NEET UG: The NEET 2026 Exam (National Eligibility cum Entrance Test) is a single national-level entrance examination conducted for MBBS, BDS, BAMS, BHMS, BUMS, etc. courses for which more than 23,00,000 candidates register every year. 780 medical colleges participate in the NEET exam and offer a total of 1,18,148 MBBS seats.

NEET UG 2026 EXAM

The NEET UG 2026 Exam is expected to be held on May 3, 2026, in offline (pen-and-paper) mode. The National Testing Agency (NTA), which conducts the exam, is likely to release the official notification by the end of this year. As per previous trends, nearly 23 lakh students are anticipated to register for the NEET 2026 Exam. The application form is expected to be released in the first week of February 2026, and the test will be conducted in 13 languages across India.  Aspirants preparing for NEET 2026 can  explore details on exam dates, eligibility, registration, and preparation tips to stay ahead in their journey.

To appear for NEET UG 2026, candidates must have completed 10+2 with Science (PCB) and must be at least 17 years of age as of December 31, 2026. The official notification, including the application form, syllabus, and exam pattern, will be released on the NTA website — www.neet.nta.nic.in. Scoring well in NEET 2026 is crucial, as it determines admission to India’s top medical institutions and serves as a benchmark for aspiring doctors nationwide.

As per the Medical Counselling Committee (MCC), about 13.17 lakh candidates have already taken admission under the 15% All India Quota (AIQ) in the first three rounds of NEET Counselling 2025.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Education is carrying out a detailed study to check if NEET can be shifted to an online mode in the future. Officials have said that the NTA is exploring the idea of conducting the exam as a computer-based test, possibly held over multiple days and time slots. Reports also suggest that students may no longer get to choose their own exam city — instead, the NTA could assign it based on the address mentioned in the candidate’s Aadhaar Card.

WHAT IS NEET EXAM?

The National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) is India’s single national-level entrance exam for admission to undergraduate medical, dental, and paramedical courses such as MBBS, BDS, BSc Nursing, BAMS, BHMS, BUMS, and others offered by government and private colleges across the country.

The exam is organized by the National Testing Agency (NTA) once every year, usually in May, in offline (pen-and-paper) mode. NEET evaluates candidates on their understanding of Physics, Chemistry, and Biology (Botany & Zoology) based on the NCERT syllabus of Classes 11 and 12.

A good NEET score is crucial for securing admission to top medical colleges under the All India Quota (AIQ) and state quotas. It is also a mandatory qualification for students aspiring to pursue MBBS abroad. The test duration is 3 hours 20 minutes (200 minutes), during which candidates must attempt 180 out of 200 questions.

Conducted in 13 languages, NEET attracts over 20 lakh aspirants every year, making it one of the most competitive exams in India. Among the courses offered through NEET, MBBS remains the most sought-after, followed by BDS and BSc Nursing. Each year, the number of NEET applicants continues to rise, reflecting its growing importance in India’s medical education landscape.

NEET UG EXAM PATTERN

The NEET exam pattern has been significantly updated in recent years. As per the latest format, NEET will continue to be conducted as an offline, pen-and-paper (PBT) examination with a total duration of three hours. The question paper will include 180 mandatory multiple-choice questions, divided across the three subjects: 45 questions each in Physics and Chemistry, and 90 questions in Biology (Botany + Zoology).

Candidates must mark their answers on the OMR sheet by shading the appropriate circle using the blue or black ballpoint pen provided at the examination centre.

Below is the revised distribution of questions and marks:

Subject

180

Chemistry

Botany

Zoology

The NTA has also confirmed that the earlier optional questions have now been removed, making all questions compulsory in NEET.

Impact of These Changes

·         Higher certainty / uniformity: Since all questions are now mandatory, there's less strategic choice or “guess which 5 to skip” — students must prepare more comprehensively.

·         Time pressure increased: With fewer minutes and all questions required, time management will be more challenging.

·         Reduced complexity in choice: Removing optional questions simplifies the structure.

·         More flexibility in exam city: Allowing three city choices could help students get a more convenient or nearer exam center.

