NEET UG: The NEET 2026 Exam (National Eligibility cum Entrance Test) is a single national-level entrance examination conducted for MBBS, BDS, BAMS, BHMS, BUMS, etc. courses for which more than 23,00,000 candidates register every year. 780 medical colleges participate in the NEET exam and offer a total of 1,18,148 MBBS seats.

NEET UG 2026 EXAM

The NEET UG 2026 Exam is expected to be held on May 3, 2026, in offline (pen-and-paper) mode. The National Testing Agency (NTA), which conducts the exam, is likely to release the official notification by the end of this year. As per previous trends, nearly 23 lakh students are anticipated to register for the NEET 2026 Exam. The application form is expected to be released in the first week of February 2026, and the test will be conducted in 13 languages across India.  Aspirants preparing for NEET 2026 can  explore details on exam dates, eligibility, registration, and preparation tips to stay ahead in their journey.

To appear for NEET UG 2026, candidates must have completed 10+2 with Science (PCB) and must be at least 17 years of age as of December 31, 2026. The official notification, including the application form, syllabus, and exam pattern, will be released on the NTA website — www.neet.nta.nic.in. Scoring well in NEET 2026 is crucial, as it determines admission to India’s top medical institutions and serves as a benchmark for aspiring doctors nationwide.

As per the Medical Counselling Committee (MCC), about 13.17 lakh candidates have already taken admission under the 15% All India Quota (AIQ) in the first three rounds of NEET Counselling 2025.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Education is carrying out a detailed study to check if NEET can be shifted to an online mode in the future. Officials have said that the NTA is exploring the idea of conducting the exam as a computer-based test, possibly held over multiple days and time slots. Reports also suggest that students may no longer get to choose their own exam city — instead, the NTA could assign it based on the address mentioned in the candidate’s Aadhaar Card.

WHAT IS NEET EXAM?

The National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) is India’s single national-level entrance exam for admission to undergraduate medical, dental, and paramedical courses such as MBBS, BDS, BSc Nursing, BAMS, BHMS, BUMS, and others offered by government and private colleges across the country.

The exam is organized by the National Testing Agency (NTA) once every year, usually in May, in offline (pen-and-paper) mode. NEET evaluates candidates on their understanding of Physics, Chemistry, and Biology (Botany & Zoology) based on the NCERT syllabus of Classes 11 and 12.

A good NEET score is crucial for securing admission to top medical colleges under the All India Quota (AIQ) and state quotas. It is also a mandatory qualification for students aspiring to pursue MBBS abroad. The test duration is 3 hours 20 minutes (200 minutes), during which candidates must attempt 180 out of 200 questions.

Conducted in 13 languages, NEET attracts over 20 lakh aspirants every year, making it one of the most competitive exams in India. Among the courses offered through NEET, MBBS remains the most sought-after, followed by BDS and BSc Nursing. Each year, the number of NEET applicants continues to rise, reflecting its growing importance in India’s medical education landscape.

NEET UG EXAM PATTERN

The NEET exam pattern has been significantly updated in recent years. As per the latest format, NEET will continue to be conducted as an offline, pen-and-paper (PBT) examination with a total duration of three hours. The question paper will include 180 mandatory multiple-choice questions, divided across the three subjects: 45 questions each in Physics and Chemistry, and 90 questions in Biology (Botany + Zoology).

Candidates must mark their answers on the OMR sheet by shading the appropriate circle using the blue or black ballpoint pen provided at the examination centre.

Below is the revised distribution of questions and marks:

Subject Number of Questions
Total Marks

Physics

45

180

Chemistry

45

180

Botany

45

180

Zoology

45

180

Total

180

720

The NTA has also confirmed that the earlier optional questions have now been removed, making all questions compulsory in NEET.

Impact of These Changes

  • Higher certainty / uniformity: Since all questions are now mandatory, there's less strategic choice or “guess which 5 to skip” — students must prepare more comprehensively.
  • Time pressure increased: With fewer minutes and all questions required, time management will be more challenging.
  • Reduced complexity in choice: Removing optional questions simplifies the structure.
  • More flexibility in exam city: Allowing three city choices could help students get a more convenient or nearer exam center.

