Centre Launches Structured Support for Indian Universities to Boost Global Rankings; QS Methodology Training Conducted: Acknowledging the rising influence of global university rankings on international reputation, student mobility, and academic collaborations, the Union government has decided to provide structured support to Indian higher education institutions (HEIs) to enhance their performance in global ranking frameworks. As part of this initiative, the Ministry of Education has begun actively guiding universities to help them improve their standing in international rankings.

In line with this objective, the Ministry of Education organised a national-level orientation and capacity-building programme focused on the QS World University Rankings methodology. The programme was designed for vice-chancellors and senior officials of higher education institutions, with the aim of improving institutional awareness and preparedness regarding global ranking processes.

Emphasis on ranking framework, data practices and reputation metrics
Conducted in collaboration with QS Quacquarelli Symonds, the training programme sought to familiarise participating institutions with the core indicators used in global rankings. These included academic reputation, employer reputation, research impact measured through citations per faculty, internationalisation parameters, and best practices related to accurate and timely data submission.

Officials stressed that a clear understanding of ranking methodologies and strategic alignment with these indicators is vital for strengthening India’s overall academic presence on the global stage.

The workshop attracted wide participation, with over 400 stakeholders joining the sessions online and more than 60 attending in person. Participants included vice-chancellors, directors, and nodal officers representing universities and institutes from across the country.

India’s growing footprint in QS World University Rankings
This initiative comes against the backdrop of India achieving its highest-ever representation in the QS World University Rankings. A total of 54 Indian institutions have been featured in the 2026 edition, reflecting a significant increase compared to earlier years. The Centre believes that targeted capacity-building efforts will help ensure that higher participation also leads to improved ranking positions and enhanced global visibility.

Officials further underlined the importance of strengthening research output, expanding international collaborations, and investing in long-term reputation-building initiatives. They noted that sustained institutional reforms and strategic planning will be essential for achieving consistent and meaningful improvements in global university rankings over time.
