Overview

The South Travancore Hindu College Association, with temple trusts and individuals as shareholders, was registered as a company on 9th January 1952 with a view to promoting the cause of higher education in South Travancore, now known as Kanyakumari District.

The College was granted affiliation on 14th March 1952 by the University of Travancore. On 7th April 1952, Sri. A.Ramaswamy Mudaliar, the Vice-Chancellor, laid the foundation stone, and on 11th July 1952, Sri. P.G.N.Unnithan, President, Travancore Devaswom Board, inaugurated the College at a special function, presided over by Kavimoni Sri. S. Desigavinayagam Pillai.

Started on a modest scale as an Intermediate College in 1952, the South Travancore Hindu College rapidly grew into a Degree College in 1955, and a Postgraduate College in 1956. With the reorganization of Indian States, the College first came to be affiliated to the University of Madras in 1957, then to Madurai Kamaraj University in 1966, and finally to Manonmaniam Sundaranar University in 1990.

Of the large number of individuals and institutions that have helped the College grow into its present status of being a Premier Institution, reaccredited with A by the National Assessment and Accreditation Committee of the UGC, special mention must be made of the following:

APPLICATION FOR ADMISSION

Application for admission to U.G. Courses and P.G Courses can be had from the college website only.

IMPORTANT INSTRUCTIONS

1. For admission to U.G. Courses, preference will be given to those who are aged above 17 years and below 21 years and who have creditably passed all the examinations in the first attempt.
2. Admission to B.Sc degree courses is restricted to those who have studied the relevant subjects at the HSC level.
3. For admission to B.Com. preference will be given to those who have studied Mathematics, Accountancy, Commerce and Economics at the HSC level (Academic Stream).
4. For Undergraduate courses students should opt anyone of the extension activities viz NCC, NSS, Red Crss, Youth Welfare.
5. The eligibility criteria for admission to P.G. Science courses is 40% and above marks in part III subjects for Scheduled Castes and Tribes and 45% and above for other communities..
6. College Timing : 8.30 a.m. to 1.30 p.m.
7. Dress Code: Uniforms for all students except M.Phil and Ph.D. Scholars.
8. Admission of candidates other than those who have passed TN Higher Secondary Examination is purely provisional, subject to the approval of the University.
9. Students who are found to have obtained admission by false representation shall be summarily dismissed with forfeiture of whatever fees they have paid.
CONDITIONS FOR ADMISSION

1. Admission will be made through Counseling.
2. The upper age limit for admission to U.G. courses will be 21 as on 1-7-2020. Relaxation to the SC / ST / BC / MBC / DNC / Women and Transgender candidates – 3 years; Physically handicapped candidates 5 years.
3. Xerox copies of the following certificates to be enclosed along with the filled in Application Form
i. Qualifying Examination Mark Sheet (Three attested copies).ii. Community Certificate (Two attested copies).iii. Certificate of Proof when admission is sought under some special quota / concessions-like Physically Handicapped / Sports / Ex- Serviceman / NCC etc.iv. Income Certificate.
3. For admission to B.Com. preference will be given to those who have studied Mathematics, Accountancy, Commerce and Economics at the HSC level (Academic Stream).
4. Application for admission to U.G. / P.G. courses should be registered in the college office within 10 days from the date of publication of the latest result of the Higher Secondary / M.S. University degree examinations. The registration slip should be produced for all enquiries regarding application.
5. Interview Card bearing the requisite postage stamp with the full address of the applicant must be submitted with the application..
6. They will have to appear with their parent/ guardian before the Principal on the date and time of counseling mentioned in the latter of Counseling. They must produce at the time of interview all documents specified in the interview card in original.
7. If the selection is confirmed, the prescribed fees must be paid immediately after the interview, failing which the candidate will lost the seat. Students belonging to Scheduled Castes / Tribes, M.B.C. and Denotified Community need not remit tuition fee and special fee at the time of admission, if they produce the relevant certificate. Their fees will be deducted from the scholarship.
8. Girl Students (P.G.) whose parental annual income does not exceed Rs.50,000/- need not remit tuition fee, if they produce the Income Certificate.
9. If there is any grievance in the matter of admission, it may be brought to the notice of the Joint Director of Collegiate Education, Thirunelveli.
N.B. Incomplete Application Forms will be summarily rejected.
RULE OF RESERVATION

The admission shall be made purely on the basis of Merit in subject to the rule of reservation of the Government of TamilNadu.
1. 31% for Open Competition (OC).2. 20% for Most Backward Class (MBC) and Denotified Communities (DNC).3. 30% for Backward Classes (BC) within this 3.5% for Muslims.4. In the 18% for Scheduled Castes (SC), 3% of seats are offered to Aranthathiyars (within the seats reserved for S.C).5. 1% for Scheduled tribes (ST).

