Guru Nanak Educational Society was founded in 1970 and Guru Nanak College was established in January 1971 to commemorate the 500th birth anniversary of Shri Guru Nanak Devji – the founder of the Sikh religion on the land which was granted for the purpose by the Government of Tamil Nadu. Donations by prominent Sikh families and the Maharani Vidyavathi Trust funded the establishment of the College. Lt. Col. G.S. Gill was among the first of the prominent Punjabis who settled in the city and made important contributions to it.
(Late) Lt. Col. G.S. Gill was the founder President, who took active interest in the functioning of the College till his demise in 1982. (Late) Padmashree P. N. Dhawan was the General Secretary and (Late) Sardar Manohar Singh Sabherwal was the Treasurer. This yeoman service of a small community of Sikhs, who made Tamil Nadu their home, after they left Punjab following the partition was historic.
Guru Nanak College in a lush green 25-acre campus, cradled between the Raj Bhavan and the campus of the IIT-Madras, facing the Guru Nanak Salai, is located in Velachery, South Chennai – the gateway to the IT Expressway of Tamil Nadu. A Gurdwara was also inaugurated in 1971. A Langar kitchen is attached to the College Gurudwara. Mr Manjit Singh Nayar, General Secretary and Correspondent, from his own funds constructed the Langar Kitchen and introduced the Langar (free meal scheme) for the students since 2014. Around 700 meals are served on every working day of the College.
The founders envisioned the college to be a leading Institution of Excellence in Higher Education by providing holistic and quality education to the aspiring youth and the needy, especially the ones from the less privileged sections of the society. The noble mission of the Guru Nanak Educational Society is that irrespective of socio-economic background, caste, creed or religion everyone benefits from the education provided and prospers. This is in keeping with the motto of the College 'Pro Bono Publico' which is a translation of Sikh prayer ‘Sarbat ka bhalla’ meaning 'for the Benefit of All or literally 'May everyone prosper''. The Sikhs are a minority in the State and yet the Management does not claim any concessions extended to minority institutions. It is run and regulated like a non-minority institution in service of the majority community.
Guru Nanak College ensures that all those who pass through the portals of the College have a bright future in their domain. The college inculcates social values and responsibility, civic sense and discipline towards nurturing them as good human beings. They instill in them a sense of belonging and pride to be Indian citizens.
The students are inspired to imbibe the values and practices of Oneness of God (Ek Onkar), Religious Harmony, Universal Brotherhood, Respect for women, Kindness and Compassion, Sewa -selfless service, stand against oppression, submission to the Will of God (WAHEGURU) which are enshrined in the teachings of the patron Saint Sri Guru Nanak Devji.
The college motivates the staff and students to imbibe and practice the 3 cardinal principles of Sikhism.
Naam Japo: Chant the name of ‘True God’. Meditating on God’s name to gain control over the five evils – lust, anger, greed, attachment and ego.
Vand Chhako: With the grace of the Lord, whatever you have received, share it with the needy and then consume.
Kirat karo: Means make a living honestly. One should not exploit others to enjoy self-happiness.
The institution is managed on decentralized and democratic principles. It offers a vibrant academic atmosphere with a curriculum based on the regional, national and global demands of the society, at the under-graduate and post-graduate levels, focusing on teaching, learning, research and outreach programs.

The College was conferred academic Autonomous status by the UGC in 2015, with focus on creating conducive environment of liberalization and need based curriculum
This gives the College the superiority of powers for designing the curriculum for all the courses offered by the College. Additionally, the flexibility of frequently revising the syllabus, in keeping with the demands of the industry and also better implementation of our mission/core values. Guru Nanak College has a value-embedded curriculum (possible because of autonomy) and has one whole unit in the ‘Value Education’ subject on ‘the teachings of Guru Nanak Devji’.

ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES OF CONTROLLER OF EXAMINATION
COE is responsible for the entire examination process which includes the conduct of the end semester examination, evaluation and declaration of results.
Register No. allocation to all the students admitted in the college.
Scheduling internal examinations and ensure the online submission of IA marks.
Maintaining the panel of external examiners for question paper setting and evaluation.
Allocation of question papers for the external examiners for end semester examination and to ensure the online submission of question papers.
Scheduling Theory and practical end semester examinations.
Allocation of external examiners for practical semester examinations.
Ensuring the smooth conduct of examination.
Organising the evaluation camp, scrutinising and passing board.
Declaration of results in college website.
Addressing student’s grievances (revaluation, instant examination etc.,)
The COE shall issue marks statement, duplicate marks statement, consolidated marks statement, Transcripts, rank certificates.
Submission of PPR to University of Madras.
Conduct of Convocation for eligible candidates.
Applicants for the degree courses should have passed the Higher Secondary Examination (Standard XII under the 10 + 2 pattern prevalent in Tamil Nadu or its equivalent from other boards)
Candidates, who pass the All India Senior School Certificate Examinations, New Delhi, will be eligible for admission provided they pass the examination with a minimum of five subjects of which English shall be compulsory. An applicant should produce an "Eligibility Certificate", from the University of Madras, at the time of interview.
Foreign students should provide a regular, long term student Visa issued by respective Indian Embassy.
Applicants for the PG Courses should have obtained an undergraduate degree in the concerned subject or as per the eligibility required for the course.
Guru Nanak College Training and Placement Department is providing the road map to success to the young dynamic youth. It is identifying the missing link and bridging the gap between institution and industry. Career Guidance is provided throughout the year as one to one and groups at a large, as a comprehensive, developmental program designed to assist individuals in making and implementing occupational choices. The students will develop to make mature and informed decisions to manage their careers. The guidance helps the students to reflect on their ambitions, interests, qualifications, and abilities.
Career Opportunities are identified for the particular job that may be a stepping stone to achieve the ambitions of the students. The placement cell provides a window of potential opportunities by helping the students to determine the tasks and to inculcate the greater sense of responsibility for identifying and managing their own career.
Mock Interviews are the ways to find the hidden talents of the students. The placement cell is conducting mock interviews every so often to help the students to reduce their anxiety about interviewing. This will help the students to boost their confidence. The students will perform a few dry runs before they actually appear for an interview
Internship: The Internship Offers would also be cascaded to the students and the best of the efforts would be taken in order to get the maximum internship offers to the Students. Best of the opportunities would be given to all the students and the outgrowth of the same could be reflected among our students where potential students grab offers to their credit. Our Students would receive plenty of opportunities and they would be continued until the candidate gets placed in a reputed organization. Loan/ Scholarship Provisions: This college is affordable. The fee structure starts from 30,000 and more per year depending on which stream you are in. For our degree it's nearly 30000 per year it's for a GAS shift but for SFS it's 60000 per year. You will get many scholarship opportunities too.