NEET 2025 COUNSELLING

The NEET 2025 counselling process, conducted by the Medical Counselling Committee (MCC), began on July 21, 2025, and is expected to continue till November 20, 2025. However, this timeline is likely to be extended further as the choice filling deadline has been postponed, which may delay the final round seat allotment results.

The MCC has not yet released the revised counselling schedule. Initially, the entire process was scheduled to conclude by November 15, 2025.

Students who have qualified NEET 2025 by meeting or exceeding the cutoff marks are eligible to participate in the counselling process for admission to MBBS, BDS, and other medical courses across India.

The NEET 2026 counselling is conducted under two major categories:

  • 15% All India Quota (AIQ) – Counselling organized by the MCC.
  • 85% State Quota (SQ) – Counselling conducted by respective State Directorates of Medical Education (DME) or other designated state authorities.

Steps Involved in NEET Counselling Process:

  • Online Registration – Candidates must register on the official MCC or state counselling portal.
  • Choice Filling & Locking – Fill and lock preferred colleges and courses within the given time.
  • Seat Allotment Result – Seats are allotted based on NEET rank, preferences, and seat availability.
  • Reporting to the Allotted Institute – Candidates must confirm admission by reporting to the respective institute within the specified time frame.

Tip: Candidates should keep checking the official MCC website (mcc.nic.in) and respective state counselling portals regularly for updated schedules and announcements.

  • Marks obtained in Physics, Chemistry, and Biology
  • Total Marks
  • Percentile Score
  • All India Rank (AIR)
  • Category-wise rank (if applicable)
  • Cut-off status for eligibility

4. How to Calculate NEET Percentile

NEET percentile is calculated to indicate a candidate’s relative performance compared to all test-takers. The formula is:

NEET Percentile =( Number of candidates scoring less than you Total candidates )×100

Example:

If 1,50,000 Tamil Nadu candidates appeared and 1,20,000 scored less than a student:

1,20,0001,50,000×100=80%

Percentile is used to determine the All India Rank and eligibility for counselling under the NEET UG quota system.

5. Key Points to Remember

  • NEET results are declared only online; no physical copy is sent.
  • Scorecards are mandatory for participating in counselling and seat allotment.
  • Percentile scores, AIR, and category ranks are used to prepare the merit list.
  • Keep your application number and date of birth handy to avoid login issues.

NEET 2025 CUT-OFF

The NEET 2025 cut-off is the minimum score and percentile required to qualify for NEET UG exam for admissions to MBBS, BDS, AYUSH, and other medical programs.

NTA releases the category-wise cut-off along with the result and merit list. Only candidates who meet the cut-off criteria set by the National Testing Agency (NTA) are eligible to participate in NEET counselling for admissions into MBBS, BDS, BSc Nursing, and AYUSH programs across India.

  • The cut-off varies every year depending on exam difficulty, number of test-takers, and seat availability.
  • Candidates scoring above the cut-off become eligible for national and state-level counselling.
  • Separate cut-offs are announced for 15% AIQ, 85% State Quota, and NEET participating institutes.

Exam Patten Changes

NEET UG: The NEET 2026 Exam (National Eligibility cum Entrance Test) is a single national-level entrance examination conducted for MBBS, BDS, BAMS, BHMS, BUMS, etc. courses for which more than 23,00,000 candidates register every year. 780 medical colleges participate in the NEET exam and offer a total of 1,18,148 MBBS seats.

NEET UG Exam Pattern Changes — What’s New (2025 & beyond)

The NEET UG exam pattern has undergone notable revisions recently as the National Testing Agency (NTA) realigns the structure of India’s medical entrance test to a more streamlined and standardized format. These changes were first officially introduced for NEET UG 2025 and are expected to continue into NEET UG 2026 and future years.

 1. Reversion to Pre-COVID Format

The most significant change in the NEET UG pattern is a return to the pre-COVID question format. In earlier editions (during the pandemic), the question paper included optional questions allowing candidates some choice in what to attempt. However:

  • Section B (optional questions) has been completely removed.
  • All questions are now compulsory for every candidate.

This move restores the traditional structure and ensures that every student faces the same set of questions without having optional choices.

