Institute

  4 Cent percent Attendance Awards* Maintained a record of 100% attendance in each semester

  5 Merit Awards for NRI / Foreign students Students with no standing arrears and have completed the registered courses in the first attempt with the CGPA of above eight and have not violated the code of displine would be selected as a whole from each branch of engineering.

VIT has a number of centers for physical education and sports activities that help the students maintain physical fitness and develop a competitive spirit.