Placements

It is one of the oldest institutions for Arts and Sciences in India. Hindu College has released its Placement Report for batch 2023 and recorded the Highest Package at INR 36.50 LPA and Average Package at INR 10.40 LPA.

Application for admission to the hostel shall be made in the prescribed form to the Principal, the warden of the hostel. Every student on admission to the hostel shall Pay Rs. 100/- as admission fee, Rs. 100/- as warden fund, Rs. 200/- as Hostel Day Contribution, Rs. 4000/- as Caution Deposit, Rs. 1500/- as water, light and establishment charges and Rs. 2000/- as Room Rent per semester.
If the required number of students are admitted in the Hostel, the mess will be run on dividing system. The monthly mess charges will be about Rs. 3000/- to 3500/-. Both the vegetarian and non-vegetarian meals are provided.
Every student admitted to the hostel must scrupulously abide by the rules of the hostel.
Separate hostel is available for Boys and Girls.
Students who do not live with their parents or guardians during term-time shall reside in the College Hostel or in approved hostels with the consent of the Principal.
The Principal shall be the Warden of the Hostel. He will be assisted by a Deputy Warden.
A student seeking admission to the hostel shall apply in the prescribed form along with his/her application for admission to the college.
Before seeking admission to the hostel, students are advised to satisfy themselves about the facilities available in the hostel. They cannot clamour for additional facilities after obtaining admission.
Admission will be made by the Warden on the merits of each application. Details regarding hostel charges, mess and code of discipline can be ascertained from the Deputy Warden.
Boys hostel accomodation and mess facility will be provided only when there are fifty members in the hostel


classrooms

The College has 94 classrooms of which most are ICT enabled. The rooms are well-ventilated and in accordance with the requirement of the programme for which it is intended. Sufficient furniture is available in these classrooms which serve as the place for lectures and tutorials. Presentations and lectures supported by presentations can be done in these classrooms.

Library

The library of the college occupies a two-storied building adjacent to the College ground. It is a user focused centre of learning resources that meets all the academic and research needs. The library is automated using Integrated Library Management System ‘ROVAN’.

The College library has a seating capacity of 200 and mezzanine flooring for stacking books. The library is equipped with internet facility along with reading room and reference section. The library has a good collection of periodicals, journals, CDs, newspapers, previous years’ question papers and bound volume of old journals.

The library usually works from 9.00 am to 4:00 pm on all working days and is open to students and staff members.


Laboratories

The college has adequate laboratory facilities to serve the needs of its Undergraduate and Postgraduate programmes. Researchers have separate lab facilities and research rooms. A small-scale Eco Pond and a Botanical Garden with green-house are maintained by the Life Science Departments as a part of their academics.


Language Lab
S.T. Hindu College has a well equipped Language Laboratory which is managed and operated by the Department of English. The Laboratory has desktops for the learners and a language instructor. This Laboratory is of particular use to the students studying I year in our institution

Language laboratory is an audio-visual installation used in modern teaching methods to learn the foreign languages. It is a technological breakthrough for imparting skills in English. The lab offers an exclusive result oriented and efficient way to enrich the English language learning process.
The basic purpose of the lab is to provide students a platform to enhance English language skills, communication skills and to practice soft skills

Sports

The expansive and well-maintained college ground, spreading more than 15,000 square feet, can accommodate all types of games. Adequate sports facilities and equipment are available in the college with a separate indoor stadium with basketball court and two badminton courts. Considering the facilities available at the college, the Kanyakumari District Cricket Association has signed a MoU with our institution and has approved the college as a recognized centre for Cricket training and supports the activities. College teams have been bagging trophies in various competitions.

Auditorium

The spacious college auditorium is spread over 906 square metres with mezzanine floor of 485.3 square metres and can accommodate around 800 people at a time with a well-equipped stage. All major performances and the Annual College Day are organised in the college auditorium which has a good sound system with modern facilities. In addition to the college indoor auditorium, our college boasts a broad open-air auditorium to accommodate large-scale audience.

Canteen

The college has a spacious canteen within the campus. It provides different dining space for students and staffs. Sanitation and purity of water are given primary emphasis, and the agency in charge of the canteen provides various sorts of food and beverage for all the types of customers.

A separate canteen exclusive for women is also available near the Ladies waiting Hall.
