Periyar Maniammai Institute of Science and Technology, established in 1988 by the Periyar Maniammai Educational and Charitable Society, Chennai is a private Institute headquartered in the town of Vallam in Thanjavur.  It is a unique institution of higher learning and academic excellence, fulfilling the dreams of its Mentor Thanthai Periyar E.V.Ramasamy and and his wife Annai E. V. R. Maniammaiyar to transform students from different parts of India and Abroad into stalwarts, by igniting their hidden talents.

The PMIST campus is located on a land area of 115 acres which once were barren and dry with scarce population in rural area.  The campus, with a built up area of 90,000 sq.m, is eco-friendly, pollution-free, energy-efficient, zero-waste, well-laid, green and clean with an ideal ambience for learning.  The Institution is situated at 10 km west from Thanjavur and 45 km on the east from Tiruchirapalli and is easily accessible by road, rail and air.

The Insitute was started with the approval of All India Council for Technical Education, New Delhi.  It was initially affiliated to Bharathidasan University and later to Anna University, Chennai from 2001.  Since August 17, 2007 it has been functioning as Deemed to be University with the approval of the UGC and Ministry of Human Resources, New Delhi.

At both the UG and PG levels, the Periyar Maniammai Institute of Science and Technology offers a total of 54 courses.  A range of 31 UG-level courses and 23 PG-level courses are available at PMIST, Thanjavur in both full-time and part-time education modes.  Engineering and Architecture, Sciences, Management and Business Administration, Education, Computer Application and IT, Humanities and Arts, Commerce, and Animation and Design are the eight streams in which the PMIST courses are offered. BA, B.Arch, B.Tech, B.Com, B.Com Hons., B.Ed, B.Sc, BCA, BBA, MBA, M.Tech, MCA, M.Sc, MA, and MSW programs are offered at PMIST Thanjavur.  For admission to the courses, the institute has established particular offers scholarships to Students based upon various criteria to further their education qualifying requirements.  Before submitting an application for admission, candidates must be aware of the eligibility requirements. The fees at PMIST for various courses ranges between Rs 28,000 to Rs Rs 5.75 Lakhs.

Scholarships for each candidate will be decided based on the marks scored in 12th standard and in JEE or equivalent or PMIST Entrance Test for B.Tech programmes (Up to Rs.1,80,000). For the B.Com, BA, BBA, B.Ed, BSc programmes it will be based on the marks scored in 12th standard and the PMIST Entrance Test. (Up to Rs.15,000) The sanctioned scholarship will be given throughout the programme subject to the conditions that the student should have an all pass and a minimum of 80% attendance in the previous academic year. ICT FACILITIES

SYSTEM AND NETWORK ADMINISTRATION
Periyar Maniammai Institute of Science and Technology (PMIST) recognizes the vital role information technology plays in the Institution's missions and related administrative activities as well as the importance in an academic environment of protecting information in all forms. As more information is used and shared in a digital format by students, faculty and staff, both within and outside the Institution, an increased effort must be made to protect the information and the technology resources that support it. Increased protection of our information and Information Technology Resources to assure the usability and availability of those Resources is the primary concern.

System and Network Administration is governing the use of PMIST computing and IT communication resources, the resources administered by the administrative departments such as Library, Computer Laboratories, Offices of the Institution, Hostels and Guest houses wherever the network facility was provided by the Institution.

Further, the entire faculty, students, staff, departments, authorized visitors/visiting faculty and others who may be granted permission to use the IT Infrastructure, and must comply with the guidelines. Certain violations of PMIST rules by any institution member may even result in disciplinary action against the offender by the institution authorities.

E-mail account has been facilitated to Employee and students under E-mail Use policy which is reviewed and maintained whenever the modification happens. Database Usage policy is governed by the e-Governance division of PMIST.

IT INFRASTRUCTURE
IT infrastructure has been spread across PMIST connecting 14 buildings with high speed network deployment. The computer network is built on CISCO and DAX switching platform running on 1 GBPS bandwidth. 1500+ IP enabled devices are connected to this fast network. As per the request and demand of PMIST faculty and students to use the network facilities for their research, teaching and learning process the network services are made available for 24/7 across PMIST.

Over 77 Wi-Fi access points are positioned across the campus to facilitate access to our students, faculty and guests while they are available in the campus. Seamless Internet access is given to students through with high speed and well planned Wi-Fi network at hostel rooms.

ZERO CARBON CAMPUS

PMU campus has around 4,500 shrubs and plant varieties, 26,000 native trees and endangered trees. Such thick foliage of vegetation releases oxygen of 8.4 tonnes per day and CO2 absorption is around 1.6 tonnes per day. Alternative building materials like hollow blocks, interlocking blocks, paver blocks are manufactured in the campus using innovative technologies to meet its own infrastructural requirements.

Periyar Paper Re-processing Unit is available for Paper recycling. Sources for the paper recycling unit are retrieved from our University and reinforcing materials (cotton waste) are added to strengthen the quality of the paper. The University always keeps pace with the shifts in technology like transition from fluorescent lamps to CFL and now to LED. International 5R’s (Refuse, Reduce, Reuse, Recycle and Recover) concept on Solid Waste Management is practiced here.

HOSTEL
To cater to the needs of residential students, PMIST has established three Women’s hostels and one Men’s Hostel.

Vittobai Hostel facilitates with 110 rooms

Swarna Ranganathan Hostel has 65 rooms are provided with attached bath & toilet facilities.

Chakravarthi Hostel facilitates with 120 rooms accompanying three students in one room A TV hall with DTH, a functioning GYM with necessary equipments, a badminton court, purified drinking water, solar water heaters, 24 hours power & water supply, Wi-Fi facility, machanized laundry service, hospital and vehicle at emergency situation is made available at hostel. Healthy and nutritive food is served. The hostel kitchen has facilities for steam cooking with gas stoves. The Chakkaravarthy hostel dinning block covers an area of about 970.63sq.m 500 numbers of students dining together.

FOOD

The menu is decided by the Students Mess Committees. Quality nutritious food is served.

  

STUDENT ASSOCIATION

PMU START (Students Taking Active Role Together) group along with CUII organizes various personality and skill development programmes for endorsing placement. The 8 Clubs and 4 Societies organizes different activities and programmes encouraging students extracurricular activities.
Concurrent Career Development Programme, In-plant Training, Internship Programme, Open House and Showcasing are the other highlights. Student’s elections are conducted in a democratic way every year to elect student’s representatives. Students are encouraged to involve in ‘Earn While Learn’ scheme. NSS, NCC, YRC, RRC and various society oriented student’s activities are also a part of study which moulds the future professionals.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION

Periyar Maniammai Institute of Science & Technology emphasizes on total personality development of all students so that they can serve for the advancement of the Nation. Keeping this in mind, training is given to students under National Sports Organization, which include physical fitness activities, martial arts, Games and Sports.
