College of Veterinary Science (CVS) Khanapara
The College of Veterinary Science was established in year 1948 at Nagaon as the erstwhile Assam Veterinary College introducing a 3-year Diploma course (Graduate in Vetrinary Science - GVSc) with 33 students in the first batch.
In 1950, the College was shifted to the premises of the Directorate of Veterinary Services, Govt. of Assam at Chenikuthi, Guwahati.
In the 1951 the GVSc Diploma course was extended to ICAR’s model syllabus of 4-Year Bachelor of Veterinary Science & Animal Husbandry (B.V.Sc. & A.H.) degree program under the affiliation of Guwahati University, while concurrently continuing admission to the G.V.Sc course.
In 1960, the College was shifted to its present location at Khanapara, Guwahati and the duration of B.V.Sc & A.H degree program was made 5 years with an increase in the intake capacity from 33 to 65.
In 1969, with the establishment of Assam Agricultural University (AAU) the college, along with all physical facilities and manpower, was transferred to the AAU as one of its constituent colleges and it was renamed as College of Veterinary Science.
In 1977, Semester System of education replaced the Trimester System and in the year 1982, the intake capacity to B.V.Sc. & A.H. course was again increased to 130 from 90, and subsequently to 150 in 1985. Out of the total of 14 departments existing at that stage, 12 departments started Ph.D. degree program by the year 1985. Academic Regulations and syllabus as prescribed by the Veterinary Council of India for the B.V.Sc. & A.H. degree program were adopted by AAU in 1995. The increased realization of the importance of the veterinary profession coupled with the man power need to handle the veterinary and animal husbandry activities of the region was the driving force in the growth and development of this institution that was to follow in the coming decades. Since then the institute has grown leaps and bound in the past.
The College of Veterinary Science is located on GS Rd, Khanapara, Guwahati, Assam.
CVS, Khanapara is affiliated to Assam Agriculture University (AAU) and has the approval of Veterinary Council of India.
Presently, College of Veterinary Science, Khanapura is offering UG, PG and Doctorate programs in Veterinary Science and Animal Husbandry. The number of students enrolled in the first year B.V.Sc. & A.H. degree each year is100 and enrolment capacity of each department in M.V.Sc. and Ph.D. degree program is 10 and 4, respectively.
The College of Veterinary Science, Khanapura provides adequate Infrastructure with Auditorium, Training cum Lecture Hall, Cafeteria, Computer Labs with latest S/W and H/W, Library, Medical facilities, Sports facilities, 24-hr high-speed Internet connectivity, A Power back up with one 20 KV UPS and three 5 KV UPS.
Besides imparting teaching with the help of well-experienced and highly qualified Faculty, the institute carries out Field oriented research in Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Sciences, and also provides Extension Services to the farmers with the aim of Technology Transfer. The college also provides expert services to the State Government departments of the entire North Eastern region of the country, primarily in formulation of developmental plans and policies in Animal Husbandry sector. It also provides expert services in Management and Healthcare of wildlife in State Zoos, Sanctuaries and National Parks of the region. The institute strives for Human Resource Development to cater to the needs of the farmers and breeders for bringing about sustainable improvement in the livestock and Poultry Production through improved Breeding, Feeding, Management and Health care.
Central Instruments Facilities (CIF) is a major service centre of the College of Veterinary Science, Assam Agricultural University, the creation of which is a land mark in the Veterinary Faculty. Establishment of CIF was a long felt demand to fulfill the research need of multiple Departments and research workers of the institute. The CIF has various sophisticated instruments, which cater to the cutting-edge research in many areas of modern Science and Technology. Development of this infrastructure will provide opportunity to the scientists/research workers to carryout high quality research and could generate authentic research data. With these infrastructure facilities, faculty members can avail financial support from various funding agencies.

B.V.Sc - Bachelor of Veterinary Science [BVSc] & A.H
10 +2 Examination passed or appeared candidates having the Certificates of Permanent Residence of Assam and wards of defense/para-military personnel posted in the State of Assam for at least one year
A candidate under General category shall have to qualify in each of the subjects of English, Physics, Chemistry and Biology, and obtained 50% marks in aggregate of these subjects at 10+2. Candidates belonging to Scheduled Caste or Scheduled Tribe or other special category of students as specified by the Government from time to time must secure 47.5%.
A candidate shall not be allowed admission if he or she suffers the following disabilities:
(a) disability of total body including disability of chestorspine more than 50 %
(b) disability of lower limb of more than 50 %
(c) disability of upper limb
(d) visually handicapped candidates and those with hearing disability
(e) candidates with progressive diseases like myopathies etc.
(f) Disabilities which otherwise would interfere in the performance of the duties of a veterinarian.
Sponsored candidates from foreign country under Bilateral/Multilateral Agreement and NRI/NRI Sponsored candidates shall be exempted from appearing in the VET provided that they meet the minimum Eligibility requirement in force.
You must have completed the minimum age of 17 years and the maximum age of 25 years
Admission to Bachelor of Veterinary Science & Animal Husbandry Degree Course in Government or Private Colleges shall only be on the basis of merit through a competitive entrance examination conducted by University or State Government or Veterinary Council of India

Presently, the college has 18 departments, one library and a number of instructional as well as research farms (cattle, buffalo, pig, goat and poultry). There are 5 boys’ hostels and 2 girls’ hostels, a multipurpose sports complex and a medical unit catering to the residential needs of the students and the faculty. Another girls’ hostel is under construction. As on January 2007, the strength of teachers (excluding those under Directorates of Research, Extension Education and Students’ Welfare) is 139 and the total number of UG students is 602.
The college has a Directorate of Clinics with a full-fledged Veterinary Hospital (Teaching Veterinary Hospital). Besides providing yeoman services to the farmers by way of treating their animals, it also provides hands-on practical training to the students on clinical disciplines. Under the Dean’s establishment, the college also has an ARIS (Agricultural Research Information System) Cell, which provides the teachers and the students an easy access to information through 24-hr Internet connectivity. Under the ARIS cell, there is a central server and a faculty LAN connecting computers of different departments. A Bioinformatics Infrastructure Facility (BIF) is in the process of establishment in the faculty with the financial assistance from Department of Biotechnology (DBT), Govt. of India. The National Bureau of Animal Genetic Resources, ICAR has also offered a Core Laboratory for genetic characterization of livestock biodiversity of the North-East.