 2. Total Number of Questions

Under the new pattern:

  • The paper consists of 180 compulsory questions, divided as:
    • Physics – 45 questions
    • Chemistry – 45 questions
    • Biology – 90 questions (Botany & Zoology combined)

Previously, the paper had 200 questions with optional question subsets, which allowed students to skip some parts.

3. Exam Duration Reduced

The total exam duration has been reduced in accordance with the removal of optional questions:

  • Total Duration: 180 minutes (3 hours)
This is shorter than the earlier 200 minutes (3 hours 20 minutes) format, aligning the total time with the reduced number of questions

Students now have an average of one minute per question, making time management more critical.

4. No Sectional Bifurcation

The exam no longer uses the Section A / Section B structure seen in previous editions. Instead:

  • Each subject now has one unified section.
  • There is no optional subset to strategize around.

This simplifies navigation and ensures more uniform evaluation.

5. Why These Changes Matter

These updates are intended to:

Eliminate guesswork and optional shortcuts — all students now attempt the same compulsory questions.
Level the playing field — reducing variability due to optional sections.
Simplify test design — easier standardization for marking and evaluation.
Focus preparation — students must cover the entire syllabus thoroughly.

In conclusion, the recent NEET UG exam pattern changes mark a clear shift towards a more standardized, transparent, and merit-based testing system. By removing optional questions and reverting to the pre-COVID format, the National Testing Agency (NTA) has ensured that all candidates attempt the same set of compulsory questions, creating a level playing field for evaluation. The reduction in exam duration and the fixed number of questions encourage better time management and complete syllabus coverage, leaving no scope for selective preparation. Overall, these changes simplify the exam structure, enhance fairness, and place greater emphasis on conceptual clarity and consistent preparation, making NEET UG more aligned with its objective of assessing genuine medical aptitude.

The NEET UG Eligibility Criteria – Qualification Codes are a set of official codes prescribed by the National Testing Agency (NTA) that indicate a candidate’s educational qualification status at the time of applying for the exam. While filling out the NEET UG application form, every applicant must select one appropriate code that correctly represents whether they are appearing for Class 12, have already passed Class 12, hold a B.Sc. degree, or possess an equivalent Indian or foreign qualification. These codes help NTA verify academic eligibility uniformly and ensure that candidates from different education systems are assessed under a common framework. Choosing the correct qualification code is crucial, as any mismatch between the selected code and the actual qualification can lead to disqualification during document verification or counselling, even if the candidate qualifies the NEET UG examination.

NEET UG Preparation 2026 – All India Overview

Preparing for NEET UG 2026 requires a focused, disciplined, and NCERT-centric strategy, as admissions to MBBS, BDS, AYUSH, Veterinary, and allied medical courses across India are based entirely on NEET UG scores conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA). With intense national-level competition and limited government seats, aspirants must build strong conceptual clarity, consistent practice habits, and long-term preparation covering Class 11 and Class 12 syllabi.

To succeed in NEET UG 2026, students must strictly follow the NMC/NTA-prescribed syllabus derived from NCERT textbooks. The exam is highly NCERT-driven, with questions directly framed from definitions, diagrams, tables, reactions, formulas, and examples. Since Biology carries the highest weightage (90 questions – 360 marks), mastering NCERT Biology is crucial, while Physics and Chemistry require deep conceptual understanding and regular numerical/problem-based practice to maintain accuracy and speed.

Solving previous years’ NEET question papers, chapter-wise tests, and full-length mock exams is essential to understand exam patterns, difficulty level, and frequently repeated concepts. Regular mock testing improves time management, question selection, accuracy, and exam temperament, which are critical for scoring 600+ marks and securing a strong All India Rank (AIR).

Understanding the NEET UG counselling process—including AIQ (15%) counselling by MCC, state quota (85%) counselling, reservation policies, cut-off trends, and seat distribution—helps aspirants set realistic score targets and make informed college choices. Staying updated with NTA notifications, result timelines, counselling schedules, and document requirements is equally important to avoid missing key deadlines.

  • Reference + Practice Combo: For each subject, pick one reference/theory book (like Verma for Physics or Tandon for Chemistry) and one MCQ/practice book (like Pandey, Dinesh, MTG).
  • Consistent PYQ Practice: Solve previous years’ NEET papers and MCQ banks regularly. They help you understand the pattern and question style.
  • Revision: Use revision-focused books (like “Fingertips” books) as the exam nears to quickly review important points.
  • Time Management: Don’t try to read too many books — quality over quantity works best. Stick to a few trusted titles.

