HISTORY

Shiromani Gurudwara Prabandhak Committee’s Guru Nanak Khalsa College of Arts, Science and Commerce is among the earliest institutions of higher learning that emerged on the educational landscape of the erstwhile city of Bombay. Situated in the heart of the city, yet in peaceful seclusion, amidst idyllic centres of learning, the college has a majestic and aesthetically-designed structure and a verdant ambience. It strives to create an atmosphere conducive to the pursuit of higher learning. The College is one of Mumbai’s old colleges; it is permanently affiliated to the University of Mumbai and was accorded the UGC recognition under 2f in 1974. Its financial status is grant-in-aid.

G. N. Khalsa was the brainchild of Dr. B. R. Ambedkar who wanted to set-up a centre or an institute in Bombay for higher education. In 1935 he put forth this proposal of establishing an educational institution for higher education in Bombay to the Sikh religious leaders at Amritsar. The Sikh leaders agreed upon this idea with their main objective of providing good quality of higher education and also to popularize Sikh culture in a non-Sikh State. Thus in 1937, G. N. Khalsa College was born in a plot where the college stands today, with the total area of 27, 642 sq. yards.

G. N. Khalsa College has produced great personalities in various fields namely academicians like Shri Ram Joshi (former Vice-Chancellor, Mumbai University), Prof. J. V. Naik, Politician and many more. The College has also produced great Sports personalities. These include a number of Olympians, Arjuna Awardees and Padmashri Awardees. The following Khalsities have represented India in Olympics: S.S.Narayan (Football), Mary Leela Rao (Athletics), Balbir Singh (Hockey), Silma D’Silva (Hockey), Lorraine Fernandes (Hockey), Joaquim Carvalho (Hockey), Marcelus Gomes (Hockey), Marl Patterson (Hockey), Jude Menezes (Hockey), Adrain D’Souza, Gavin Fereira and many more. Lorraine Fernandes and Joaquim Carvalho are also the Arjuna Award recipients; where as Silma D’Silva is also the Padmashri recipient.

G. N. Khalsa College enters the 21st century with the students numbering more than 6000, having strength of 200 teaching faculty and more than 150 administrative staff.

In spite of being a Minority institution, the college follows the Sikh ideology of oneness of Humanity, prides itself on its cosmopolitan staff and student population and a healthy, secular atmosphere. The college proudly upholds its secular ideals weaving a rich, vibrant, multicultural microcosm of Indian society.

The College seeks to uphold and perpetuate Sikh culture through Punjabi classes, Divinity classes and `Akhand Path’ followed by `Langar’, wherein everyone participates.

PLACEMENT CELL

Placement Cell of the college organizes Seminars and Career Fairs to inform the students about the employment avenues open to them. Various Corporate/Business Organizations visit the College for campus recruitment. The college prepares the database of the final year students and the same is provided to the employers.

The College has a good placement record. Some of the recruiters are:

IBM, Reliance Life Sciences, JP Morgan, Global Services, TCS, TATA AIG, ICICI Bank, Hexaware Technologies, TIFR, ACTREC, Patni Computers, Wipro and Dailies like Nav Shakti and Prahar.

The Career Guidance Cell is very active throughout the year and has conducted many sessions for students in varied areas like Defence, Management and Overseas Education.

Guru Nanak Khalsa College has a Placement Cell that aids in the smooth conduction of the placement drive conducted by companies visiting the university. Khalsa College Placement Cell guides the students in all career-related matters and helps them in taking the best possible decision related to their career. Khalsa College Placement Cell helps in the overall personality development of the students through its skill enhancement programme. The Cell contacts the past and potential recruiters from different sectors and they are invited by the cell to conduct campus placements. Proper training sessions are organised by the Placement Cell for the students of Khals College Mumbai to develop job-specific skills, interpersonal skills, technical skills, soft skills, etc which is highly demanded in every potential employee by the recruiters and thus these skills help in meeting the corporate standard. The cell also organises various training programmes for the students of Kuvempu University such as mock interviews and tests to help them prepare for the aptitude, reasoning tests, group discussion and interviews and also train the students to improve their communication skills as students with good communication skills have an edge over the others. There are various stages of Guru Nanak Khalsa College placement process. Companies are invited by the institute via mail. Then, the companies visit the campus and deliver a pre-placement talk to the students to make them aware of the companies policies. Further, the group discussions and tests are conducted by the companies. Shortlisted aspirants have to appear for the final round of the placement process i.e technical and HR interview.  The placement process of Guru Nanak Khalsa College is mentioned below in details:

·         Invitation to the companies: The training and placement cell of Guru Nanak Khalsa College invites the companies along with annexure and other documents such as a brochure. by via e-mail and interested companies in return gets back to the college for further process.

·         Acceptance of Invitation by the Recruiters: Recruiters interested for Guru Nanak Khalsa College placement process will fill in all the necessary information in the annexure and reverts via mail and confirms their presence for conducting the placement drive.

·         Fixing a Schedule and Slot Allocation: The Placement Cell then fixes dates with various recruiters mutually according to their availability for conducting the Khalsa College placement drive and the slots are allocated to different recruiters.

·         Registration of the candidates for participation in Khalsa College Mumbai recruitment drive: Candidates interested in participating in the recruitment drive have to register with the Khalsa College Mumbai placement cell.

·         Conduction of Tests: After the pre-placement talk tests are taken such as aptitude test, technical test, etc and students qualifying the test makes a move to the next stage of the recruitment drive. The recruiters conduct the following tests:

·         Aptitude Test: Aptitude test is conducted by the recruiters to judge the aptitude of the students and their ability of problem-solving.

·         Technical Test: Further candidates have to qualify the technical test which is taken in order to judge the technical skills possessed by a student.

·         Group Discussion:  Students clearing the screening test will further have to participate in Group Discussion where a topic is given by the recruits in a group for the Group Discussion to judge the communication and speaking skills of students.

·         Interview: Further, the candidates clearing the Group Discussion have to qualify the interview taken by the companies so that the recruiters can judge the overall personality of the candidates and ensure that candidate is suitable for the job. 

·         Final Placement:  The students who qualify all the stages of the recruitment process are offered jobs by the recruiting company.

·         Offer Letter distributions: The selected candidates who qualify all the stages of Guru Nanak Khalsa College placement process are provided with offer letters.

Guru Nanak Khalsa College offers scholarships to students based on their merit and financial needs. Some of the scholarships offered by the college are Faculty sponsored scholarships such as the Ashwinder Kaur Memorial Scholarship - highest marks XII Science, Mr. Jawadekar Scholarship – Highest Marks in ChemistryinXIIScience and Prof. Waryam Singh Memorial Prize - highest in Mathematics in XII Science.
