Government Mohan Kumaramangalam Medical College (GMKMC)

Government Mohan Kumaramangalam Medical College, the prestigious institution of the Steel City, was established on 23rd April 1986 by upgrading the existing District Government Hospital (1917) in an area of 150 acres of land.  GMKMC was established with an aim to provide education to poor and socially depressed classes and to serve the sick and needy people in Salem and the adjacent districts.  The foundation stone was laid by the late Shri. Rajiv Gandhi, the then Prime Minister of India on 25th October 1988.  It is named after former Iron and Steel Minister of India, Mohan Kumaramangalam.  The college opened in 1990 and its first graduating class had only 65 MBBS students.

Government Mohan Kumaramangalam Medical College is spread in a 150 acre land on Fort Main Rd, Shevapet, Salem, Tamil Nadu.  The Aerial view of GMKMC with surrounding mountains is a sight to behold.  It is easily approachable by all means of transport from anywhere in India.

GMKMC is an Affiliated College of Tamil Nadu Dr MGR Medical University, Chennai.  It is recognised by the National Medical Council of India (NMC).

The GMKMC offers graduate and post-graduate courses in the field of medical science covering Courses such as MBBS, MD (10 programs), MS (5 programs), DM (4 programs), MCh (5 programs).  The college enrolls 100 MBBS and 102 postgraduate medical students.   The accepted eligibility for admission is the NEET and NEET PG scores.

The Mohan Kumaramangalam Govt, Medical College is adequately equipped and provided with well-maintained infrastructure to admire. GMC is affiliated to GMKMCH, a tertiary care super-speciality hospital with around 2000 beds, 9 km from the college campus. The hospital spans over 13 acres opposite the Salem District Collector Office.  Government Mohan Kumaramangalam Nursing College is situated on the campus in a separate building.

We are very happy to inform that the Government Mohan Kumaramangalam Medical College, Salem Central Library was started during the year 1991. This library was situated in the premises of the College covering the total area of 604.80 Sqm.

The Central Library was well designed as per norms and constructed for the benefits of Professors and Head of the Departments and Medical Officers and Medical Students. The Central Library was planned and the Ground floor was constructed in the area of 388.80 Sqm with all facilities. This building is having First floor which covered the area of 216 sqm.,
