WBJEE 2026: Jadavpur University may soon start a separate counselling procedure for BTech admissions once the results of the West Bengal Joint Entrance Examination are declared. This step is being considered to ensure that the admission process does not face the delays that occurred last year. However, the proposal still needs approval from the Government of West Bengal, and it remains uncertain whether it will be implemented in the current admission cycle.
According to media reports, a senior professor stated that the proposal was drafted by the Faculty Council of Engineering and Technology and submitted to the state government for consideration. Although the university has taken the initiative, it is awaiting formal approval from the authorities before implementing the plan. A similar suggestion had been discussed previously, but it did not receive approval at that time.
Many Seats Remained Vacant Last Year in Jadavpur University
During the previous admission cycle, more than 150 out of 1,308 BTech seats at Jadavpur University remained unfilled even after the centralised counselling rounds had concluded. In order to fill the remaining seats, the university later had to conduct its own BTech counselling process. Officials believe that initiating the counselling process earlier this year could help prevent such vacancies.
University officials also indicated that conducting an independent counselling process could attract candidates with higher ranks. In many cases, delays in the centralised counselling system push students to secure admission in private colleges or institutions located in other states.
OBC Quota Row Delayed WBJEE Counselling Last Year
Last year, the WBJEE counselling process faced delays because the results of the West Bengal Joint Entrance Examination were postponed following a legal dispute regarding OBC reservations in West Bengal. The issue emerged after a decision by the Calcutta High Court questioned the validity of several OBC categories that had been introduced after 2010. This ruling created uncertainty surrounding the state’s reservation policy and delayed both the announcement of WBJEE results and the counselling timeline. The delay impacted admissions in several government engineering institutions that depend on WBJEE scores, including:
- Jadavpur University
- Government College of Engineering and Ceramic Technology
- Government College of Engineering and Leather Technology
Faculty members had earlier cautioned that prolonged delays in the admission process could disrupt the academic schedule. They also expressed concerns that highly capable students might choose private institutions if the admission process continues to be postponed. University authorities stated that starting the BTech counselling process earlier would help ensure that classes begin on schedule and reduce the number of vacant seats in engineering programmes.
