Seats Approved After Appeal Review
According to an official public notice issued on March 30, 2026, the approvals were granted by the Medical Assessment and Rating Board (MARB), functioning under the NMC. These approvals followed scrutiny of appeals filed under Section 28(5) of the NMC Act, 2019.
The NMC clarified that although Letters of Permission (LoPs) for these newly sanctioned seats will be issued shortly, the approved seat list itself will be treated as a valid document for the ongoing counselling process. Authorities conducting counselling have been instructed not to wait for the LoPs before including these seats.
The communication was addressed to Deans, Principals, and stakeholders, with NMC Secretary Dr. Raghav Langer urging immediate action based on the updated approvals.
Seat Matrix Finalised After Committee Meeting
The additional seats are based on decisions taken during the First Appeal Committee meeting held on March 24, 2026. Subsequently, an office memorandum dated March 27, 2026, was issued by the Policy and Coordination Division of NMC, sharing the revised and consolidated seat matrix.

Instructions to Authorities
The NMC has directed institutions and authorities to promptly update the seat matrix and communicate the revised numbers to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW), Medical Counselling Committee (MCC), and Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS). This step is crucial to ensure that the additional seats are incorporated into the ongoing counselling process without delay.
Impact on Medical Education
This move is expected to significantly enhance super-speciality training capacity in India. By increasing DM and MCh seats across institutions, the NMC aims to strengthen advanced medical education and address the growing demand for specialized healthcare professionals.
Notably, this approval follows a broader trend of seat expansion in recent months, reflecting the regulator’s focus on improving access to higher medical education and healthcare services nationwide.