Common Advice & Pitfalls

  • Many top tutors and NEET toppers emphasize not overloading on reference books — having 2–3 good ones is more effective than many average ones.
  • Avoid books that are too advanced or not aligned with the NEET syllabus (especially for Inorganic Chemistry or super-high-level physics) unless you really have mastering concepts and lots of time.

Practice / Objective Books (with MCQs)

Here are some MCQ-style or problem-based books specifically suited for exam-style practice:

  • Arihant DC Pandey Objective Physics
    • Great for practicing NEET-style physics problems and MCQs.
  • Fundamental Problems in Organic Chemistry (NEET)
    • Challenging problem set for organic chemistry — very useful for mastering mechanism-based questions.
  • Objective Biology for NEET, Vol. 1
    • Good for lots of biology practice, especially MCQs in botany & zoology.
  • Super 10 Mock Tests – NEET UG (PCB)
    • Mock test book simulating NEET exam pattern — useful for timed practice and revision.
  • 35 Years NTA NEET UG Chemistry – Solved Papers
    • Past exam questions (topic-wise) — helpful for understanding trends and practicing PYQs.
  • 36 Years NEET Biology – Chapterwise Solutions
    • Biology PYQs with solutions — great for deepening understanding and revision.
  • Essential Physics, Chemistry & Biology
    • A compact “all-in-one” book for quick theory + formula review.
  • 40 Days Crash Course – NEET Biology
    • Designed for last-minute revision with a structured 40-day plan.

Why These Are Very Useful for NEET 2026

  • These books cover both theory and practice, tailored to the NEET syllabus.
  • They are either 2025 editions or very recently updated — meaning the content aligns better with the current NEET syllabus and exam pattern.
  • They mix NCERT-based study (very important for NEET) with higher-level problem solving, which helps aspirants target a high score.
  • There’s a good balance: reference books, MCQ books, PYQ collections, and mock test papers — exactly what you need for a robust NEET prep strategy.

NEET UG BooksFAQs

1. Which are the best reference books for NEET UG preparation?

The most recommended reference books include NCERT Class 11 & 12 textbooks for all subjects, along with standard guides like HC Verma (Physics), MTG & Dinesh (Biology), and O.P. Tandon (Chemistry).

Admit Card – NEET UG 2025 (All India)

The NEET UG 2025 admit card will be released online by the National Testing Agency (NTA) a few days before the examination. The NEET UG 2025 exam is scheduled to be held on May 4, 2025, and the admit card is a mandatory document that every candidate must carry to the examination centre. Without a valid admit card, no candidate will be allowed to enter the exam hall or appear for the test.

Before releasing the final admit card, NTA will issue the NEET 2025 exam city intimation slip, expected toward the end of April 2025. This slip will inform candidates about the city of their allotted examination centre. It is not an admit card, but only an advance notice to help students plan travel and accommodation arrangements.

Once the admit card is officially released, NEET UG aspirants across India can download it from the official NTA NEET website by logging in with their application number, date of birth, and password. The admit card will contain important details such as:

  • Candidate’s name
  • Roll number
  • Photograph and signature
  • Exam date and timing
  • Complete address of the examination centre
  • Important exam-day instructions

Only candidates who have successfully completed the NEET UG 2025 application process will be issued the admit card. If any discrepancies are found in personal details, exam centre information, or photographs/signatures, candidates must immediately contact NTA for correction before the examination date.

Candidates are advised to preserve the NEET UG admit card carefully, as it will be required not only on the exam day but also during counselling, document verification, and admission procedures for MBBS, BDS, AYUSH, and other medical courses at both All India Quota and State Quota levels.

  • Time pressure increased: With fewer minutes and all questions required, time management will be more challenging.
  • Reduced complexity in choice: Removing optional questions simplifies the structure.
  • More flexibility in exam city: Allowing three city choices could help students get a more convenient or nearer exam center.

