History
Bhavnagar is not a very old city - it was founded in 1723 when the then ruler Bhavsinhji shifted his capital from Sihor (20 Kms. away) to Bhavsinh GohilBhavnagar. The Gohil Dynasty itself is quite itself is quite old. They were in Sihor since 1570 and in Umrala/Ghogha and other places prior to that. It is said that their ancestors were from Marwar.

Admission Eligibility and Procedure
Eligibility:
The candidate must be of 17 years or above as on 31st December of the enrolment year. The candidate must be a graduate of a Higher Secondary School with 10+2 degree in science stream with Biology (or bio-technology) along with Physics and Chemistry as their subject. Minimum 50% marks are eligible (40% in case of SC/ST and 45% for OBC Category).
Admission Procedure:
It is a compulsion for a medical aspirant to appear in National Eligibility and Entrance Examination (NEET) which is conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA) after graduating 12th grade. The selections in all the government, central, private and deemed colleges are based on the NEET scores. The seats for all medical Institutions/Colleges/universities are offered via counselling based on the fulfilment of eligibility Score/Rank, preferences of colleges and seats available. There will be multiple rounds of counselling viz. round-1, Round-2, Mop Up round and Stray Rounds. Conduct of every subsequent round depends on the availability of seats. If vacant seats remain at the end of one round, the next round will be conducted.

Around 190 students were placed out of 200 students. In MBBS, there were no packages, but in internships doctor can earn around Rs 18,200 per month. After completion of MBBS, medical officer can earn around Rs 80,000 per month.

Government Medical College, Bhavnagar Facilities
Government Medical College Bhavnagar provides facilities to students and staff including hostel, library, lecture theaters, health centre, central photography and audio-visual unit etc. Description on the facilities provided are mentioned below.

Hostel- GMC Bhavnagar provides separate accommodation for girls and boys. There is one girls hostel and one boys hostel provided inside the college campus provided with basic facilities. The rooms inside the hostels are provided with basic furniture. The hostels also have a dining hall with a capacity to accommodate 50 students. All the hostels also have a mess facility of their own which serves quality and hygienic food to students. Wardens are there to maintain the rules and regulations of hostels.

Library- The central library of the institute has a huge collection of 15643 books including text books, reference books and journals to provide information regarding any relevant topic or subject. The library remains open from 8 am - 12 pm. The library also has a reading room which lets students read in a peaceful environment.

Lecture Theatres- The lecture theatres are provided inside the campus of Government Medical College, Bhavnagarare well equipped with advanced audio and video facilities to meet the requirements of the advancing technology. All the important seminars, conferences etc are conducted inside the lecture theatres.

Health Centre- Government Medical College, Bhavnagar has four health centres which are provided with all basic medical facilities to look after the medical treatment of students and staff in case of emergency.

Central Photography and Audio-Visual Unit- This Unit is provided with 2 digital cameras, 1 camera auto-focus, 1 camera S.L.R with tripod, 1 set of darkroom equipment, 2 drawing board and 4 brushes.

Boys Hostel
Two Hostels of 100 seats each - 1 for boys with a floor area of 1990 sq. mt. are constructed within the campus. Two more hostels - one each for boys with a seating capacity of 200 are also proposed to be constructed.


Girls Hostel
Two Hostels of 100 seats each - 1 for girls with a floor area of 1990 sq. mt. are constructed within the campus. Two more hostels - one each for girls with a seating capacity of 200 are also proposed to be constructed.


Medical/Hospital
Associated Hospital facility is available in the campus. The college has a health center with first aid facility for the students.

Library
Facility of the virtual library is available throughout all the Government Medical Colleges of State.
