Overview

The Government of Tamil Nadu established Periyar University in Salem on 17th September 1997 as per the provisions of the Periyar University Act, 1997. The University covers the area comprising four districts namely Salem, Namakkal, Dharmapuri, and Krishnagiri. The University obtained 12(B) and 2(f) status from the University Grants Commission, New Delhi and it was reaccredited by the NAAC with “A++” Grade in 2021. The University secured 59th rank among Indian Universities by MoE NIRF 2023.

Periyar University imparts higher education through three modes: Departments of Study and Research, the affiliated Colleges, and Periyar University Centre for Online and Distance Education (PUCODE). The University has 27 departments and 113 affiliated colleges.

The Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) was introduced for various programmes offered by the University from 2008-09 onwards. From 2009-10 onwards, the University has been offering certificate courses to cater to the current needs of the public. Periyar University provides the Student Support Services such as Library, National Service Scheme, Youth Red Cross, Women’s Welfare Centre and various avenues for sports and games.

At present, 4 departments have SAP, sanctioned by the UGC and 7 departments have FIST programme sanctioned by DST. Textiles and Apparel Design, and Food Science and Nutrition Departments have been granted Rs. 1.5 crores by UGC to run the B.Voc Programme in the respective disciplines.

The University has tie-ups with a number of academic, research institutes, and universities across the world to stay up to date on quality benchmarks. Admission

Periyar University is a state university in Salem, Tamil Nadu, India. It was established by the Government of Tamil Nadu in 1997. Periyar University imparts higher education through its Departments of Study and Research, Periyar Institute of Distance Education (PRIDE), and the Affiliated Colleges. The 29 departments offer research programs apart from postgraduate and some certificate programs. In addition, the five departments at the PG Extension Centre, Dharmapuri offer Post Graduate programs.

For M.Phil and Ph.D. Programs, Candidates must have completed post-graduation in the relevant stream. Selection will be based on the marks obtained in the qualifying examination.

Periyar University has launced online portal for UG, PG courses where it will offer MBA, MSc in Mathematics, MA with specializations in English and History and M.Com programs. Periyar University PG Admissions

At the PG level, Periyar University offers various courses to the candidates seeking admission in MA, M.Com. and M.Sc. courses. The duration of these courses is 2 years. In addition to this, the university also offers a Master of Library and Information Science and its duration is 1 year.

Periyar University MBA, MCA and M.Ed Admissions

Periyar University offers MCA (aided and self-supportive), MCA (aided and self-supportive lateral entry), and MBA to the students who seek to take admission at the postgraduate level. There are 71, 142, and 200 seats available for each program respectively. The duration for MCA (aided and self-supportive) is for three years and the rest is two years.

For MCA, candidates need to appear in TANCET which is an online entrance examination for the mentioned course. Students who are willing to seek admission in MBA will need to appear either in TANCET or MAT followed by group discussion and personal interview.

Periyar University M.Phil and Ph.D. Admission

Periyar University offers M.Phil and Ph.D. courses to the students in various specializations. The duration of these two programs is one and two years respectively.

Candidates who have qualified for Post Graduate Degree (any biological science) of this University or equivalent Degree with 55% of marks can apply for M.Phil.

Candidates holding recognized Master’s Degree or recognized equivalent Master’s Degrees (M.Sc with Microbiology/ Biotechnology/Biochemistry or an allied area) to be considered eligible for registration for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the subjects with at least 55% marks or equivalent grades can apply Ph.D.

Career Guidance and Placement Cell endeavor in getting the Students Placed in reputed Companies, government departments and in private sectors. The Students are given Coaching/ training on Soft Skills and Language Skills. The Faculty Members and Placement Officer are trained to through experts from industry and academia. They in turn train their students and motivate them to develop and improve their communication skills, interview skills.
Aptitude Test/Model Test, Group Discussions are conducted for the benefit of students. In the Mock Campus Drives students were given Model Question papers and solution and follow up coaching are taken up in respective Institutions.

Department of Employment and Training, Government of Tamil Nadu is conducting free coaching classes for various competitive examinations conducted by TNPSC (Tamil Nadu Public Service Commission) and BSRB ( Banking Service Recruitment Board). To motivate the students towards higher education the university is keen on creating avenues to get scholarships/fellowships through various schemes from Government sector, NGO and through institution support by the way of waiving fees under free education scheme meant for merit-cum-economically weaker sections, merit scholarships, University Research Fellowships, and freeships.

Free Education for PG Students

One first year student of each programme offered by the University departments and scored high rank in the UG programme and from poor family is exempted from paying fees for the whole period of the programme based on the recommendation of the department committee.

Dr. Ambedhkar and Rajaji Meritorious Scholarship

Endowment Merit Scholarship in the name of National leaders Thiru Rajaji and Dr. Ambedkar has been created for meritorious students of the University Departments/Government Colleges/Aided Colleges /University Constituent Colleges/Periyar University PG Extension Center. One first year PG student having highest score in the UG programme among the classmates will be awarded the scholarship based on the recommendation sent by the Head of the Department and the scholarship will be renewed for the second year also if the candidate passed all the subjects in first year PG in a single attempt.

University Research Fellowship

One research scholar irrespective of the category under each supervisor will be provided University Research Fellowship (URF) based on their registration seniority among the scholars registered to that research supervisor.

Tuition Fee Waiver Scheme

Students admitted in B.Voc. (Food Science and Nutrition/Textiles and Apparel Design) are eligible to get tuition waiver, irrespective of their category. Physically disabled students admitted in the University Departments are eligible for tuition fee waiver sscheme irrespective of their category and programme enrolled.

Partial Travel Financial Support

The research scholars of the University Departments presenting research papers in the International Conferences organized by the Foreign institutions are eligible to avail 50 % of the air fare.

Library: The university has a total collection of 90,871 volumes of text and reference books on various disciplines, 167 periodicals, 16 online journals.

Medical Centre: There is a health center on campus that functions on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. Everyone from students to teaching and non-teaching staff can avail of medical consultation.
Internet Centre: The lab has a total of 61 PCs used to provide to the students browsing and mailing needs. They can also keep themselves updated in the latest trend of the technical fields.

The Periyar University Health Centre functions in the Separate premises . One Medical Officer is available from 4.00 p.m to 5.00 p.m on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. The teaching and Non-teaching staff and the regular P.G., M.Phil., and Ph.D. students can avail medical consultation at the above-mentioned timings. One male nurse is available during office hours to meet emergency medical care.

High Performance Computing

Research Scholars and Students can run their models with Huge/Large data sets using high performance computing facilities. Further, they can submit their job and execute it remotely with the help of private cloud. The students are trained with Big Data Analytical models through this server without installing Hadoop and Map. In order to fulfill the above requirements, the High Performance Computing facility created in Periyar University to carry out the high quality research work and publish the research papers in the world class journals.

Sports

The university has well quipped indoor and outdoor stadiums to cater the need of the students and to prepare and conduct national and state level meets. It has state of art GYM facilities for the students and staff.