NEET UG 2025 Counselling Update

NEET UG 2025 counselling, conducted by the Medical Counselling Committee (MCC), is currently underway for MBBS, BDS, and allied courses. Several important developments have emerged — from schedule revisions to the addition of new medical seats — that every aspirant needs to know. Below is the latest on what’s happening, key dates, and what you should do next.

Key Updates & Developments

1.  Round 1 Suspension & Rescheduling

  • The choice-filling and locking facility for Round 1 was temporarily suspended by MCC.
  • A revised schedule is expected; candidates are advised to keep checking the MCC portal for updates.
  • During this pause, MCC has asked participating institutes to re-verify their tentative seat matrices to ensure accuracy.

2.  Extended Registration for Round 1

  • MCC has extended the Round 1 registration window to July 31, 2025, giving candidates more time to complete their applications.
  • Important: Payment and locking choices deadlines are aligned with this extension.

3.  Round 2 Commencement & Additional Seats

  • Round 2 officially began on August 29, 2025.
  • Significantly, 197 new medical seats have been added by the National Medical Commission (NMC) and integrated into the Round 2 seat matrix.
  • Because of these new seats, MCC has extended the choice-filling window so candidates can reconsider and update their preferences.

4.  Revised Round 2 Timeline

  • Registration for Round 2: September 4 – September 9, 2025.
  • Choice filling: September 5 – September 9, 2025
  • Choice locking: September 9, 2025 (from 4:00 PM to 11:55 PM)
  • Seat allotment results for Round 2 will be out on September 17, 2025.
  • Reporting / Joining period for allotted candidates: September 18 – September 25, 2025.

5.  Round 3 Updates

  • MCC released a revised schedule for Round 3, following further updates to the seat matrix.
  • For Round 3, choice-filling deadline has been extended to October 16, 2025 (4 PM).
  • The seat allotment result for Round 3 is scheduled for October 18, 2025.

6.  NRI & Document-Verification Developments

  • MCC continues to scrutinize NRI documentation alongside the counselling process.
  • There is a noted interim relief for some NRI-quota candidates: those with valid embassy-endorsed affidavits made before July 25, 2025, may now be eligible again, subject to detailed verification.

What This Means for You

  • Stay Updated: Because the schedule has changed multiple times, it’s crucial to regularly check the official MCC website.
  • Revisit Your Choices: If you already locked preferences, revisit them — the addition of new seats might open up better or different options.
  • Prepare Documents: Make sure your verification documents (NRI certificates, ID proofs, NEET scorecard, etc.) are ready to submit as required.
  • Resignation Option: If you weren’t satisfied with your Round 1 allotment, note that resignation windows have specific deadlines.
  • Strategize for Later Rounds: Even if you don’t get a preferred seat now, subsequent rounds can bring opportunities, especially with added seats.

Final Word

The NEET UG 2025 counselling process is dynamic this year, with multiple schedule revisions, seat increases, and document-verification clarifications. For aspirants, this is both an opportunity and a challenge: with extra seats, there’s more flexibility, but the changing timelines demand vigilance.

Stay proactive, keep checking official updates, and fine-tune your counselling strategy accordingly to maximize your chances in the upcoming rounds.

NEET UG Application form Overview

The NEET UG application form is the mandatory online registration process conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA) for candidates seeking admission to undergraduate medical courses such as MBBS, BDS, AYUSH, BSc Nursing, and other allied health programmes across India. The application process usually begins in February and is completed entirely online through the official NTA NEET portal. Candidates must first register using a valid email ID and mobile number, after which they fill in detailed personal information (name, date of birth, gender, nationality, category, and identity proof), academic details (Class 10 and Class 12 board, year of passing, subjects studied, and marks), and exam-related preferences such as choice of exam city and medium of question paper. Applicants are required to upload scanned copies of their passport-size photograph, signature, and other prescribed documents in the specified format and size. After completing all sections, candidates must pay the application fee online using debit card, credit card, net banking, or UPI, and finally submit the form. Once submitted, a confirmation page is generated, which serves as proof of successful application and must be downloaded and preserved for future stages such as admit card download and counselling. NTA also provides a correction window for a limited period, allowing candidates to edit specific details in the application form. Only those candidates who successfully submit the NEET UG application form within the deadline become eligible to appear for the NEET UG examination and participate in subsequent counselling processes at the national and state levels.

