History of the college
Sourashtra College is a Linguistic Minority Co-educational Institution affiliated to Madurai Kamaraj University. It was established in 1967 with donations from philanthropists of Sourashtra community. The College is located in Vilachery Main Road, Madurai. It is situated in 28.17 acres of land at the foothills of Pasumalai Hills near Tiruparankundram. The campus provides an excellent atmosphere conducive to the pursuit of higher learning.

The objective of the college is to impart higher education to the economically poor students, particularly the students belonging to the Sourashtra Community. During the year 2006 the College was accredited with B++ Grade by the NAAC. Autonomous status was awarded by the University Grants Commission from the academic year 2011-12. Further, the College was reaccredited with B Grade in January 2013.

It offers both Aided and Self-Finance Programmes, including two AICTE approved programmes viz. M.B.A. and M.C.A. It has 16 buses to facilitate girl students of our college. It provides uninterrupted power supply for the welfare of the students community. In addition, the college management provides hygienic purified drinking water for all students and staff.

The College has an Alumni Association which provides Free Noon Meals to poor students as one of its activities. The Alumni Association donates water tanks, Steel Almirahs regularly. Activities like career and vocational guidance, spoken English classes, aptitude test classes are also carried out by this Association at free of cost to the needy students. In 2012, SCAAN Building was established with the donations from Alumni Association in the college premises.

Since there was no higher education institutions for women in and around Pasumalai area,the Sourashtra College Council started a College for Women in 1998 for the benefit of girl students.

Admission Policy & Process

The students are the real beneficiaries of an educational institution. Accordingly, their
selection matters much.

Regular Courses

Admissions are made according to the Reservation policy of the Tamil Nadu Government:
Since the College is a Linguistic Minority Institution, 50% of the seats are reserved for
Sourashtra Linguistic Community Students and the remaining 50% of the seats are filled up as per the
Government of Tamil Nadu Education Admission Norms.

The Admission Committee comprises three senior faculty members of whom one is from MBC
Community. This Committee, formed every year, selects the candidates for admission to UG, PG &
Research Degree Courses.

Along with the regular selection list, a waiting list for an equal number of seats under each
quota (OC/BC/MBC/DNT/SC/ST) is prepared and put up on the Notice Board. The candidates placed
on the waiting list are asked to report 7 days after the date set for admission of candidates selected
in the regular list to take their chances. The regular selection or waiting list of the candidates for each
course under each category is in the descending order from the respective Rank List.

SCHOLARSHIPS

Scholarships of various categories are awarded by State and Central Governments on the basis of the income of the parents as well as the merit of applicants. Details can be had from the office. Notice: Any scholarships or fee remission may be cancelled by the College Council at any time for unsatisfactory conduct for the reason that the student does not maintain that standard of work which is expected.

A list of scholarship and Educational concessions to students are given for the benefit of the students. Details can be had from the College Office.
A register showing the awards in each year and an acquittance roll as prescribed for Government Scholarships shall be maintained by the Principal and shall be made available for scrutiny by. the Director of Collegiate Education or by the officers deputed by him, whenever required.

Google Class Room Training Class

A learning management system (LMS) is a software application for the
administration, documentation, tracking, reporting and delivery of educational courses or
training programs. In our College, we have a LMS orientation to enhance the learning of the
students by adopting Google Class Room, Google Blog and using open source MOODLE.

Capability Enhancement and Development Schemes
1. Guidance for Competitive Examinations
The Department of English has a separate course on ‘English for Competitive Examinations’ for
the students to equip them to face competitive examinations.
2. Career Counselling
The Institution has Career Counselling Cell to guide the students for their higher studies.
3. Soft Skill Development
All the students in the institution learn a separate course on Soft Skill Development to develop
the communicative skills of the students. The Department of English provides a separate chapter
for Soft Skills in Part II English for the students.
4. Remedial Coaching
All the Departments conduct remedial coaching for the weak students and slow learners.
5. Language Lab
The Department of English has a Language Lab with A-V Lab facility. Teacher-students
Interactive method of Teaching- Learning process is followed for the benefit of students in the
lab.
6. Bridge Courses
After the centralized orientation of the I Year students, each department conducts bridge
courses for their respective students.
7. Yoga and Meditation.
The college conducts training programme on the Yoga and Meditation for the students to
develop a sound health and sound mind. Prof. K.V. Kannan, Assistant Professor of English is a
Registered Yoga Trainer.
8. Personal Counselling
Each department has a list of mentors and their mentees (wards). The students are given
personal counselling by their respective mentors.

ABOUT THE COLLEGE
The College started from June 1967 with Pre-University Courses and B.A English, B.B.A., and B. Com courses were introduced and the college began to function from July 1972 onwards. The college is managed by the Sourashtra College Council, Madurai. During 80s M. Com, M.A English, M. Sc Mathematics were introduced. As a milestone in the history of the college, the department of Commerce was made a Research centre by introducing Ph. D. The College was Awarded Autonomous status by the UGC from the academic year 2011 – 2012 and it was conferred by the Madruai Kamaraj University.
ABOUT THE LIBRARY
HISTORY OF THE LIBRARY:
Our college library building was opened on 29.09.1980 by his Excellency Sri. Prabhudas Patwari the then governor of Tamilnadu, under the presidentship of late sri. A.G. Subburaman M.P. Our college library is functioning in a Computerized basis. It fulfils the needs of the students in various fields of study. All students and staff of Sourashtra College are members of this library. A total number of Books 61,500 collection and 9 News papers in various disciplines are available in the library. Open access system is followed and Barcoding System functioning by books Issue , Return and Renewal Work for research scholars, post graduate, and under graduate students and Staff. The students maintain strict discipline in the library.
