Overview

The South Indian Vaniar Educational Trust owes its birth to the far-sighted vision and vigorous initiative of late Hon’ble Justice Thiru. S.A.Ayyasami Chettiar, M.A., B.L., who raised donations from the generous-hearted and public-spirited members of the Vaniar community. He founded the esteemed charitable organization in 1960. The primary aim of the Trust has always been to promote education among all young aspirants seeking the benefits of higher education irrespective of differences in caste creed. The message of the Trust becoming loud and clear more and more donors of the community came forward and offered their contributions. The Government of Tamilnadu assigned the Trust a site of 27.47 acres at a nominal cost. S.I.V.E.T.College came into being at Gowrivakkam in July 1966 in a modestly constructed building.

Admission Process

1. GENERAL INSTRUCTION FOR ADMISSION

The following Guidelines is prescribed for admission to the Academic Year 2023-2024:
Students seeking admission should apply in the prescribed format available Online only. Hard Copies to be submitted at the time of interview.
Only one application to be filled for one course.
Applications for multiple courses, payment should be made separately.
SC/ST candidates are exempted from payment of the Application.
Admission of students from other Board Examination / other University areas is subject the confirmation of the University of Madras. Candidate would be required to prove his / her eligibility for admission by providing original and genuine documents in support of the claims made.
Admission to any course does not guarantee Hostel Accommodation. For Hostel admission separate application form should be submitted. At present, only Ladies’ Hostel is available.
All certificates are subject to verification by the Director of Government Examination. If a candidate is admitted on the basis of information submitted by him/ her, which is found to be incorrect or false on a later date, his/ her admission shall be cancelled and all fees and other dues paid by him/her shall be forfeited. The college authorities may also take further action as deemed fit against such candidate and / or his/ her parents / guardians as considered suitable.
The student would be liable for necessary action as deemed fit by the College authorities for any wrong information filled in the application form.
Any student who is absent without the written permission of the Principal for the first five working days after admission, will forfeit his/her seat.
Number of seats limited to each Department offering the courses and selections are based on the reservation policy prescribed by the Government of Tamil Nadu.
Applications must be complete in all aspects. Incomplete applications will be rejected without any intimation.

2.COST OF APPLICATION FORMS 2023-2024:
Cost of Application Forms for UG Courses: Cost of application form is fixed at Rs.48/- (Rupees forty eight only) + Rs.2/- (Rupees two only) for Registration. For SC/ST candidates, application form is to be issued free of cost on the showing the photocopy of community certificate .
Cost of Application Forms for PG Courses: Cost of application form for PG courses is fixed at Rs.58/-(Fifty eight only)+Rs.2/- (Rupees two only)for registration. For SC/ST candidates, application form is to be issued free of cost on the showing the photocopy of community certificate.

Facility

Women’s Hostel

The hostel block spreads on a land of about 14,500 sqft which includes spacious dining hall, general room for reading, recreation and playing indoor games. The hostel is supplied with RO water and telecommunication facility. Hospitals are available in the vicinity.

Any girl students after getting admitted into the college can avail hostel facility. Filled in application form duly signed by the parent/guardian has to be submitted. Later upon shortlisting, based on the availability of rooms, deserving students are given admission.

Hostel students should follow the rules and regulations prescribed by the institution.

Laboratory:

Our College has got well equipped & well-furnished laboratories on subjects like Chemistry, Zoology, Physics, Biochemistry & Computer laboratories towards development and nurturing the technical skills of the students.

PHYSICS LABORATORY:
Physics laboratory is adequately equipped to conduct U.G. practical. The experiments conducted at the UG level are (i) general practical (ii) Electronic experiments and (iii) Application oriented experiments. In general practical, experiments in electricity, magnetism, heat, light and sound are conducted. These experiments help students to understand the basic phenomenon in physics which are theoretically taught. Electronics experiments are conducted in order to study the characteristics of electronic components such as diode, transistor, field effect transistor, Uni-function transistor, silicon controlled rectifier and integrated in units. It helps the students to understand the basic functioning of the electronics science in gadgets like T.V., Mobile phone, Computers, power supply, inverter, etc. In the application oriented laboratory experiments on operation amplifiers and microprocessor are done. The students are taught to write programs to perform addition, subtraction and other mathematical computations. The laboratory is also equipped with a magnetic stirrer with hot plate for both students and staff to grow crystals in the laboratory for their research works.

CHEMISTRY LABORATORY:
The laboratory has all the equipment required for the undergraduate courses as prescribed in Madras University syllabus. Decimal Shimadzn Digital Electronic Balance INFRA In 200 BL cap: 200g, Reagent 0.1mg from Sigma Scientific Instrument are used instead of the two-pen analytical balance. An RO plant, -Ion exchange demineraliser water plant, size Indic on CA 20/u is installed. All the necessary distilled water required for the analysis is being obtained from the plant. Computers with a laser printer, refrigerators for storing the chemicals, thermos stated hot air oven with controller, fan 18 X 18 X 18 Chamber and ‘matai’ Me-2230 1500 watts stainless steel from Central Scientific Company, electrical water bath with 12 holes from Sigma Scientific Instruments, hot plate 8” M/s top, a couple of sigma vacuum pump double stage size: 200 litre and 0.50 HP motor, and a clinical centrifuge SH covered 3500.5 speed are also available. The department of chemistry is well equipped with sophisticated tools like LCD Projector and OHP Projector. These tools are not only used by the staff members as teaching aids, but also by the students for presenting their project papers and seminars. Students are also well trained in the power point presentation.