NEET 2025 COUNSELLING

The NEET 2025 counselling process, conducted by the Medical Counselling Committee (MCC), began on July 21, 2025, and is expected to continue till November 20, 2025. However, this timeline is likely to be extended further as the choice filling deadline has been postponed, which may delay the final round seat allotment results.

The MCC has not yet released the revised counselling schedule. Initially, the entire process was scheduled to conclude by November 15, 2025.

Students who have qualified NEET 2025 by meeting or exceeding the cutoff marks are eligible to participate in the counselling process for admission to MBBS, BDS, and other medical courses across India.

The NEET 2026 counselling is conducted under two major categories:

·         15% All India Quota (AIQ) – Counselling organized by the MCC.

·         85% State Quota (SQ) – Counselling conducted by respective State Directorates of Medical Education (DME) or other designated state authorities.

Steps Involved in NEET Counselling Process:

·         Online Registration – Candidates must register on the official MCC or state counselling portal.

·         Choice Filling & Locking – Fill and lock preferred colleges and courses within the given time.

·         Seat Allotment Result – Seats are allotted based on NEET rank, preferences, and seat availability.

·         Reporting to the Allotted Institute – Candidates must confirm admission by reporting to the respective institute within the specified time frame.

Tip: Candidates should keep checking the official MCC website (mcc.nic.in) and respective state counselling portals regularly for updated schedules and announcements.

NEET percentile is calculated to indicate a candidate’s relative performance compared to all test-takers. The formula is:

NEET Percentile =( Number of candidates scoring less than you Total candidates ) × 100

Example:

If 1,50,000 Tamil Nadu candidates appeared and 1,20,000 scored less than a student:

1,20,0001,50,000×100=80%

Percentile is used to determine the All India Rank and eligibility for counselling under the NEET UG quota system.

5. Key Points to Remember

·        NEET results are declared only online; no physical copy is sent.

·        Scorecards are mandatory for participating in counselling and seat allotment.

·        Percentile scores, AIR, and category ranks are used to prepare the merit list.

The Major Changes Introduced in the NEET UG 2025

This academic year several new changes were introduced in the NEET UG (National Eligibility cum Entrance Test – Undergraduate) exam conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA) in India.  The major changes are given below:

1. Exam-Pattern Changes

·         The 2025 exam reverts to the pre-COVID format: a total of 180 compulsory questions (instead of previous optional questions) to be answered in 3 hours (180 minutes).

·         Subject-wise distribution: Physics – 45 questions; Chemistry – 45 questions; Biology (Botany + Zoology) – 90 questions.

·         Total marks: 720 (4 marks for each correct answer; –1 mark for each incorrect answer).

·         Optional questions section (Section B) has been removed — no choice now; all questions must be attempted.

·         The exam duration has been reduced by ~20 minutes compared with the previous format where extra time was given during COVID-era modifications.

2. Tie-Breaking / Merit-List Rules

·         The tie-breaking criteria have been revised: For cases where two or more candidates obtain equal marks/percentile, the inter-se-merit will be decided by:

1.    Higher marks in Biology (Botany + Zoology)

2.    Higher marks in Chemistry

3.    Higher marks in Physics

4.    Lesser proportion of incorrect vs correct answers (i.e., fewer wrong answers)

·         Importantly: Age and application number are no longer used as tie-breaker criteria.

3. Application / Eligibility / Other Administrative Changes

·         The updated syllabus for NEET UG 2025 has been notified by the Undergraduate Medical Education Board (UGMEB) under the National Medical Commission (NMC).

·         While not a direct major change to pattern, aspirants are advised to check for the updated syllabus and prepare accordingly.

·         Some reports mention that the number of exam centres in India has been rationalised/reduced.

4. Impact for Aspirants: What to Be Aware Of

·         Since all 180 questions are compulsory and duration is 180 minutes, that means on average 1 minute per question, so time-management is crucial.

·         With no optional questions, candidates cannot skip weaker topics as before — breadth of preparation becomes more important.

·         The tie-breaking rules being changed means that performance in Biology and Chemistry carry even more importance in case of equal scoring.

·         Because the pattern has changed, past year mock papers with older pattern (optional questions, extra time) may not give as reliable practice — students should use updated pattern mock tests.

