Thanjavur Medical College (TMC)

Thanjavur Medical College, is one of the leading Government Medical Colleges established in the Year 1959 to cater to the Health care needs of the people in and around Thanjavur District.  It is most popularly known as TMC, Thanjavur.

The foundation stone for the medical college building was laid in1958 by Dr. Rajendra Prasad, the then President of India. It was first intended to be started at the Raja Mirasdars Hospital premises.  Later at the behest of Kamarajar, the Chief Minister of Madras and on the request of M.L.A. Parisutha Nadar, it was shifted to the present Medical College premises. The land was gifted earlier by Yagappa Nadar , Head of Arulanda Ammal family through the Rotary Club of Thanjavur.  The deposit money for the college was arranged from the Tanjore District Board Railway Cess Fund.

TMC is one of the oldest medical colleges in Tamil Nadu.  It caters to the medical needs of districts of Thanjavur, Ariyalur, Nagapattinam, Tiruvarur, Perambalur and Pudukkottai.  It is established & operated by Government of Tamil Nadu through Tamil Nadu Directorate of Medical Education.

Thanjavur Medical College is spread over an area of 228 acres on th Thanjavur Medical College Road, Thanjavur, Tamil Nadu.  TMC has vast expanses of land that was recently cleared of all the sludge and made green by a drive of the corporation.  Four gates allow entry into the college from the Thanjavur-Vallam Road.  Thanjavur is well connected by road as well as rail network and the Medical College is located 7km from the city, which can be reach within 15min by road.  The nearest airport is Trichy International Airport with a distance of 60KM and its well connected with Domestic and International cities, with travel duration of an hour.

The Thanjavur Medical College is affiliated to The Tamil Nadu Dr. MGR Medical University, Chennai and recognized by National Medical Commission (NMC).

Thanjavur Medical College offers MBBS, Post Graduate programs in MS/MD and Super Speciality courses.  It has an annual intake of 150 seats in MBBS, 109 seats in 18 disciplines of Post-Graduate studies and 12 seats in 5 disciplines of super- Specialization studies.   The accepted Eligibility exams are NEET, NEET PG and NEET SS.

TMC Thanjavur provides beautiful Infrastructure with spacious Classrooms, Lecture halls to accommodate around 250+, Examination rooms, Library with Separate Reading Room and e-library with excellent internet facility, Demonstration rooms, Seminar halls, Departmental museums and well-equipped Laboratories, huge Auditorium, Canteens and Recreation halls, separate Hostel facilities for Boys and Girls and Indoor and Outdoor Games and Sports facilities, Cafeteria, Medical/Hospital facilities, Guest Room/Waiting Room, etc.  The college has pre-clinical, para-clinical and clinical disciplines.

The Thanjavur Medical College Hospital (TMCH) and the Raja Mirasdar Hospital are affiliated to Thanjavur Medical College.  These hospitals are among the top-notch hospitals in Thanjavur. They are known to provide medical and therapeutic services.  TMCH started with 650 beds in the 1960s and today the college has emerged into an institution of higher learning in Medicine and research with 3000 beds.  Thanjavur Medical College Hospital is a referral teaching hospital.  Proposals for starting a Trauma Care Hospital and Cancer Hospital are pending with the government.
