ABOUT THE UNIVERSITY

The Thiruvalluvar University was established in Vellore district of Tamilnadu by the Government of Tamilnadu in October 2002 under the Thiruvalluvar University Act, 2002. (Government of Tamilnadu Act 32/2002). The University was named after the great Tamil Saint poet “Thiruvalluvar”. The University is located in a sprawling campus of about 112.68 acres at the Serkkadu near Vallimalai about sixteen km away from the Vellore City on the Ranipet-Chittoor Trunk Road.

It is a member of the Association of Indian Universities (A.I.U.).

In the University, every effort is harnessed to make Educational Institution as temple of learning. The aim of this University is to provide facilities for advancement in Research and dissemination of knowledge with a special focus on the economic and social upliftment of the marginalised who live in the four districts a viz Vellore, Thiruvannamalai, Villupuram and Cuddalore which are economically, socially, educationally and geographically backward districts wherein majority of the people live in rural areas with abject poverty. Especially the Vellore district comprises a thick population of Adivasis and Scheduled Tribes who are yet to attain empowerment in higher education. The University to provide for research and for the advancement and dissemination of knowledge with a focus on the economic and social upliftment of oppressed classes including Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, Most Backward Classes, Denotified Communities, and Backward Classes.

ADMISSION :

Thiruvalluvar University Application Process :

Application forms can be downloaded from the University official website.

Application can also be obtained from the Registrar, Thiruvalluvar University, Vellore-632 115.

The application fee of Rs.200/- (Rs.100/- for SC/ST) in the form of DD along with Self attested copies of mark statements of the qualifying examination and filled-in application form should be sent directly to “The Registrar, Thiruvalluvar University, Serkadu, Vellore – 632 115 with superscription on the top of the cover as “Application for admission to University Department”.

Attach a self addressed 24x12cm envelope Rs.20/- stamped along with filled-in application.

The process should be remitted through NEFT/RTGS mode in the Indian Overseas Bank with the numbers given below and the original bank challan with UTR number should be enclosed with the application form.

For admission, the candidates have to sit for an entrance exam. The exam is conducted by the University in the respective departments of Thiruvalluvar University, Serkkadu, Vellore-115.

Degree holders from other University need to obtain the Admission Approval Eligibility Certificate from this University for registration. The admission list shall be placed in University and also published in the official University website within two week's time from the date of admission. Thiruvalluvar University MA and M.Sc Admission

The University runs a two-years Master's degree course in Arts and Science stream. The Arts stream has three specializations and Science stream has four specializations to choose from. The admission is done on the basis of entrance exam along with qualified examination marks, divided equally for the preparation of final merit list for various courses.

Thiruvalluvar University M.Phil and Ph.D Admission

The University runs research course with various specialisation in the field of M.Phil and Ph.D. The maximum period for completion of the M.Phil., programme is two years in the case of Full-time candidates, and three years in the case of Part-Time candidates. Whereas, for Ph.D, the maximum completion period is five years for full time candidates and for six years for part time candidates.There are three categories of Ph.D., research scholars:

Full-Time Research Scholars (with or without stipend or fellowship)

Part-Time Research Scholars (teacher or non-teacher; internal vis-a-vis external)

The admission for both the courses shall made on the basis of the marks obtained by the candidates in qualifying examination and marks scored in the Entrance Test followed by viva-voce/ interview.

The students who have scored qualified marks in UGC/CSIR (JRF) Examination / SLET/GATE / teacher fellowship holder are exempted from the entrance test of M.Phil full time course admission.

Whereas, in case of Ph.D admission, the students who qualify UGC/CSIR (JRF) Examination NET/SLET/GATE and teacher fellowship holders are exempted from the proposed entrance examination but they need to sit for an interview which is of 60 marks.

Key points to note for part time programme

Candidates should enclose the “Service Certificate” and an eligible “No objection Certificate” along with the application form for admission.