Changes Introduced in NEET UG 2025

Two parts per subject: Section A (35 compulsory) + Section B (15 optional; attempt any 10)

Section B removed — now 180 questions are mandatory: 45 in Physics, 45 in Chemistry, 90 in Biology.

Continues in pen & paper (OMR) mode, in a single shift.

(same) +4 for correct, –1 for wrong, 0 for unattempted

Unchanged: +4 for correct, –1 for incorrect, no penalty for unattended.

Exam City Selection

Candidates could select two preferred exam cities

Now, candidates can choose three exam cities, but restricted to either their permanent or current address state.

APAAR ID Requirement

(In previous years, there was a discussion / requirement.)

For 2025, APAAR ID is not mandatory for registration

Impact of These Changes

·         Higher certainty / uniformity: Since all questions are now mandatory, there's less strategic choice or “guess which 5 to skip” — students must prepare more comprehensively.

·         Time pressure increased: With fewer minutes and all questions required, time management will be more challenging.

·         Reduced complexity in choice: Removing optional questions simplifies the structure.

·         More flexibility in exam city: Allowing three city choices could help students get a more convenient or nearer exam center.

NEET UG 2025 Counselling Update

NEET UG 2025 counselling, conducted by the Medical Counselling Committee (MCC), is currently underway for MBBS, BDS, and allied courses. Several important developments have emerged — from schedule revisions to the addition of new medical seats — that every aspirant needs to know. Below is the latest on what’s happening, key dates, and what you should do next.

Key Updates & Developments

  1. Round 1 Suspension & Rescheduling
    • The choice-filling and locking facility for Round 1 was temporarily suspended by MCC.
    • A revised schedule is expected; candidates are advised to keep checking the MCC portal for updates.
    • During this pause, MCC has asked participating institutes to re-verify their tentative seat matrices to ensure accuracy.
  2. Extended Registration for Round 1
    • MCC has extended the Round 1 registration window to July 31, 2025, giving candidates more time to complete their applications.
    • Important: Payment and locking choices deadlines are aligned with this extension.
  3. Round 2 Commencement & Additional Seats
    • Round 2 officially began on August 29, 2025.
    • Significantly, 197 new medical seats have been added by the National Medical Commission (NMC) and integrated into the Round 2 seat matrix.
    • Because of these new seats, MCC has extended the choice-filling window so candidates can reconsider and update their preferences.
  4. Revised Round 2 Timelines
    • Registration for Round 2: September 4 – September 9, 2025.
    • Choice filling: September 5 – September 9, 2025
    • Choice locking: September 9, 2025 (from 4:00 PM to 11:55 PM)
    • Seat allotment results for Round 2 will be out on September 17, 2025.
    • Reporting / Joining period for allotted candidates: September 18 – September 25, 2025.
  5. Round 3 Updates
    • MCC released a revised schedule for Round 3, following further updates to the seat matrix.
    • For Round 3, choice-filling deadline has been extended to October 16, 2025 (4 PM).
    • The seat allotment result for Round 3 is scheduled for October 18, 2025.
  6. NRI & Document-Verification Developments
    • MCC continues to scrutinize NRI documentation alongside the counselling process.
    • There is a noted interim relief for some NRI-quota candidates: those with valid embassy-endorsed affidavits made before July 25, 2025, may now be eligible again, subject to detailed verification.

What This Means for You

  • Stay Updated: Because the schedule has changed multiple times, it’s crucial to regularly check the official MCC website.
  • Revisit Your Choices: If you already locked preferences, revisit them — the addition of new seats might open up better or different options.
  • Prepare Documents: Make sure your verification documents (NRI certificates, ID proofs, NEET scorecard, etc.) are ready to submit as required.
  • Resignation Option: If you weren’t satisfied with your Round 1 allotment, note that resignation windows have specific deadlines.
  • Strategize for Later Rounds: Even if you don’t get a preferred seat now, subsequent rounds can bring opportunities, especially with added seats.

Final Word

The NEET UG 2025 counselling process is dynamic this year, with multiple schedule revisions, seat increases, and document-verification clarifications. For aspirants, this is both an opportunity and a challenge: with extra seats, there’s more flexibility, but the changing timelines demand vigilance.

