For admissions to ME and MTech programmes offered by university departments and government engineering colleges, the university conducts the Common Engineering Entrance Test and Admissions (CEETA). Over 35,000 candidates appeared for TANCET and CEETA combined last year, underlining the significance of these examinations in the state’s higher education admission cycle.
Background: Usual Schedule and Current Concerns
In the past few years, Anna University has conducted these entrance examinations in March to address declining enrolment in postgraduate (PG) engineering courses across university departments and government engineering colleges. Traditionally, the official notification for the exams is released in January.
However, this year, aspirants expressed concern as the notification had not been issued by the end of the third week of February. Students reportedly sought clarity on the schedule and requested that the examination be shifted to May.
According to university sources, Anna University received formal feedback from candidates demanding a postponement. Subsequently, the university submitted a proposal to the state government seeking approval to conduct TANCET and CEETA in May.
An official from the university stated that eighth semester results are expected to be published in May or June. Students have argued that they were uncertain about the conduct of the entrance test in March, prompting the request for deferment.
Possible Reasons for Postponement
Some professors indicated that the upcoming Assembly elections could be one of the reasons behind the plan to shift the examination schedule. If conducted in May, the entrance tests are likely to take place about a week after the final semester examinations.
Academics have also noted that by May, deemed universities would have largely completed their admission processes. This could potentially impact enrolment trends in university departments and government engineering colleges.
Concerns from Private Institutions
Private college representatives have expressed reservations about postponing the exam. They argue that conducting TANCET in March ensures adequate time for completing MBA, ME, and MTech admissions in a timely manner.
B. Chidambararajan, Director of SRM Valliammai Engineering College, stated that delaying the entrance examination to May could consequently delay the entire PG admission process across the state.
CEETA-PG Introduction and Its Scope
In 2023, Anna University introduced the CEETA-PG examination specifically for ME and MTech admissions. The exam applies to courses offered in:
- University departments
- Regional campuses
- Constituent colleges
- Government engineering colleges
- Government-aided engineering colleges
The move was aimed at streamlining postgraduate engineering admissions and ensuring a uniform selection process across affiliated institutions.
What This Means for Aspirants
If the state government approves the proposal, aspirants can expect the TANCET and CEETA examinations to be conducted in May, providing additional preparation time. However, any delay may also push back counselling schedules and final admissions for MBA, MCA, ME, and MTech programmes.
Students are advised to regularly check official announcements from Anna University for confirmation regarding revised dates and notification details.