For M.Phil Admission, the first preference will be given to teachers working in the College affiliated to this University and in the Department of this University. Service certificates of the teachers should be issued by the Principal of the college / Polytechnic or Headmaster of the Schools of any category.

If non-lab oriented subjects are available in the affiliated colleges, the candidates may be registered for the non-lab oriented subjects only.

The candidates who have secured lesser than 55% (except SC/ST) of marks and got admitted for M.Phil.,are not eligible for teaching positions as per UGC and State Government Norms.

PLACEMENT’S CELL

The Placement Cell acts as a platform that bridges the industry and the students of the University. The Cell aids in organizing campus recruitment drives for job offers across various sectors. It liaisons with the industry for internship opportunities for the students. In addition, counselling is offered to students, regarding placements and higher education abroad. The unit also organizes leadership and training programmes whenever necessary.

Scholarship

The selection shall be based on the marks obtained in the Basic qualifying examinations 50% and the Entrance Examination 50% of marks. Numbers of seats are limited to each department offering the courses and selections are based on the Reservation Policy prescribed by the Govt. of Tamil Nadu.

OC  - Open Competition  - 31%

BC  - Backward Classes  including 3.5% for Muslims - 30%

MBC - Most Backward Classes and Denotified Communities (DNC) - 20%

SC - Scheduled Castes  including 3% for Arunthathiyars - 18%

ST - Scheduled Tribes - 1%

3% in each of the above categories for Physically Handicapped.

Key points to be noted:

Candidates from other states other than Tamil Nadu shall be considered under OC except SC/ST candidates.

Along with the regular selection list, separate waiting lists under each quota shall be prepared and placed in the notice board.

Vacancy arising under BC category should be filled only with other communities.

Vacancy arising under BC (Muslim) and MBC & DNC category should be filled only with BC candidates.

Vacancy arising under SC/ST category should be filled only with MBC / DNC candidates

Vacancy arising under ST category should be filled only with SC candidates.

Library

Thiruvalluvar University Central Library is an area of 10526 Sq.feet. The Seating capacity is about 150 and It has collection of text and reference books, journals, M.Phil. Dissertations and Ph.D Theses on various disciplines. Library has various sections such as Reference Section, Textbook Section, Theses/ Dissertations and E-resources section, Library caters to information needs of Students, Research Scholars and Staff Members of our university and affiliated colleges. Computers and Internet connectivity is there to access e-resources to the full fill the requirements of the Students, Research Scholars and Faculty Members of our university and affiliated colleges.

Wi-Fi

WIFI facilities are provided inside and outside of the library premises for benefit of research scholars to access and download their academic requirements through Web. “Our Moto is to satisfy the user community”.

Sports

The college students realize that 'ALL WORK AND NO PLAY CREATES THE DULLEST OF ENGINEERS'. That's why students lay a lot of emphasis on physical fitness and Sports. At college, We have one of the most comprehensive sports facilities. And our students are encouraged to actively take part in all sporting activities. In fact, our students have earned the college several laurels and accolades in national and state-level sports competitions. Students of this college have achieved remarkable feats as Winners and Runners-up ranging from the Inter-collegiate to University level in games and athletic events and have retained the championship in the University Division. Every year, we celebrate the “College Day” function for honoring the best sports students. Many of the students have won medals and cash prizes in Throw Ball, Volley Ball, Table Tennis, Chess, Boxing, Swimming, Judo, Kabaddi, and Foot Ball.

The College Inside the sprawling campus of the College there is One Canteen that functions well to serve the students and staff members.

Auditorium

The College firmly believes in providing its student's exposure to national and international knowledge experts, through regular national and international conferences/symposia and workshops hosted on campus. It is with this view that a wide choice of modern conference facilities has been meticulously planned and incorporated into the campus. Mahatma Gandhi Auditorium is provided with a centralized A/C with effective audio and lighting system. It is newly constructed, furnished with a digital surround system, and fully air-conditioned. It is a highly sophisticated hall, which can hold up to 1400 students. This auditorium adds feathers to our cap. This auditorium is used for various events and programs.
