Nirmala College for Women, Red Fields, Coimbatore is a Catholic Institution of Higher Education for Women, instituted in the year 1948. It is under the direction of the religious society of the Franciscan Sisters of the Presentation of Mary founded by Rev.Fr. Joseph Louis Ravel in the year 1853. The College became autonomous in the year 2007. The Institution continues to be affiliated to Bharathiar University and is free to design its own course of studies and adopt innovative strategies of teaching and evaluation. The University degrees are conferred on the students passing the examinations conducted by the College.

The College had its humble beginning as a Second Grade College in the year 1948. The founder Msgr. Oubagarasamy, D.D., the Bishop of Coimbatore, with a missionary zeal and farsighted vision worked to contribute his might to the tremendous task of developing women's education in free India. He sent a proposal to the University of Madras requesting permission from the Coimbatore Diocese to start a College for women in Coimbatore. Thus Nirmala College came into being on the 1st of July 1948. The College has now emerged as one of the premier institutions of learning, propagating higher values of education and learning, with hopes and dreams to achieve her goal "Knowledge Purifies, Charity Enhances".

In recognition of the high academic performance and service, the College was accredited with ‘A’ Grade by NAAC during the academic year 2003-04 and was conferred the autonomous status in the year 2007.

The enhancement and sustenance of quality led to the reaccreditation of the college with ‘A’ Grade in the academic year 2010-2011.

In the year 2015, the college was once again accredited ‘A’ grade by NAAC with a CGPA of 3.62.The college having won ‘A’ grade successively in the three cycles is now eligible for a period of extension of seven years of assessment under NAAC.

The college has been recognized under the Star College Scheme of DBT, Government of India from 2012. The college was upgraded to the star status in 2017. Six science departments are included under the Star College Scheme. DST-FIST at the zero level has been awarded to the college in 2017.

The College has miles to go with its rich tradition to fall back on and as an Institution, an eternity to look forward to.

Nirmala college for women was inaugurated in 1948 with the view to enhance knowledge of women in various fields and create a new way of education. Recently they have been re-credited with A grade by the NAAC.

Nirmala college for women has been ranked 52nd by the India Today Ranking for Science in India.

The institute offers admission to the UG and PG courses. Higher Secondary Examination (10+2) qualified students can apply for admission to the course. Whereas, Bachelor degree holders in relevant subjects can apply for admission to the PG courses.

PROCEDURE FOR ADMISSION TO UG/PG COURSES 2021-2022

Fee Waiver Scheme

The State Government has started a fee waiver scheme to help the economically poor but meritorious students. Further information regarding this can be obtained from the office of the Registrar.

Education Loans

Getting Education is no longer an insurmountable problem these days. Education loans are available to the needy and deserving students from the Nationalized Banks at reasonable rates of interest. Theses loans are repayable after the completion of the degree/diploma.

Financial Help

It is a motto with the management of our Group, “Poverty would not be allowed to stand in the way of the completion of the education of meritorious students. Such students are generously helped. Academically intelligent and poor students to acquire higher education by giving them financial help in the form of tuition fee waiver. Relaxation in tuition fee is also given to merit position holders in the qualifying examinations/competitive examinations and position holders in the University examinations. The parents of meritorious students are also honoured along with the students in the annual functions of the Colleges.

CLASSROOMS

Maintenance is an important factor in quality assurance and the good functioning of the institution

Adequate Human resources are appointed exclusively for the maintenance and upkeep of campus infrastructure. All class rooms are well maintained. A maintenance supervisor and maintenance assistants like plumbers and electricians assist in the upkeep and preventive maintenance of the entire premises. This personnel are available 24*7 to monitor the maintenance activities.

SPORTs

Sports room, gym and playground are maintained by the support staff under the supervision of the physical directress.

LAB EQUIPMENTS

The Stock registers and accession registers for equipment, chemicals and glassware are updated annually by the staff in the science labs. Maintenance of equipment and glassware are done by the lab assistants after every practical. Maintenance of some equipment such as the microscope is outsourced.

The library is well-equipped with excellent seating arrangements. It is completely automated with the implementation of the latest software’s like,

The Library is kept open every working day from 9:00 am to 5:30 pm. The ticket system is followed for lending books. Each student will be issued two tickets. Books may be renewed for a further period of one fortnight. Students are not allowed to sub-lend the books of the library to any person, Reader’s tickets are not transferable. Readers are asked to cover the books borrowed. All the tickets should be returned to the library at the end of the year. A copier facility is also provided.

The stacking arrangement of the books in the library is done with the help of Dewey Decimal Classification 21st Edition. The library staff conduct physical stock verification annually. The library makes use of Natural Insect Repellent for pest control.

COMPUTERS

AMC exists for the maintenance and upkeep of all computers and internet facilities. All the electrical and electronics equipment are looked after by a team of electrical maintenance staff.