Application form Correction Window

The NEET UG application form correction window is a facility provided by the National Testing Agency (NTA) that allows candidates to rectify mistakes made while filling out the application form. This correction window is usually opened after the application submission deadline, generally for a short period of 2–4 days, and candidates can access it by logging in to the official NEET UG portal using their application number and password/date of birth. During this period, candidates are permitted to edit select fields only, such as personal details (name, date of birth, gender), category, sub-category (PwBD), nationality, exam city choices, educational details, and uploaded images (photograph, signature). In some cases, changing certain fields like category or exam city may require payment of an additional fee if the revised details attract a higher application fee. However, key details such as registered mobile number and email ID cannot be changed under any circumstances. Once the correction window closes, no further changes are allowed, and the final submitted form is treated as binding for admit card issuance and counselling. Therefore, candidates are strongly advised to carefully review all details and use the correction window wisely to avoid disqualification or issues during the admission process.

Mistakes and Tips

NEET UG: The NEET 2026 Exam (National Eligibility cum Entrance Test) is a single national-level entrance examination conducted for MBBS, BDS, BAMS, BHMS, BUMS, etc. courses for which more than 23,00,000 candidates register every year. 780 medical colleges participate in the NEET exam and offer a total of 1,18,148 MBBS seats.

While filling out the NEET UG application form, candidates often make a few common mistakes that can lead to rejection, delays, or problems during counselling. One of the most frequent errors is uploading incorrect or unclear photographs, signatures, or thumb impressions, especially images that do not meet the prescribed size, format, or background requirements. Mismatches in personal details such as the candidate’s name, date of birth, parents’ names, or gender when compared with Class 10 certificates and ID proof can also create serious issues later. Many applicants mistakenly select the wrong category, PwBD status, or eligibility option, assuming it can be corrected easily, which may affect reservation benefits during counselling. Errors in choosing the exam city preferences, incomplete form submission, unsuccessful fee payment, or failure to download and preserve the confirmation page are also common problems faced by candidates.

To avoid these mistakes, candidates should carefully read the official NTA information bulletin before starting the application and keep all documents ready in advance. It is important to upload recent, clear, and correctly sized images, enter details exactly as mentioned in official records, and double-check category and eligibility information before final submission. Applicants should complete the form well before the last date to avoid server issues and allow time for corrections if needed. Saving login credentials, payment receipts, and multiple printouts of the confirmation page is strongly advised. Following these tips ensures a smooth NEET UG application process and reduces the risk of errors that could affect admission later.

Common mistakes made while filling the NEET UG application form

  • Uploading photographs, signatures, or thumb impressions that do not match the prescribed size, format, background, or clarity guidelines
  • Using old, blurred, or edited photographs, which may lead to application rejection
  • Entering incorrect personal details such as name, date of birth, gender, or parents’ names that do not match Class 10 certificates
  • Selecting the wrong category (General/SC/ST/OBC/EWS) or PwBD status without valid supporting documents
  • Choosing an incorrect nationality or eligibility option, especially by NRI or foreign candidates
  • Providing wrong academic details, including board name, year of passing, or marks
  • Making errors in exam centre or city preferences
  • Leaving mandatory fields incomplete or skipping required uploads
  • Facing failed or incomplete fee payment and assuming the application is submitted successfully
  • Not downloading or saving the application confirmation page and payment receipt
  • Waiting until the last date to fill the form, leading to technical or server-related issues
  • Forgetting to check details again during the correction window, missing the chance to rectify error

Important tips for filling the NEET UG application form

Read the official NTA NEET UG information bulletin carefully before starting the application

  • Keep all required documents scanned and ready in the prescribed format and file size
  • Upload recent, clear photographs, signature, and thumb/finger impressions exactly as per guidelines
  • Enter personal details (name, date of birth, parents’ names, gender) strictly as mentioned in the Class 10 certificate
  • Select the correct category, PwBD status, and nationality only if you have valid supporting documents
  • Double-check academic details such as board name, year of passing, and marks before submission
  • Choose exam city preferences carefully and realistically
  • Complete the application well before the last date to avoid server or payment issues
  • Ensure successful fee payment and save the transaction receipt