Stay proactive, keep checking official updates, and fine-tune your counselling strategy accordingly to maximize your chances in the upcoming rounds.

NEET 2025 Cut-off for State Quota (85%)

State counselling bodies publish their own cut-offs for MBBS/BDS admissions. These vary based on:

How NEET Cut-off Impacts Counselling

Candidates who score equal to or higher than the NEET 2025 qualifying cut-off become eligible to:

·         Apply for deemed universities, central universities, AIIMS, and JIPMER

Higher scores increase chances of:

  • Getting a government MBBS seat
  • Admission in top-ranked medical colleges

  • When more seats are introduced, cut-off may lower slightly

NEET 2025 Cut-off for MBBS Abroad

Students applying to foreign medical universities (Russia, Philippines, Uzbekistan, Georgia, etc.) must also meet the NEET qualifying cut-off.

Validity: 3 years (for foreign admissions only)

NEET 2024 News and Updates: The NEET 2024 exam was conducted on May 5, 2024. The NEET 2024 admit card was released on May 2, 2024. NTA has stated that the NEET 2024 result will be declared on June 14, 2024.

The NEET 2024 city intimation slip was released on April 24, 2024. NTA reopened the NEET 2024 application correction facility for the third time from April 25 to April 26, 2024, 11.59 PM. Candidates could update or correct their photographs. According to NTA, some candidates' photographs are not as per the prescribed standard or format. Their NEET admit card may be withheld in case they are not as per the guidelines. Hence, this opportunity is given to them once again.

NTA rereleased the NEET 2024 application form on April 9, 2024. The last date to fill and submit the application form was April 10, 2024, by 10.50 PM. The application fee had to be paid by 11.50 PM on the same date. Announcing the reopening of the NEET 2024 application process, NTA has stated, “We have received various representations from stakeholders with a request to re-open the registration window of NEET-UG 2024. Based on the representation, it has been decided to re-open the Registration window of NEET-UG 2024.” After this, the NEET 2024 application correction window was opened from April 11 to April 15, 2024.

The NEET 2024 application form was originally released on February 9, 2024, and the last date of application was March 16, 2024. The NEET 2024 application correction window was open from March 18, 2024, to March 20, 2024. Only those candidates, who completed the NEET 2024 application process, are allowed to edit or make corrections in the selected fields of the application form.

NTA has reversed the tie-breaking criteria to last year's factors. In the revised criteria, the final factor was a computerised draw of lots, which replaced the subject-wise accuracy proportion of candidates, that was followed in the previous years.

As per the notification, NEET 2024 exam centres were not slated to be located outside India. However, as per the NTA announcement dated February 20, 2024, the exam will now be conducted in 14 international cities, like last year. The number of exam cities in India has increased from 499 to 554. The tie-breaking criteria have also been revised.

The NEET 2024 syllabus by NTA was released on November 22, as was reported earlier. The NTA syllabus for NEET 2024 is the same as that released earlier by the National Medical Council (NMC). No other information has been announced by NTA apart from the NEET syllabus 2024 PDF yet.

NMC has announced the revision of the NEET 2024 eligibility criteria. As per this, candidates who have studied Physics, Chemistry, Biology/Biotechnology and English as additional subjects are also eligible to appear for the exam. Till last year, applicants had to study these subjects as core papers for their Board exams in order to be eligible for the NEET exam.

The National Medical Commission (NMC) released the NEET 2024 syllabus earlier, which has removed some of the topics from the previous years in each subject, namely, Physics, Chemistry and Biology. On the other hand, some of the topics have been added as well. Unlike previous years, the NMC NEET UG syllabus 2024 is not segregated into Class 11 and Class 12 topics. On the other hand, the Chemistry subject has been divided into Organic, Inorganic and Physical Chemistry sections.

Given the fact that there is a major change in the NEET 2024 syllabus and the NEET 2024 eligibility criteria brought in by NMC, there was a chance that the NEET 2024 exam pattern could change, but it has remained the same. The information bulletin and the complete NEET 2024 notification were released along with the NEET 2024 application form.