Students are given hands on training on all these equipment. Experimentation shall help the student to get an exposure to the Job-oriented research laboratories.

ZOOLOGY LABORATORY:
The Laboratory inculcates and evinces great interest in students who wish to enter into the Medical field. It has both basic and advanced facilities

Desktop computers with peripherals: 2(one for departmental use and the other for students.
Lap top: 1 for power point presentations and visuals.
LCD Projector: 1 for power point presentations and visuals.
Refrigerated Centrifuge: 1 for enzyme studies.
Demineraliser Plant: 1 for distilled water collection.
USB Eye-piece camera:1 to project side specimens from microscope to lab-top
Digital Micro photography: 1 to take photographs of sides.
Spectrophotometers: 3 for quantitative estimation of biological samples.
Digital Balance: 2 for accurate weighing of chemicals.
Refrigerator: 1 to preserve biological samples and reagents.
Autoclave: 1 for student demonstration.
Hot-air-oven: 1 for student demonstration.
Incubator: 1 for student demonstration.
Water bath: 1 for student demonstration.
Binocular microscopes: to demonstrate RBC and WBC Total and difference count.
OHP: 1for students’ seminar.
Compound Microscope:34 for mounting, spotters display etc.,
Dissection Microscope: 36 to aid in mounting specimens.
Students get an exposure through these experiments and simultaneously are given an opportunity to work in the field of Modern Laboratory Technology.

(d)COMPUTER LABORATORY:

The college houses many computer labs. There are more than 180 computers only for the use of students.

It has a Computer laboratory in first floor of the Main building for the use of Undergraduate students. Beside Two Computer laboratories, one in the second floor of the Main building and other in the Ground floor of the M.B.A and M.C.A Block, cater to the modern needs of Post Graduate students. The Computer lab consists of advanced systems with new configuration and is up-to-date with new soft wares.

A Computer centre is also provided for the students. Internet network facility is available in the computer centre for the student references. It has 20 computers with an updated configuration.

(e)BIO-CHEMISTRY LABORATORY:

The bio-chemistry laboratory, occupies an area of approximately 2000 sq. Feet and the students can use the equipment for their study & analysis. The students performing experiments / programs in their laboratories are being guided / assisted by experienced faculty members.

Library:

The Library of S.I.V.E.T. College promotes sharing of resources by collecting, storing and disseminating information. It offers computerized services to the users. Institutions of higher education have the main responsibilities of equipping students, researchers and faculty with advanced knowledge and skills. Well-equipped and managed library is an essential prerequisite to achieve this. In particular, scientific research needs a library as well as its laboratories. S.I.V.E.T. College Library undertakes many responsibilities and performs various functions. It plays a vital role in the university education and research by providing invaluable resource of knowledge.

It has transformed from “book-only” library to a modern “digital library” with valuable Collection of e-resources to cater to the increasing information needs of the U.G., P.G. and Researchers.

It has a total of Books-47000, National Journals-24, Magazines-78, Back Volumes of Journals-112, Competitive Exam Books-276, Book Bank Books-240, CDs / DVDs-155, AV Resources-77, Audio Cassettes-31 and National Dailies-7.

DEPARTMENT OF LIBRARY AND INFORMATION SCIENCE
LIBRARY GENESIS

The Library is the heart of the institution. It is to promote sharing of resources by collecting, storing and disseminating information and by offering computerized services to the users. Institutions of higher education have the main responsibilities of equipping students, researchers and faculty with advanced knowledge and skills. Well-equipped and managed library is an essential prerequisite to achieve this. In particular, scientific research needs a library as well as its laboratories. Keeping this in view, the S.I.V.E.T. College Library undertakes many responsibilities and performs varied functions and it plays a vital role in the university education and research by providing invaluable resource of knowledge.

The S.I.V.E.T. College Library was established in 1966 along with 250 books. Our library had a humble beginning and over these 50 years its growth has been phenomenal and transformed from “book-only” library to a modern “digital library” with invaluable Collection of e-resources to cater to the increasing information requirements of the U.G. and P.G. and research students.

Spread over about 2,000 square feet library is home to about 47,000 books. Endowed with a first floor that houses a portion of the library’s book racks, the library is provides a lovely ambience to sit and read.

USER ORIENTATION

Students at the entry level are instructed about the rules and regulations through workshops at entry level for using library resources at specially designed orientation programed. Special training is provided on use of internet, INFLIBNET and Multimedia. Librarian provides orientation on the user facilities

Sports
The Physical Education department at S.I.V.E.T. College is headed by Dr.M.Pari (Government aided) & Mr.S.Sivashankar (SF Stream). The College has marked 3 acres of its land for the play fields and has ample Outdoor and Indoor Sports facilities.

Outdoor Sports:

Facility includes separate grounds for Cricket, Football, Handball & athletics (6 lanes, 200 mts track). Besides, full fledged space is allotted for

Students are trained to represent various levels viz University of Madras zonal and Intra zonal, Open Intercollegiate Tournaments, All India Inter University tournaments, Intramural events, Inter departmental activities and organizing Inter Collegiate Tournaments (Cricket, Table Tennis, Chess, Ball Badminton)for SIVET Trophy. Annual Sports meet is conducted every year and matches organized for the teaching & administrative staff as well for the same. Various games & Sports develop self-confidence, improves team building, interpersonal skills, fitness, responsibility and Leadership.
