Government College of Engineering, Tirunelveli is a state-owned co-educational Engineering institute located in Tamil Nadu, established in the year 1981. Tirunelveli is often referred as the 'Oxford of south India' due to the large number of educational institutions present. This college was started in October 1981 to fulfill the educational needs of the youth of this region, who otherwise had to go to Madurai or further away to pursue their engineering studies. Thus, with the starting of this college, one of the long time educational expectations of the people of this area came to be fulfilled.
GCE Tirunelveli campus is ideally located in an extent of 55 acres of land, about 1 km from Tirunelveli new bus stand. The college campus lies on the Tirunelveli - Trivandrum national highway.
Government College of Engineering, Tirunelveli is approved by the All India Council for Technical Education - AICTE and department of Technical Education - DOTE. It is affiliated to Anna University, Chennai.
GCE, Tirunelveli offers both Full Time and Part Time Undergraduate (B.Tech) and Full Time Postgraduate (M.Tech) courses. The duration period for the B.E/B.Tech courses is four years. The institute also provides a lateral entry in the B.E/B.Tech second year for which the course duration is three years. The syllabus and curriculum has been structured by Anna University, Chennai. Admission to the UG courses is done through Tamil Nadu Engineering Admission (TNEA) whereas, for admission to the postgraduate courses, candidates need to appear in TANCET (Tamil Nadu Common Entrance Test). GCE Tirunelveli provides admission to undergraduate and postgraduate courses. Government College of Engineering Tirunelveli admission to the B.Tech courses will be done on the basis of the marks secured in the 10+2 examination. Further, the selected students have to appear for a TNEA counselling. admission to the M.Tech programmes will be based on the marks obtained in the TANCET/GATE examination. Further, the candidates have to appear for a TANCA counselling session. GCE Tirunelveli Admission Process for UG Courses
The college offers a total of 7 undergraduate courses out of which 5 courses are offered in full-time mode and 2 courses are offered in part-time mode. The duration of the courses is 4 years and is divided into 8 semesters.

GCE Tirunelveli B.Tech Admission Process
First, candidates have to meet the eligibility criteria.
Second, DOTE will prepare a merit list and the cutoff will be released based on the marks of Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics in 10+2.
Third, candidates have to register for a TNEA counselling.
Fourth, students have to give preference to GCE Tirunelveli and seats will be allotted based on merit, category of the candidates and preference filled.
