IIPM Bengaluru was established in November 1993 by the Ministry of Commerce & Industry (MoC&I), Government of India, as an autonomous educational institute of higher learning. During the initial years, the institute closely worked with the plantation industry and Commodity Boards of India (CBI) for the development of the Agri-plantation sector. IIPM conducted industry need-based short-duration capacity building and training programs for the stakeholders of the Agri-plantation sector that included planters, corporate managers, executive members of planter associations, small and medium entrepreneurs, officials, and scientists of the CBI, Ministries of Government of India, and officials of the State Development departments.

To meet the demand of the fresh graduates for customized academic programs in the Agri-plantation sector, IIPM introduced a 15-month PG program on Agribusiness and Plantation Management in that academic year 2000-2001 for new entrants in the plantation sector, which was later converted into a 24-month AICTE-approved Post Graduate Diploma in Management (PGDM) in Agribusiness and Plantations Management (PGDM-ABPM). Since then, it has introduced two other PGDM programs: (a) Food Processing and Business Management (PGDM-FPBM), and (b) Agricultural Exports and Business Management (PGDM-AEBM). The institute also offers Fellow Program in Management (FPM) aimed to develop accomplished and ethical researchers in the field of agribusiness, plantation, food and allied areas.

The IIPM Bengaluru admissions is a multistage process to gain admission into the pg diploma and fellow programmes. Candidates have to appear for IIPM Professional Aptitude Test (IPAT) as a preliminary step to gain admission into various courses. The test is followed by the candidates being required to attend a written ability test, a group discussion and interview. For the fellow programme, the institute considers performance in the written test, thesis proposal and a personal interview. Indian Institute of Plantation Management Bengaluru (IIPMB), a Centre of Excellence, and the first-of-its-kind National Institute established at the initiative of the Ministry of Commerce & Industry, Government of India, is engaged in management education, training, research and consultancy service. It is the flagship institute with expertise in managing the entire value chain right from cultivation, processing and domestic & international marketing of vast range of plantation crops that include tea, coffee, rubber, spices, coconut, cotton, sugarcane, forestry, plantation, horticulture, fodder plantations, herbal & medicinal plantations, nuts, apiary (bee-keeping), etc.

The college has modern library facilities equipped with internet access. It has a rich resource of books, journals, periodicals, and project reports. The library is currently subscribing to more than 140 journals both national and international repute. It has more than 8,000 books on diversified subjects viz., history, culture, religion, ethics, management, and law, besides, the sectoral collections including coffee, tea, rubber, spices, etc. The library has a variety of CDs and audio & video cassettes.

I.T Infrastructure

The college computer center is part of the Institute’s Knowledge Resource Centre and has more than 30 high-speed processors. The center has a high-speed internet facility through a BSNL Broadband connection.
